The older this game gets the more you have to acknowledge how good it is. One of the all time greats. Like top 5 all time greatest racing games for me. It was so perfect and polished. Menus, graphics, track design, cars, tight handling, ambience. Heck even the little story elements in the championship were entertaining. Then there's the audio. Oh boy. Probably the best original soundtrack of any racing game ever. 11/10.
I downloaded the entire soundtrack of this game, saved it on my PS3 and used it as my BG music for GT5 lol. I have this game installed on my PS3, Vita, PS4 and PS5. Unfortunately, I had to replace the motherboard and HDD of my PS3 so all my files there had been wiped out. The Vita has my 100% save file with the PacMan car and the bonus PacMan soundtrack unlocked. I find the latest build on the PS5 has the worst input lag, and the Vita having the most responsive control that closely resembles the response time in the PS1.
@@leadlefthandfor me i always used soundtrack for LoveLive Nijigasaki, u's, Liella, Ridge Racer, and Sword Art Online like Sokyuu no Fanfare and ADAMAS straight into the background music for both menu and races in GT5 & 6! I spent hundreds of hours listening those while navigating GT6 main menus whilst "PHOENIX" from Lanzhu Zhong starts playing!😊
This is my favourite racing game since childhood because you get new car design everytime you win in different track🙂. Also the soundtrack is very nice..
The way you got new cars is solely dependent on what position you finish in each stage. Finishing last of the target positions in each stage basically only earn players an upgrade to the old car.😅
For the effort of running in a high resolution mode, they could have gone the extra mile in ps5 and patch the emulator to use floating point precisison to avoid wobbly polygons and textures as well
I don't mind the ps1 perspective texture wobbling, it's the defining characteristic of that console. I'd rather that than the vaseline smear of n64 and Saturn's issues (no transparencies, undercooked 3d ability)

It's funny how Namco omitted the whole storyboard presentation in Ace Combat 3 for the US, and yet RR4 revolved around them. They're both great, and the RR4 OST is sublime!
This was my favorite racing game back in the day. It had the best story modes for an arcade style drift racer. Doesn't hold up as well now, but it was great.
I'm so glad someone did this. I thought I was imagining things when the PS5 version looked sharper (yes HD, but textures/lighting is also different). Great comparison!
Crazy to think even at that era, the graphics like on their base were amazing, but limitations such as resolution or anti-aliasing kept us from seeing them in their full form, now that is is possible, you realize that games haven't improved that much. From help of things such as shaders or AA they improved, but the polygons stuff always has been good.
ps5 version while running at a higher resolution is also using ai upscaling as evidence by the edges on the walls during the race. seems to be inaccurately upscaled to the point where it doesnt seem smooth all the way but that is expected by pssr which is doing a great job. PSSR is great for current gen games, but not for retro games imo.
The playstation 1 was a powerful console in its time and produced some stunning games. Legendary without a doubt and a great console in anyone's collection.
I'm watching this and doing "live" commentary. The cars are different! 14:21 The rear wing on the Original is wider then the PS5 version. The rear lights are different sizes. Also the sponsor logo rides on the rear fenders on the Original version. The Logos sit higher on the Ps5 version.
Maybe the car in the original version looked similar or identical to a real-life car, so they (Namco) probably had to make these changes... (it’s the only explanation for this change; something similar happened with the classic OutRun, where the car in the original version was a Ferrari, but in later versions it was changed to a different car model to avoid resemblance to a Ferrari, as they didn’t have the rights to use it in the game)
@@vcdecide At this moment just hit 1 year. Anyways according to the RR wiki the first car is based on the Toyota MR2 and Nissan Silvia. The 2nd car the Regala is based on elements of Alpine B610 and the rear end of a Porsche 911.
@@vcdecide Actually, in R4 you get different cars depending on your position in a heat. You got 2nd place on the second race of the first heat on PS5, thus got the Regalo, instead of the Fatalita as on PS1, in which you did get 1st place in the first heat.
Why hasn’t Sony released more PS1 games on the PS5 yet? Nintendo has been adding more retro games to the Switch Online lineup albeit sporadically. Sony should know the fanbase is starving for more PS1, 2 and P games to be playable on their PS5 machines. And maybe PS3 as well. I would die for Little Ralph, Asuka 120% Special and Zanac x Zanac to be playable on my PS5 with trophies added along with save states and rewind.

IMO, PS1 emulation on PS4/5 is excellent, except they don't let us have raw native res. If you want native res, you have to use a not very good CRT filter, and if you play in 4K, there's no option for geometry correction.
Upscaling without texture correction is a mistake, it only makes the problems of the PS1 so much higher than what it needed to be, previous consoles could've had problems but the PS5 is strong enough to be able to emulate the game correctly I get that companies don't want to help third party emulation which is a bit of a problem when most emulators' license require that any modifications made are shared with the community but I think they really should consider throwing the towel when the community has solved a problem that took decades to fix and nobody official wants to commit to doing similar improvements
Go check out the ps1 emulator on the ps3. It's the same. Also, modding a ps3 you can forcibly put ps2 game on models that supposedly didn't support ps2 games and see that those games still run fine.
@@midorifox I disagree. While PS1 emulator on PS3 is playable, however I did notice with Smoothing on. Some PS1 games suffers some slowdowns in both gameplay & audio. Not major but it is noticeable. PS1 Emulator on PS5 I haven't noticed such issues + it runs in 1440p & has twice the options. Also do keep in mind, Sony lazily used PAL versions on some of the games which could also explain the worse performance.
I'm very disappointed, almost 26 later, and they haven't fixed the z-coordinate issue in the game (something that was fixed in emulators with PGXP (Parallel/Precision Geometry Transform Pipeline), also: why not 60 FPS? PGXP features: High Precision Vertex Data (more stable geometry) Reduced Triangle Culling (more detailed models) Perspective Correct Texture Mapping (reduced texture distortion)
You could mount a strong argument for this being the greatest racing game of all time. Right up there with GT3, Wip3out, Burnout 3 F Zero GX and Outrun 2 imo, as well as the arcade versions of Daytona USA & Sega Rally
The graphics very doable on N64 (maybe Expansion Pack help for the textures in High-Def) Sounds yes, Soundtrack no (not possible, needs re-work and compression)
Avec un Everdrive il y a de place pour la musique. Mais pour avoir torturé des demos techniques la N64 pourrait faire la même chose avec plus d'animations même. La PS1 était tellement plus simple pour les graphismes, mais avec les technologies modernes et des talentueux développeurs ont pourrait faire pareil.
I'd have to agree to an extent. There's the N64DD add-on you'd have to use the expansion pack, use the cartridge as boot/ ram and put the game on diskette Thats the only way possible I see it working out, then at that point that'll be doing too much.
I tihnk the PSX version looks better with the slighty brighter picture. Great game and fantastic soundtrack, definitely one of the best racing games of all time as mentioned in many comments and definitely the best of the franchise. thought Ridge racer PSP was also a brilliant part of it. For me though Sega Rally is probably the best racing game of all time including its fantastic soundtrack and phenomenal car physics. Yeah GT was brilliant in that era too but Sega smashed it with Daytona, Outrun 1&2 and Sega Rally.
Eles deveriam implementar as melhorias do Duckstation no emulador oficial, não adianta só aumentar a resolução e remover o dither, é pouco pra realmente melhorar o visual do PS1. Nesse ponto até o Nintendo Switch leva vantagem tendo acesso ao Duckstation e seu PGXP.
I would like to see RR: Type 4 PSX Vs. PSone Mini. The mini version has terrible framerate, much below original PAL -release of the Ridge Racer Type 4 on PlayStation. -Could you do Roadsters Trophy comparison N64 Vs. DC. I know, music sucks, but game had a lot potential. Also N64 comparison betweed Normal/Extra Rez -Name -mode on Roadsters.

i lost interest in this game for one reason. lack of sunlight. lack of light. everything hard to see even with brightness turned up. ps1 was obsessed with showing off its shading in this moment. i need a light hack.

So the PS5 version is R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 HD or Remastered. Smoothed out the jagged edges for the cars, tracks, and background scenery.

@@Webardo1508 That explains why the cars are different and also why the PS1 car (Fatalita) goes faster than the PS5 car (Regalo)
This is because of the finishing place in previous race. Second place on PS5, and upgradeded car on PS1 has better tuning. 18 km/h vs 15 km/h upgrade.

The intro to this game always got me. Excellent game in the day. A decent emulator on PC or Steam deck could do better than the PS5...and cheaper.

Why does PS5 not run 60fps at 3D mode? 😞 But the arcade machine runs 60fps at 640x480.

I have the orginal with the JOGCON. This still looks way better on the DC using Bleemcast

O mesmo jogo com usando as mesmas limitações de época, só que no PS5 com uma resolução maior, e nada mais. De qualquer forma o jogo era muito bom!

i lost interest in this game for one reason. lack of sunlight. lack of light. everything hard to see even with brightness turned up. ps1 was obsessed with showing off its shading in this moment. i need a light hack.

No PlayStation 1 o Céu está mais Real. Pois está na Cor Azul já no PlayStation 5 está Verde isso é só na Abertura. Porque Jogo está bem parecido em ambos PlayStation, só que no PlayStation 5 os Efeitos de luz sobra e o Gráfico está bem melhor.
ps1 sem dúvidas..., ps5 e só mais um pc disfarçado de console.
