I would add another line to "squint at your reference".
Once I Heard Glen Orbik saying: "Squint at your PAINTING too". That was a game changer. So, most of The time Im squinting at both and often blurred vision, with eye sight not in focus.

What kind of brushes did you use for this painting?

I used Eclipse Combers, Art Master (pearl series - flat), I think the big fat ones where DeVinci.
