  • An insight into one of the British Army's Elite Airborne Unit, The Parachute Regiment also know as the "Paras". Formed in 1942 by Winston Churchill the regiment has been one of the most active in the British Army. The Paras now form a part of the 16 Air Assult Brigade, the army's rapid reaction force.

Had the honor of meeting some Paras the other day, they're here doing jump exercises with the 82nd. Very proud and honorable men. Much respect from an American paratrooper.

My great grandad was captured at arnhem after being shot in his foot, he was taken to a prisoner of war camp and kept there for 8 months.
I've recently come into possession of his silk escape map given prior the jump into Holland. Learnt he has a mention in dispatches and also have a letter talking of the pegasus journal entries that he documented.
I'm very keen to get in touch with the national archives to learn more about his history and to donate the escape map as I'm sure any museums would serve it greater honor than I ever could.

This Regiment IS the best in the army. Did a little time with some of the guys years back. Brutal, dangerous. Yes. But totally committed, focused, emotionally content and friendly. Many of my family were Paras. My oldest uncle was at Arhnem, as a kid of 18. Dad did the 50's & 60's. Cousins 70's - 2000's. Totally sound, reliable, selfless people. That always give a shit. Indeed. As one drill instructor once said. " We don't do things for our own honour.Or the Parachute Regiments. But in the service of others"

Spoke to some Paras today, while selling poppies on the 100th Anniversary of the end of ww1 (I’m in Army OTC reserves) they were handing out pamphlets next to us, they had good banter and looked hard as nails, they said that training is solid but the right mind set you can smash it apparently! I told them I wanted to join the Royal Marines after I finish university and the look they gave me I almost shit myself....but then I remembered my dads friend served in the SAS he will back me up so I held my nerve hahaha good experience

Kaden Broomhall You have a good 4 years ahead of you to prepare.
I would suggest all round strength training to be able to control your body weight such as for pulls but also being able to use ropes and climbing. Most military recruits do not grasp this area of training until they actually arrive in training.
So do research into Plyometrics that the military do. I would suggest gymnastics combined with cross country running.

No, although having said that, the answer is still no.
However, do you want to buy a giraffe? His name is Geoff but sometimes he likes to be called Alan -- only on special occasions though, wobetide anyone who calls him Alan on that which is not a special occasion... The neighbour tried it once. He hasn't spoken to me since and his dog has gone missing.
Anyway, I'm looking at Geoff now through the patio doors. He's sitting in the large hole he dug in my back lawn, smiling at me with his enigmatic toothy grin that says he knows full well where the neighbours dog is, but he's not telling.
Do you wanna buy him? If you're a little bit impecunious I'm willing to swap him for a new space shuttle. And a planet. And a guitar. And a big lumpy club for that miserable bastard of a neighbour with no sense of humour...

Macaco Logo, are you a key board warrior?
I was Para and did fight in the Falklands. All I can say is that to disrespect ANY countries fighting forces, who have fought for whatever reason, makes you lower than low. I remember every day the fear I felt and the pain of seeing my comrades lose their lives or suffer life changing injuries.I for one deeply regret the fact that I had to take another mans life over a piece of land. However if I was in the same circumstances I would do it again for my freedom. You are obviously a politocally motivated individual as your general train of thought seems to be to hate the British. . Never forget that brave men gave their lives in all these conflicts, and continue to do so, so we can all live our lives free from oppression.

We have a pub locally in Colley Gate, West Midlands called The Whitley. Iirc it is the only one in the UK bearing that name. It still goes by it but due to a recent re-vamp the iconic sign with a nighttime Whitley bomber no longer hangs outside which is a shame. In addition I have occasionally heard the Maroon berets referred to as a 'Daphne' and never knew why - now I know. The references came from Paras of vintage WW2 not from todays recruits.....

everything fine until i got to the last doctor in the medical wing. months ago we sent a appeal off and it was with a requested 3 month training program from the medical team at pirbright. the appeal was accepted thats why i was there, but this cunt of a doctor didnt believe my training program... she said there was 'too much detail' for me to remember 3 months back. i tried fighting my own corner but she wasnt having any of it. she had no medical evidence there was something wrong with me but she still deferred me for fuck all. even one of the sisters there thought it was pathetic along with 2 Sergeants. wasnt up to them though:/ so i traveled all the way there to get deferred on the same ground from my first appeal. my farther is ex WO1 coldstream guards and he said the system is fucked nowadays. in my PDA i got 8.38 in my 1.5m:) i hope you dont have to deal with the shit i did and now have to appeal again. all the lads you meet are quality, you have an immediate bond with them. when i left they were all supportive. you will have a good time trust me:) just dont go to a doctor Patel ;)

The members of the Royal Marine Commandos and the Parachute Regiment are woven from the same fabric and all though they are woven in slightly different patterns all though still very similarly, both are woven with same amount of skill and the end result becomes of the same quality, so to speak. So, it is silly to fight when comparing the two. Almost all nations in the World have two elite units that are of the same skill, one is usually amphibious and one is usually airborne, but both are of the same quality.

+Osvath97 Great Point, but it's still the same even now in The British Army, whatever regiment anybody talks about. Both Paras & the Marines still think they are better than the other. It's exactly the same between the SAS and the SBS. Always has been & always will be. Personally i know men who have been in both, including my dad who was in the Paras in the 60s.

Scree72 Carpe Diem All though I am quite ignorant of the state in the United Kingdom, my Father was an officer in the Swedish equivilant to the Royal Marine Commandos, and he has the utmost respect for the Swedish equivalent of the Parachute Regiment, and vice versa. He also has the utmost respect for foreign elite units. Maybe the Swedish national spirit is different from that of the United Kingdom, but I believe that most of that is friendly competition and that there is nothing deep seated in it. After all, the Special Air Service and the Special Boat Service often borrow each others members as they are needed.

*warning I go on a bit of a story here* as much as I admire the paras I do think I am going to join the air force. This year I was on a march break trip with my air cadet squadron and we had the pleasure of meeting a master corporal in the air force who said he had a story about some paratroopers when he was an avian tech. The pilot of this c-130 hercules is flying and he says "why are the controls so sluggish?" when the pilot turns around the paras are doing chin ups of the aileron bar one of three controls that literally keeps the plane in the air.

+purple brain I think that what you saw was some fictional wartime propaganda. The first British parachute drop in WWII was to capture an airfield in Tunisia deep in the enemy's rear. The paras were then supposed to be relieved by ground troops. That did not happen and they had to fight their way back to friendly lines through over twenty miles of rough ground. In doing so they were forced to leave behind some of their wounded which were then captured by German (not Italian) forces. Not quite what you claim but that is the truth of the matter. Other than in the aftermath of Arnhem, that is the only record of British paras surrendering in WWII (or anywhere else for that matter).

I have the honour of knowing one of the first hand picked sas men during ww2 the few stories he told me would shock any hard case he knew the famous paddy main personally, during his first jump two blokes jumped to their death canopy didn’t open , the 3rd understandably wouldn’t jump big Sargent said you fkn jump now or I’ll throw you out myself and so they just all jumped without any trouble , he was in the jungle with his unit at one point they had natives carrying their supplies they captured an air drop what turned out to be spirits , next morning they woke up to find the natives paralytic drunk and no spirits left , I asked him what happened what did you do ? He said we cut their throats and had to carry everything and we wasn’t best pleased , he died in a rest home near me in 1993 what a cracking old guy I had so much respect for him , btw some of this video is total crap but best not go in to that especially the Arnhem bit

Apparently in the 1940's, or thereabouts, a bunch of them went into Swindon town centre and smashed shit out of the place. Their punishment for that was that the regiment would never be a Royal regiment for a 100 years. Not sure if it's true but if it is, those poor bastards must have spent their whole lives in regret over a couple of hours fun.

We hope and pray the British Armed Forces honor their proud legacy and lineage and bring to justice those that harm God's vulnerable children. The British soldier is a man, a son, a husband, and a brother. We have to defend ourselves against magicians who would have use debase ourselves to their perverted depths of criminality. This isn't about Britains past, it's about her future. Fight.

Interesting how different Montgomery’s legacy is in the US and UK. Everything I’ve read pointed to fellow English officers hating him even more than their US counterparts bc of his overcautiousness ie gaining ground then retreating then attacking same ground again and again bc of logistics and the embarrassment of the whole marketgarden fiasco.
