Arne Fe at the cost of gameplay, Kojima has already confirmed many and long curscenes. Just from the look of things this will be more of a movie than a game. And that isn’t a good idea at all.
      Game first, art second.

@66_greenrunner_77 yeah you are right in general but this game is a cinematic adventure ( mentioned in it's official page in the PlayStation web site ) so it was meant to heavily focus on the cinematic experience, kinda like another world and other games like it, at least they were honest cause there's alot of other games that claim that they are different but if you remove their story you remove everything, like last of us, god of war ps4, Seuna's sacrifice.

I'm seeing some similarities between Death Stranding and Silent Hill PT:
    1. Kojima is making it.

If we're not talking conspiracy theories then the whole "I don't know what this game is about" is a dead meme. We've had 4 trailers, multiple blog/social media post explaining exactly what the game is and about, even gameplay.
If we're talking conspiracy, this is nothing new for Kojima. Why does everyone forget how he first showed The Phantom Pain, pretending it was from an unknown indie Moby Dick Studios, or how P.T. was the same type of trick as he hid behind 7780s Studio another fake studio.
MGS4 he tried to trick people it was an FPS briefly (Guerrilla Games Killzone was apart of this deception, so not the first time KJP and GG teamed up in a sense.)
In MGS3 he tried to trick people again making people think it was solid snake to make up for MGS2 trick but in reality it was a prequel with Naked Snake.
MGS2 he tricked people to think solid snake was main character of game throughout ads but in reality we got Raiden.
How many times does Kojima have to play his tricks for the masses to catch on. His games are never exactly what they first appear to be.
Great video besides that, I'd honestly love if you did one of your deep dives to analyze the financial possibilities regarding the theory that Kojima and Konami fallout was a staged event.

    • @savetheravee
      @savetheravee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True.
When I played MGS2 i was thinking that I will never forgive him for taking away Snake from me, but at the end of MGS2 I realized that game is a masterpiece.

    • @sammiches2555
      @sammiches2555 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The meme is just the fact that it's not spoon-fed through the reveal trailer. We could tell what Cyberpunk or Doom or any other action game is, but he's not giving a lot of straight answers. So the masses don't know what this is about because they don't read into the interviews and watch all the trailers. Also, it's worth mentioning that nobody remembers his previous marketing tactics because either it was before games were for "everyone" or some other news buried what he did. Like how PT got cancelled. That's all anyone remembers about that. So while I don't think I'm buying into the meme, I'm going all in on the game both because there isn't anything else super important this year (maybe Borderlands 3 MAYBE), and because I do want to support Kojima's new studio.

  • @JaydevRaol

I am a Cinephile first and gaming is my second love.
So when I saw all the trailers for 'Death Stranding' especially the latest one I was blown away by them and found them to be just brilliant.
With attention to details and use of music that not only fits the pace of the trailer but also fits perfectly with the story of the game.
It's not wonder the game also looks this beautiful considering Hideo Kojima is a Cinephile himself. So he has great sense of shot compositions and framing of cutscenes.
I don't how how exactly the story of this game will turnout but I'm still definitely excited for it. Because it's still trying to achieving something unique and ambitious which you don't easily see nowadays in either the movie industry or the gaming industry.

@@rashonburnett6473 Yeah man exactly! 😃 I think if this game will turn out as great as it look then, I'm pretty sure that other major studios and developers will need to work their asses off from then on, to deliver at least as great a product as this, if not better.
Because otherwise no one will give a shit about their mediocre product when high standard has already been set 😅 .

  • @Suzakuux

What I garnered from the recent trailer: it's an open world action stealth third person shooter with lots of verticality and likely able to go anywhere on the map(like a lot of other open world games have claimed in the past), with some horror elements, some kind of deep weapon system with leveling and different ammo types, dimensional travel, and... possibly even going to the moon. I'd say the black strands seen in the distance could be mission markers in place of the traditional map marker.
Kojima's trailers also tend to tease and hint at certain gameplay elements via character dialogue rather than explicitly showing people, enticing curiosity to get people to figure out exactly what it all means by discovering it for themselves, and possibly being surprised by what is uncovered.

I don't know... The last game where I had no clue what exactly you'd be doing was No Man's Sky, and we all know how that turned out.
Kojima's name alone isn't enough to sell me on this. And this comes from someone whose favourite game series is MGS. But based on his last few games, I can't say I'm excited. In my opinion, Kojima hasn't made a great game since MGS4, besides PT but that wasn't really a game, just a demo. So yeah, I'm conflicted. I don't believe Kojima was seen as a martyr but rather as the influencial creator he is that required new resources. The Decima Engine was more a gift-like favor than anything. Kojima would have had no problem calling Sony for something like homemade engine or had one done. But instead he did his job in accomplishing his vision and went to another studio that showed their capabilities. It's more of a partnership rather than looking down at him as a martyr. What they did is just a confirmation of everyone's role - Guerilla Games is a capable studio, Kojima is still as powerful, if not more, now he's working on his own terms. And that shows, the last trailer was terrific. I can't wait to see what Death Stranding offers.

Here's an idea I've managed to glean from it: DS is going to be about reconnecting with people and rebuilding the society that's been destroyed by an apocalyptic event. As in literally rebuilding the destroyed world to what it was before the disaster. This is something that's not normally done in post-apoc stories like Fallout or the Walking Dead, but with the emphasis on "ropes and sticks," the trademarking of "strand game" and the themes of human connections, we're actually going to see a story that involves rebuilding the society against all odds. Essentially, to hell with the bandits, to hell with the monsters, and to hell with the misanthropes and pessimists who say it's not possible- this is going to try and test the strength of connections to others, as well as try to shake the ideas of humanity being on a downward spiral.

I think Death Stranding is a remix of the Postman (yeah the Kevin Costner movie). The world got screwed up so you have some people struggling to somehow rebuild the country as what it was whereas you have other people embracing the world as it is and trying to make sure things move forward.

Mystique adds to the building hype perfectly - especially when combined with trailers that are on par with blockbuster cinematic sci-fi movies. The downside, for me anyway, is that it isn't a PC game; however, that doesn't detract from the pure artistry I've seen from Death Stranding so far.

I like it because it deliberately goes against the good old reality we are used to, it seems to involve parallel dimensions, invisible monsters, ghost babies and stuff. I find it particularly interesting that all stranded animals in the teasers and trailers are attached to strings; Kojima said that the core mechanic of the game revolves around connections, this might be very interesting. I'm expecting a different game with a bit of combat and stealth, some walking yes, but also some clever micro-management and exploration; But above all, an intriguing story fantastically told by exciting cinematics; From past Kojima works I'm absolutely sure he's going to deliver a master piece.

I managed to snag a copy of the PT remake before it got taken down... PT as a whole is probably one of the most unnerving horror experiences I've had in a videogame. It truely is a shame it never got a chance to come into fruition. It goes to show an important lesson in horror: less is more. It's not the sight of the woman in the demo, nor is it the inherit setting itself that makes PT so horrifying. It's that creeping wail of a chandelier swaying in an otherwise dormant home. The static-y cry of a woman, heard as if through a phone, lerking behind you, even though there's nothing there. A door abruptly shutting just before you nervously peak inside... It's an overall atmosphere of entrapment and helplessness spiraling towards an inevitable climax that leaves the player sweating and panicking, as they feel like an intruder in an otherwise cursed place... all the while the setting repeats itself while slowly morphing into something more and more sinister... Subtlety. Subtley is scary.

I don't know.... I pretty much feel like we know all we need to. Like what can't be summed up into a soundbite is obvious enough, it doesn't need explanation.
There's been an apocalypse, it's an extraterrestrial force, America is fucking gone and what's left of it's people are still facing these ghosts of the past that the game's antagonists have aligned themselves with as the protagonist begrudgingly accepts a president's / leader's quest to unite more citystates back together.
And maybe that's still vague but... We got enough to figure out here.

Second was just some seconds after, where the 8 melted into a S and in front of that *SILENT HILL*. I remember how all made me feel and how the trailer was made; And now we see same styles, but on an even greater scale.

I believe the difference between the marketing for "Death Stranding", and other games is... They seem to be teasing what the game isn't versus what it is. Games like Days Gone, and Horizon Zero Dawn are high concept, elevator pitch games. Death Stranding, however, may not be that, so the best way to market it might be to showcase what it isn't? From what I gather, it has stealth elements and combat, but like other HK games... Avoiding conflict might be the main strategy which doesn't lend itself to a marketing bullet point compared to other games? Regardless, I like the world building and overall aesthetic Death Stranding has presented, and that alone has me intrigued...

I think you forgot to mention some important things about kojimas story with Konami. Konami lost interest in making traditional video games since they started making money from other things. Kojima's long development time on MGSV and Fox Engine cost Konami a lot of money. No one knows what exactly happened inside Konami after that. But Konami removed his name from the game, prevented him from making interviews, among other things. A while after MGSV release, Kojima finally left and was able to appear in media though he didn't talk about what happened.
Another note: Kojima and Mark Cerny from Sony toured Sony owned studios to show him the technology they're making. When Kojima visited Guerilla Games, he liked their engine and they gave it to him in the box you showed.

Being an old jaded cynic: I do remember that Death Stranding was announced as PS4 and PC title even as Sony paraded Kojima as a prized cow (I do believe he fucked up stair descent on purpose). Few months later, those lovable scamps at Guerrilla Games (a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment) present him with free, no strings attached (developed and optimised for PS4) engine. What was once Console Exclusive turns into Only On PlayStation. What a sweet story. After all: perception is more powerful than reality.

As a massive Kojima fan, I even have the original Kojima Productions tattooed on me, I'm still very skeptical on this title... Majorly because it still IS relying completely on his name as of right now. To me one of the biggest concerns is that for nearly three years we've seen the smallest amount of info on the game and I've worried the thought of, "he IS aware that he's making a game right? Not just, 'hey everyone! Check out all my movie celebrity friends!'"
Obviously I'm buying it day one and am excited, but I really hope that Kojima's stunt this time (with his infamous misdirection he's known for) is that he's keeping everything super close to the company because let's face it MGSV basically showed its ENTIRE plot in all the trailers, we just didn't know it at the time.

I don’t get why most people are saying they don’t know what Death Stranding is....Kojima has clearly stated before it would be an action/adventure game and it would be an open world genre game. If people have played Kojima games before they would know what to expect - high level of storytelling, unique and different, innovative gameplay. And last but not least is to always expect the unexpected. I don’t think he has ever made a game in which there isn’t a twist/surprise. And that’s just one of the fun things about it. Unfortunately we live in an era now where marvel film trailers will literally tell you the whole the story - spoiling the film which is meant to capture your intrigue and interest, but as a result does the complete opposite.
Anyways, I’m glad you and others are excited for the game but seriously don’t be part of the crowd who are acting like they don’t what to expect. To be honest it could be the majority haven’t even played a metal gear game and have no historical context of what Kojima and his team are capable of doing.

The simplest reason for the Kojima and Konami split is financial risk mitigation. Konami is a conglomerate with many different business facets something us western gamers just don't seem to know about. When you drill down into their financial reports big ticket video games are actually one of their smallest profit sectors.* The games Konami published were profitable yes, however they represent significant risk as developing and marketing a big budget game can leave hundreds of millions of dollars up in the air for the span of a few years. Kojimas games in particular while definitely profitable were the riskiest of all because they took the most time and consumed the most money. For Kanomi keeping Kojima around while positive represented an ever growing risk, part of the cost of MGSV development was creating the Fox engine, engine development is itself an expensive and time consuming endevour that pays off long term, and with the game supporting 5 platforms at launch the cost of this game had to be absolutely eye popping for any bean counter being paid to go over the books and manage financial risk.
Kojima on the other hand is one to push the envelop and drive games towards a vision, this is costly, risky, and time consuming, he realizes this but its something he will accept to push the medium he loves. so any attempt to tone it down or penny pinch is a non option. Things got messy, because Kojima and his team were so deeply ingrained into Konami, that cutting them out took dirty and underhanded methods, getting rid of Kojima would be hard, but making things so uncomfortable that they are forced to leave is much easier.
*dont be confused by the labels in their financial reports, you may think you are looking at their video game publishing segment when you are infact looking at their gambling or mobile app segments.

  • @Mindseas

What a lovely video, I especially enjoyed the first half.
I also loved the keen observation that Death Stranding is marketed very differently than most games. We don't need to know what exactly it is, because even the inexact is fascinating and different. Gotta give mad respect to Kojima Productions and Sony (I'm not sure how involved they are, but my guess is quite a bit) for that feat alone.
Here's what I think what is causing the confusion about the game: Maybe thinking Death Stranding is a game which is similar to something already made, something we're already familiar with is a mistake. Maybe it's not a genre game in the way we're used to seeing, but instead it's an amalgam, a mix of multiple styles of games. Yes, sure there are games like that already, but as far as I know nothing rivals Death Stranding, and I'm super excited about that, because I've been waiting for that fresh breeze for a while.
So if you stop thinking about genres per say, and instead look and listen to what the trailers are, and what Hideo Kojima himself says in interviews, it isn't that confusing any longer.
This is all conjecture, based on part my own limited experience and seeing how complex even simpler large scale games are to produce, but I think Death Stranding is a game which has likely had a much longer development time than most other games of this scale. Or they're building it as they go, which would also make for an usual production process at least. To me this world and it's logic seems far too complex to have been developed in the time since MGS V and the Konami drama. But what do I know.
Keep up the great video work!
