In German, capitals are an integral part of grammar though. This sentence in German would look like:
" In German, Capitals are an integral Part of Grammar though."
It's not only what's important or at the beginning of a sentence, but shows if something is an object or a verb, objects and nouns are always capitalised and verbs are always small, for example.
I just thought it might be an interesting little thing to add, as not everyone may have noticed.
Would you really consider them integral? Because I think it's more of an aesthetical extra, rather than an integral part. (if you consider integral to mean important)

@Barry Manilowa No, it's not quite like title case. Verbs and adjectives are not capitalized except at the beginning of a sentence. The capitals basically help you find nouns.
I want to ask you the notion that using only lowercase letters in German would be quite an avant-garde...like Herbert Bayer's Bauhaus font
@@namjuok7203 Being German, using only lower-case letters (or all caps for that matter), as some people do in texting, advertising, or for aesthetic reasons, is mainly annoying because it strips away information and makes texts harder to read. It's ok for headlines or trademarks, but beyond that, it slows me down when I'm reading.
As a graphic designer I find this very interesting.

Typography was chosen for TED... I'm pleased. As a student of Visual Communication Design, we need to have a more delicate eye on our environment, for example, a font.

He makes it look as if Futura is the most used font, it’s not. Helvetica is the most used font. It’s so ubiquitous, you see it everywhere! Loved the presentation though.
My most loved typeface
I usually do not think about fonts as I used to is because NOW I only care if I can actually read it. In the past, I used to think of the various things and meanings I could pass to the reader without being too obvious about it. I now think about how readable it will be by choosing a certain font for my Kindle or Kindle app to both allow me to get the most words on the screen and still be readable to me...sigh.

meanwhile my city's public buses EDS (the route display matrix on the side or front) has all different designs, some in arial, some looks like it came from london.
and also the MRT station station navigation signs are all over the place with the icon and arrows and designs being all different...

Who chose the typefaces at NASA? Is there documentation that other typefaces were considered? It's clear that Futura was the most used, but is there information on how they made the decision for the plaque? Was there even a discussion or was it simply decreed that Futura would be used?

But I mean... many typefaces could have been used instead of Futura. I think it would be more fair to attribute all of this achievements to the invention of writing and our writing system as a whole, instead of a single font.
The problem with a font such as Futura is it has a narrow 'I' and wide circular 'O's. Some words then look very unbalanced. The kerning on the apollo plaque text is atrocious - I'd have lost my job if I'd have set type like that. Look at the amount of white space between any characters with vertical strokes such as 'IN' and the gap between 'A' and 'C' in PEACE or 'LY' in 'JULY'.
it's not that it "tapers". it's that the perfect circle in the middle is offset to be centered from edge to edge of that letter, and not centered inside the other perfect circle that it is supposed to be punching a hole through.
The result is that the circular part tapers at the two ends

After americans borrowed a german font, they needed rockets to use this font on and went ahead and borrowed Werner von Braun too.

Easy to read, that till a web designer get his/her hand on it, first redesign with thinner lines, adjust to lowest contrast possible to background, lock font size to very very small. Then pat themselves on the back for a great job, resulting in a web coder inventing reader mode🙄
Why not "Universe" then? Gill Sans, Helvetica even?

I think the Nazis rather used fracture type faces. Which fell out of use after the war. Except maybe for titles from newspaper and such. But never the whole text.
Luckily I learned in early ages to read such texts because of super old books in my school.
Still an interesting topic.

Am I the only one who is thinks what makes this talk so "worth spreading" (maybe because of limited knowledge in typography) but still completes watching the entire video (because of the way the speaker put the argument was just so appealing)?

This is a weird talk. Interesting, but I’m not entirely sure it’s saying too terribly much.
'We came in peace for all mankind' implies 'Sod the rest of the species, wherever they come from'. Not a good choice of words.

@@whoopjohn not really. It was humans who went to the moon, not any other species, so we can only represent mankind. Some other species aren't peaceful by nature lol
@@sojosadventures3001 I think my misunderstanding concerns the word 'for'. I am English, not American. 'For' as I read it conveyed the meaning 'For the benefit of', whereas I think the intention was 'On behalf of', which is far more benign. Two countries divided by a common language.

Cool story about the font. Too bad we can't talk about any of the technology used for the moon landing as no evidence of it exists. Not even drawings of the rockets. Nothing.
