  • For a team that appeared to be stuck at the start of the offseason, the Cubs have reimagined their roster by acquiring Kyle Tucker from the Astros and moving Cody Bellinger to the Yankees. Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic break down both deals: How do the Cubs pivot with the money that was allocated for Bellinger? Would Tucker consider signing a long-term contract extension? And is Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer trying to save his job?

I actually have seen Cam Smith play in person. He could be very good in a few years, but there's still development to happen and he might not reach his projections. Happy that the Cubs acquired Kyle Tucker.

Guys Soto is NOT the new precedent for fair market value on the Free Agent market. EVERYONE knows he got overpaid due to the perfect storm of the 2 New York teams desperate for him, bidding against each other, & multiple other teams very interested as well.
Soto is not worth a single cent over 550M if Ohtani is worth 700M. Not to mention the number of years Soto got also being outrageous. Tucker is looking at 10 years since he's 28 & 40M a year is generous even if 2025 is his best season yet. So 400M over 10 years with an opt out after year 5 should already be offered by the Cubs!
Maybe start at 8 years 300M to see if he's even interested before season starts. Then up it to 10 years 400M MAX at the deadline if he's looking like the guy from Houston over the first 90 or so games

My problem with Jed and this front office is that while this is a great move for Tucker, it shouldn’t take Jed trying to save his job to be able to make it. I don’t think we have Tucker right now if Jed was not in the last year of his contract. I would not want Jed at the beginning of a new five-year contract because he would go right back to being super passive.
His normal specialty is building teams that finish in second or third place with arounda 500 record that have decent players, but are generally boring.

Overall the offseason has still been in line with the nontender Kyle Schwarber philosophy of the Jed Hoyer era. Lineup looked good with Tucker and Belli. Now it’s basically the same lineup as the past two years.

@ correct. They are still short on offense.

"Fungible" swing man Sahadev? That's a very poly-syllabic word to be using.... And Patrick, the 'wet-look' hairdue is definitely you dude... :)

& Cam Smith good by 2030 is a dumb statement. If he's good it'll be by 2027

The Cubs might have the worst bench in MLB history right now.

Still better than the white Sox's lineup last year lol

We don't KNOW what the "bench" is, but thanks for being negative without information. Gee, that kind of sniping pushes the discussions forward.

@@c.r.samuelson5398 Thanks for not being smart enough to read where I said right now.
Right now they have whatever catcher isn't the starter. A rule 5 guy from AA they have to keep on active roster or give back. a OF with 45 PA who is out of options and they have to keep or lose and either Mastrobuoni's .542 OPS or Vazquez's 14 lifetime PA.
So yes we know what the bench is right now now and its comically terrible. With the next man up Matt Mervis .481 OPS over 127 PA then a guy with 9 AAA PA.
