Another really heartwarming detail is that the director’s first time ever being in a movie theater was when he watched his own movie at the Toronto International Film Festival
You know, I honestly think they did a good job of establishing Richard as a villain. This movie has its shortcomings (obviously) but there are some legitimately good aspects of filmmaking here that even Hollywood directors could copy. They actually show, not tell, how evil Richard is and how crazy he is by his actions. I know he’s really the only character given characterization but like hell, thats better than some actual Hollywood movies have these days I was legitimately surprised at how good this movie was
I think lore-wise, Captain Alex's character has many symbolic meanings while Richard is a relatively more simple character. The director succeeded to show Richard's character because he seems to excel in direct and visual interpretation (with great help of the actor), but he failed to do so in Captain Alex, so he had to resort to more verbal explanations. My opinion is, if we distill Alex's character to the very backbone, he symbolizes the (long gone) hope (as a leader who will drive Ugandan people out of the misery). Since the assassination attempt of him, Alex gradually fades out of the movie, finally gets forgotten by the other characters, and the question of 'who killed Captain Alex' is proved to be unsolvable and meaningless at the end of the movie. I still suspect the director's (mal)treatment of the character of Alex is somewhat intentional, to express that such a hope is very far reach from the Ugandan people.
@@kwj_nekko_6320i actually really like the movie for that reason, captain alex was a hero who kept the entire country together when he died it plunged the whole place into a cycle of violence and revenge where the mafia and military fought each other for so long you don't even remember why they are fighting, the real life footage to me kind of brings the whole movie together, captain alex died while he was send to kill the mafia so the military fought hte mafia and they fought back, countless death for practically no gain or reason, just violance for the sake of violance
It just shows how passionate they are about this. In a world where movies tend to be cash grabs(somtimes), this is a nice change of pace. It's over the top and ridiculous, and I love it.
This movie is the most genuine movie I've seen in a long, long time. It's truly inspiring and absolutely amazing what they've managed to accomplish here
Sly Cooper Damn right. Movies like this are why filmmaking is so damn great. It was made to entertain and by god did it deliver. It's that kind of purity that Hollywood so sadly needs.
"Who killed captain Alex" reminds me of a little kid running around with sparkling eyes saying that he wants to be superman when he grows up. You could easily just point and laugh, but when you spend time with the kid you see that he's so genuine, you end up hoping that he fucking becomes the biggest thing ever.
Man, honestly, the way the director says 'no' when the interviewer asks if he's ever been to a movie theatre, really hit me. Like, especially considering his circumstances, and the passion he clearly has for film, it just sounded so sorrowful.
I was also affected when he talked about being CHASED AND SHOT AT BY A HELICOPTER. Like, holy shit??? This guy's had quite the life, but nothing was able to stop him from pursuing his passion. Dude's a fucking hero.
@@redpotato2585 Oh please. People in Lagos or Nairobi or Addis Ababa or Windhoek or Cape Town or Accra aren't getting chased by helicopters on the regular. The entire continent of Africa isn't a warzone.

this is easily the most heartwarming movie I've seen you cover. even though the movie is terrible, its an endearing kind of terrible because they tried and really cared about providing happiness to people. and now they're showing the world more of Uganda than most of the world has seen. its nice, I'm glad nice people like the people who made this film can get some exposure.
bro this movie has better reviews than most modern million dollar Hollywood productions and it was made with 200$ and that i belive should 100% be and stay that way bc its just better than these hollywood things (not in therms of quality but storyline wise and THE AWESOME CHARACTER DEVELOPEMENT and the action, oh, top tier)
Honestly, the director does have a really good eye for framing action scenes. Watching these clips I found myself saying "wow, that was really freaking cool" more than I ever thought I would for your series.
I actually feel proud for the director and the actors/stuntmen in this film... This was better than Birdemic which is sad considering the difference in the budgets
Spencer White I fucking hate the director of the Amazing Bulk. The man who made this film had passion. Bulk man had the internet and a desire to make a quick buck.
*This is genuinely in my top 100 movies of all time.* The passion they had alone sealed the deal for me, but the fact that it’s so entertaining proves just how much potential Wakaliwood really has.
Dear Kevin Feige, If Ryan Coogler opts to not come back for the _Black Panther_ sequel, or wants a less direct role, then I think I know exactly who could take over. ...well, that or I know the perfect director for an adaptation of _Nextwave_.
24:14 Hands down my favorite detail of this whole movie and that's saying a lot! Like holy shit actual dramatic news footage from his tv at home, that's so authentic that it maybe doesn't need the "let's be nice to these guys they did their best with $200" thing we're all doing... this would be awesome in any movie.
The director of this film said he was trying to make a movie genre that combined Ugandan culture, western action movies, and Kung fu movies. Honestly that sounds like a pretty novel idea and I hope it takes off.
Anytime I'm having a really bad day, I come back to this video and feel so much better for it. The genuine heart and effort put into this movie just makes me feel good. It's a rare thing for Alex to praise anything and his enthusiasm is so infectious that I can't help but smile throughout the entire video
Cat No. Even if it's actually a bad movie, they treat the audience like kids, (ex. Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas) and walking bucks of money rather than people who could give them feedback either as to keep up what they're doing, or see that they need to improve.
When he mentioned the tattoo i thought it was something subtle, like a small tigerhead on her back, and not two large letters on her belly. I laughed out hard.
I think it may be actually quite realistic detail. The corrupt (as seen in the movie) police won't track the gang members based on those apparent tattoos. Meanwhile, the gang needs to intimidate the whole townfolks with a very visible brand. Whether the actual gangs in Uganda use this kind of tattoos (and whether Mr. Nabwana actually knows them) is not known to me.
While this is a silly movie, the heart, soul, and overall passion the director put into this is admirable considering his current position. I mean, even with only $200 he managed to film a better film than Birdemic. While the plot was messy (i think? Its hard to see) the shots where all well done with what he had. I mean, for example, the shot where the guy gets stabbed in the neck from a knife form the back. It looked painful, the guttural yell was realistic and it was framed well. So in my opinion? This isnt a half assed film. This is a film by someone who made the best with what he had, and in all honesty, he did an excellent damn job.
It's a lot like Ed Wood. He sucked at filmmaking, but he did it with passion. His films don't make any sense, but you can see effort. That is what is important.
"Who Killed Captain Alex" and other low budget movies like "Plan 9 From Outer Space" are better than films like transformers, just because their directors put their heart and soul into the movie, instead of being blinded by greed.
FriendlySith You could say that but there is fossilized evidence found on numerous dinosaurs. All dinosaurs are speculated to have feathers. Even T rex most likely had feathers because its close relative, Yutyrannus, has feathers. Also, birds and avian dinosaurs share similar structures on their hip bones. They both also have similar structures overall. Lastly, birds have been found to still have some remnants of the genetic code that are established in dinosaurs. For example, a chicken embryo actually has teeth, much like a dinosaur. However, as the embryo developed, the teeth disappeared into the chicken's genetic code. I guess you can argue that all the dinosaurs died in the Chixulub collision, but it is widely accepted that all *Non avian* dinosaurs were extinct. So as a recap, the "Dinosaurs = Birds" scenario is not a theory because of the evidence and actual physical proof surrounding it. Instead, you should think if it as a fact. Thank you for spending the time out of your life to hear my response. Thank you.
Dajwer He had a shitty handheld, was using something akin to windows movie maker if not worse, and he had a bunch of volunteers with absolutely no acting experience aside from stunningly high amounts of charisma. There's no fucking excuse why nobody could make a movie if they put their heart into it. (Unless you literally cant afford a shitty handheld and a cheap computer.) But if you have a smartphone there are a shit ton of really good editing apps that are cheap (or even free) So if you have the ability to comment on, and watch this video you have the ability to make a movie.
Things I just learned from Uganda: 1. Ugandans know kung fu. 2. There's a shaolin temple in Uganda 3. They love German food. 4. There are living dinosaurs in Uganda. 5.. They are good in making us laugh even if it is a serious action movie.
I finally watched the whole thing the other night, and I fucking love it. The sheer passion and effort put in by these people to realise their dreams, as well as the self-awareness and continuous self-mockery just makes it one of the most unique pieces of cinema ever made. I mean that - what other film can you name that has running commentary that mocks the film as it goes along? It's fucking brilliant, it makes me smile. 5/5. Better than Citizen Kane, m8.
That "dinosaurs" comment actually does make sense. The only dinosaurs that didn't go extinct became the birds of today. My man VJ Emmie is being *INTELLECTUAL* over here.
Tried talking to my parents on how dinosaurs are actually chickens and how we are eating them but they did not believe me they even think I have a screw lose in my head.
@@anthropos366 It is a lot easier to explain how people were made from fucking dirt or something. Also they don't need to have the basic science level for that
To be fair, $200 is probably a huge deal over there. Might be one person's income for 4-5 months. It's like the 'high budget' movies of Bollywood when translated to American dollars won't be that much. But yeah, I really liked the movie review and seems like a good movie. I think they put work into the story and worked around the resources they had.
These guys remind me of a time young directors in the USA made low budget movies, many becoming cult classics. They deserve so much more than they have, I wish I could do something.
11:40 "the tiger is in the cage" is a reference to captain Alex's line earlier in the movie where he tells his soldiers "a caged tiger is the most dangerous"
Yeah the movie has a lot of quips, you have to be sharp and understand 'African' style of speaking. The VJ floors me with single words like "Hello" because I know EXACTLY what he means!
@@steh2786 There's a fan theory in the TH-cam comments section of the original video that says that Captain Alex killed himself because he realized that he was gonna be captured and he didn't want to be captured alive.
Apparently "VJs" are a common thing in Uganda where during community viewings of foreign movies they have someone translating in real-time and adding their own commentary.
unironically the fight choreographies are really good, especially when you think about that they don't do any shaky cam or epileptic cuts. props to wakaliwood, man!
As a Ugandan, the amount of time and effort that they put into this movie makes me genuinely happy. The art of movies is about making movies for the sake of entertaining others and not just about making money, which should also be the philophosy of big time movie industries, but it seems as if some industries make films without putting any heart into it. In their case and situation, it's not about if the films are going to make lots of money, but it's about if it entertains others.
The Nerdy Alien This movie is also way funnier than all the generic comedies being pumped out by Hollywood, imo. I haven't laughed this hard from a movie in a while.
I agree, there's been a lot of decay of the art form due to the profitability of these movies on large scales. Seeing something so fun and humble is a reminder to everyone what it really means to have a good movie. Honestly if this was marketed as some sort of comedy action film I could see even a wider audience going towards it, it's absolutely hilarious and has a lot of genuine charm.
This movie really drives home a point. Passion is better than SUPER GRAPHIC BOOM MOVIE. Its charming because its not perfect, or even good by most standards. But they did it because they wanted to. Not money.
Honestly the action is better than a lot of Hollywood films. Like the scene when he jumps over the wall and unexpectedly kicks that guy. The kick was solid and the timing was perfect comically.
Am a Ugandan. The movie is largely shot in a ghetto/slum, and the actors are uneducated so they use luganda (local language). Usually, the video jockeys translate the movie dialogue from English to luganda so that the watching audience can follow. In who killed captain alex, this video jockey is just amusing himself! Hilarious stuff!! And the TH-cam comments are even more funnier!! Glad you're enjoying it.
@@Missjunebugfreak He and his crew (including the video joker) are just amazing, they make me laugh and cheer constantly and without irony. The enthusiasm is contagious.
The film in itself isn't bad, especially when you add in the conditions in which it was made but the fact that the actors genuinely look like they are having fun, the jokes and the freaking video joker just makes this movie gold in my opinion. Only watched half, gotta go finish it
It's impossible to actually make fun of this movie since you know people actually worked hard had passion and most of all had fun. Something Hollywood seems to be missing.
its kind hard to explain, but I feel like situations like these produce some of the most vibrant displays of artistic passion. this movie's charisma is absolutely infectious because of how dedicated everyone in it seems to be, it's wonderful.

This comment made me cry
You know, I honestly think they did a good job of establishing Richard as a villain. This movie has its shortcomings (obviously) but there are some legitimately good aspects of filmmaking here that even Hollywood directors could copy. They actually show, not tell, how evil Richard is and how crazy he is by his actions. I know he’s really the only character given characterization but like hell, thats better than some actual Hollywood movies have these days
I was legitimately surprised at how good this movie was
I think lore-wise, Captain Alex's character has many symbolic meanings while Richard is a relatively more simple character.
Even the Star Wars Prequels need to learn from this 😂
This movie has no shortcomings
and when you realize this movie made with 200$ had better reviews than million dollar prodoductions is so mind boggling

Ck Brothers I couldn't agree more
Honestly even the effects for that scene are pretty damn good.
And most importantly, the actors obviously had tons of fun !

*Dinosaurs*
But seriously, birds are dinosaurs.
Thank you.
FriendlySith

As a Ugandan, the amount of time and effort that they put into this movie makes me genuinely happy. The art of movies is about making movies for the sake of entertaining others and not just about making money, which should also be the philophosy of big time movie industries, but it seems as if some industries make films without putting any heart into it. In their case and situation, it's not about if the films are going to make lots of money, but it's about if it entertains others.
