- With spring training about to start, at least one projection system is bullish about the Cubs, and the offseason still isn’t over yet. Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic share what they’re hearing about the team’s internal win projections and how Alex Bregman would fit into those plans. Until that waiting game is over, the Cubs have to be considered a serious contender for the All-Star baseman, which keeps the pressure on the front office and ownership to make a big move that would push the club to another level.
It wouldn't be pushing it if they went 6 years and paid it over 15 years. They could get the annual amount down to $19m and bregman still gets his 6 years $156m and they be at $232m with deferred money😊
Ricketts doesn't do deferred money. Otherwise we'd of signed Ohtani & Soto. Both of which -- we needed.
@naturallawman2965 not true. He did it on JHEY
Happ stunk for the first three months. What was his average at the end of June? .190 ? A three month slump to start the season is not the definition of consistent.
If Bergman is signed , Shaw will be 2b and Nico will be gone. I would take a strong SP from the Mariners such as Miller or Woo in exchange for Nico, wicks, and Caissie.
Who's Bergman?
@@KevinKucera-p8f they would keep nico and get Shaw 400 abs
Here is what I plan with Jed:
In 25, make the post season, then sign Tucker
in 26, challenge NLCS with Dodgers,
In 27, gets the team in perfect state by resign certain players and let some walk and upgrade that position. Challenge WS title
In 28, go all in and sign every important players
And go all in beyond 28 for at least 5 years!
@@sni6941 ok rickets is trying to break even !! Tucker will get 350 -400 mill next year and the Yankees just made him a top priority . Cubs will not give that contract. If you sign Bergman the 5 percent chance you had to resign him you have no money now . Then if they trade for cease and unload there farm system guess what he is a free agent also . Put it like this after this year when the loose Tucker and the prospects they gave up they will be in a worse position espically if they trade for cease and watch him walk also
I like it great outlook we need more positivity as a fan base overall
Dream on. It would mean the Ricketts family making winning another world championship a priority, and that won't happen.
@ oh yes I believe they are! Just not on media, analyst, some fans schedule. We were way not ready from 22-24, why you try to waste money and peak years of stars by signing them? Super stars are a different story, but they did not want to come here and Soto was too much.
$260 mill payroll is planned for 2026. Not this year.
They can take control of that division with a bregman signing gold glove middle of lineup good clubhouse guy .Roll with young pitchers horton, shaw, hodge etc.
We are already a legit 90-win time.
I bet next year Cubs will willing to go over the tax if needed to like sign Tucker with 45m a year. Cause in 27, a lot will be off the book and they can get under the tax again. And then they will go for it multiple years when the prospects are into their peak years!
Of course they will go for it when situations change like Ohtani gets injured with Freeman Betts regressing (very possible with their ages)
Come on cubs spend 💰 and get Alex bregman
Alex Bregman would give the Cubs 92+ wins.
Let’s go boys
The Dodgers are great at deferring money. Why don't other teams try that?
Because team owners don't want to set that precedent. They actually want salaries to go DOWN. Thus the reason internal talks are all about a salary cap again. The Dodgers are embarrassing the entire league and the other 29 owners, including Ricketts, HATE IT!
We need a number one starter
I agree 👍 they need to spend money 💰
4:22 such a cherry-picked stat. Notable players that would not qualify for Shahadev's "consistent" list using that criteria: Aaron Judge (458 PA in '23), Yordan Alvarez (496 in' 23), Jose Altuve (410 in '23), Kyle Tucker (339 in' 24), Bryce Harper (426 in '22). That's just names in the top 9 of wRC+ over the last 3 seasons using "qualified" as the filter on the fangraphs leaderboard. Happ appears at #44. Set the minimum PA to 1500 and he rockets up to... 37th.
If Cubs don't win the central then Jed needs to be fired! No more excuses, Matt Arnold is doing way better up in Milwaukee with much less of a budget. It's put up or shut up time.
And 90 wins does what first round loss . When the dodgers will win 115 and the Mets 105 games and smoke you In the playoffs
Not necessarily. Wasn't the 2003 Cubs vs. Marlins NLCS an 88win team vs. a 91win team? And it still was a thrilling 7-game series. The best team of the Top-4 doesn't always make the final two.
