    Takes me back to when I started 15 years ago. If you want launch/landing suggestions; Launching with the wing layed out like you did has the problem of the prop blowing the tail of the wing over the nose interfering with inflation which can result in the wing not coming up straight. After laying out like you did with no slack in the A's, stand behind the center of the wing, reach down and pull the rest of the material (center and tail) and tuck it under the nose through the center 1/3 of the wing. Now nothing will block the nose during inflation and the wing will come up faster and straighter. Powered landing tends to work better and in light to no wind after landing and slowing some I keep my eye on the wing, keep a bit of power on and lower the brakes until the wing starts falling backwards. As soon as the wing sags backward kill the motor and the wing will lay down softly and very neatly behind with the lines staying fairly straight and out of the prop. Think of it as using forward motion from the motor to "blow" the wing back behind you. Flying a trike you will learn to control the wing with the motor more than you do when foot launching. To help with torque I raised the right carabiner slightly by switching to longer hang strap. Hope you find something here helpful!

    Well done, dude! Being a trike flyer myself I know the hard bits. I reckon the biggest difference in starting is that you won't be able to take a step sideways to get centered. So the trickiest part is preventing oscillation and how to deal with it when it happens. For me a cross wind take off is a no go, to start with..... And I was taught to always land with the engine off, but I don't know what my co-trikeflyers will have to say about that. Good luck!

    The wheel turning thing you were talking about is called "counter-steering" which is what motorcyclists and bicyclists do when they're at speed. Essentially, when going faster than about 10 mph on a motorcycle, you push the handle for the direction you want to turn (push the right handle forward slightly and the bike will wobble to initiate the turn to the right). Hope this helps explain it!

But all kidding aside, a ten or twelve foot boat with that system would give you unlimited places to take off and land. Waves days wouldn't be a good idea though. A frame with retracting wheels on the boat would let you take off or land anywhere.

    This generally doesn't happen with trikes, as they aren't designed to lean, for the most part. Your suspension may be a bit too soft.

    Nice job Tucker. I've been a foot launch for 3 years and recently learned to trike on the same setup with Kyle and Travis in Nov 2019 and got the tandem exemption (don't know if you and Jacklyn remember meeting me while you were in Lake Wales). As for your hang point and your weight...my recommendation is to to a hang test or fly with barely any fuel to see where your recline angle is. The amount of fuel in the tank is definitely a factor (and you'll find when you have a passenger this applies as well) so when you fly for a while and use up fuel your center of gravity will change. This is not as big of a deal with foot launch but as you pointed out you definitely don't want to land nose down..ever. Fly safe! Welcome to the Trike (old man) club! LOL

    SWEEEET! Nice work! I figured you'd pick that up quick! I still can't recover from the sideways wing ... which happens 9.9 out of 10 times. I also have a hard time juggling the A's, brake and throttle in my right hand (I see your's hooked up in the left hand position) - I usually get the A line yanked off my thumb too soon, and that's the end of that. I need a TON of practice. Haven't been at it much lately. Been doing more flying with my powered parachute buddy though - he took me up last night again. Getting used to the flying sensations now. I just need to get my taxiing dialed in, then I'll PIN IT! 😁

      Trikes are definitely easier to take off in low to zero wind. But in higher wind conditions, inflating a single on a trike is tricky. It’s very hard to reverse launch a wing on a trike.
      But yes landing is always easier with a trike.

  • @MichaelSTaylor
    @MichaelSTaylor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Tucker! Relatively new to your channel so my bad if you've bought this up before, but could offer up a brief take on trike vs. foot-launch tandem? I would guess the top two disadvantages to foot-launch are:
    1) You probably need a healthy headwind in most cases or else take off is either impossible or exhausting. Maybe also a bigger wing?
    2) As a PIC, a huge random factor is added because if your passenger does something unpredictable during takeoffs or landings, things could get pretty bad in a hurry. Sensory overload to someone new to an intense experience likely increases the chance things will not go as expected. Bottom line is malfunctioning nose gear is still malfunctioning nose gear even if it's a lifelong trusted friend, if that's not too weird a way of putting it. 😃
    I think seeing a trike on this channel along with all of guest experience possibilities is fantastic. For a lot of us who would love to share the flight experience but will probably never get a separate trike setup, could you take some time to share any footlong tandem experience that maybe didn't end up on the channel? Maybe the fact that a FL tandem only showed up twice (I think) is enough of a weak endorsement of FL to read between the lines. Besides not likely needing a 2nd more powerful motor setup, can you maybe share any advantages you might expect to see with foot launch over a trike?
    I realize you haven't experienced using the trike with a passenger so there may not be that much to say right now, but I hope you could shoehorn in some foot launch comparisons in upcoming trike/tandem videos.
    And fwiw, I enjoyed the crunchy guitar sound background in this video.
    Fly on!

    • @MichaelSTaylor
      @MichaelSTaylor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tucker if you are skimming these replies, here are two important tips for you:
      1) the FAA says you can't fly tandem without instruction being part of what's going on. Might be best to refer to your upcoming tandem get-togethers as "and this week I'm starting lessons with..." and maybe include a flying tip or two. If you don't do either it's not like squadrons of angry black helicopters are going to show up, but you seem pretty respectful of rules in general so take a gentle reminder of them for whatever they're worth.
      2) I'm not going to outline exactly what the other thing is, but I think it's even more important. All I'm going to say is I think you mentioned sometime recently that you wanted to get your pilot's license up to date. Now that you've got your 2 seat tandem trike, you might want to cross off that license thing sooner rather than later. (Re-read FAR 103 or Jeff Goin's page linked above.)
      You probably know all this already or have figured it out by now but if by some chance these last two things made sense, then definitely re?read F103/Goin if you are going to read anything. And by all means skip my book chapter of a post way up above. And please accept my apologies for all of this noob Rabbit Hole rambling.
      (OK STOP READING NOW, THANK YOURSELF FOR STOPPING LATER. Re: I thought I would stop rambling now, but trust future guy me leaving this comment here, the rambling is only just beginning)
      Dude, the reality is I have less than 1 hour of lifetime flightime logged, and I won't even start training for PG/PPG until next year. Which means I basically shouldn't even start thinking about tandem until 2023 -- and then I look back and see myself crapping verbal diarrhea for paragraphs on end like tandem is actually in the neighborhood of being remotely important to me in 2020? Where the hell are the rolls eyes and shakes head emojis? ...Da fuck.
      When I go down these online rabbit holes, whatever I'm interested in just seems to consume me while everything else I was doing at the time gets stuck in Freeze Frame. Kind of like the talking dog in the movie, except after dropping everything to take a look, it's days later and I'm still staring at the squirrel. Yeah, it is pretty nuts. Time to unfreeze and give my attention back to a shitbarge of things I really don't want to do. I don't want to do these things but I want to avoid avoiding doing these things. The longer I keep up this level of inaction, the longer I remain on the ground. On what feels like deeper spiritual level I'm not ignoring the importance of the process where every now and then you really do to stop everything and allow time for a cool new dream to take root. that really does need to happen from time to time, at least for me because I think if you go too long on the same old autopilot and don't spend any time slowing down and looking around to see if your inner compass is still pointing in a direction you're happy to be traveling. then you might never end up at any destinations worth getting to.
      Of course if you spend too much tripping time on a new dream, you can lose all perspective and wind up spinning around lost in the clouds like JFK jr. And then suddenly you shake yourself awake and realize the TH-cam comments section squirrel still has your attention and it's about time to realign with another spirit animal. Or just dump all the damn metaphors alltogether and just get back to fucking work already.
      Okay one more thing. (Big surprise.I know)
      Yes, the smart thing to do is to delete this. Pretty much all of this. I could think of thousand reasons why but there's at least the one in a thousand chance there is still someone reading so I'll mercifully keep them to myself.
      Maybe though deletion would go against the vibe of the channel?... Tucker shares his mistakes, and he'd arguably look better if he didn't... I know this still doesn't excuse me from dropping a completely out of place stream of consciousness novel here, but I'll try leaving this long-winded mistake untouched if only to remind me that maybe I should go join Twitter where I could be posting hundreds of stupid things right now instead of just a couple.
      Peace.

    Tip and trick from Pascal Valée (if you don't know him go check him out) To avoid the jolt on the trailing edge of the wing on initial rise, Once your layout is properly made, pull the trike slowly 2-3 feet forward until all the lines get under tension. The trailing edge will crumple up underneath the rest of the wing and you will avoid the trailing edge flying and flapping up before settling in the right position. This also helps the wing keeping a better centralized position on initial lift. Great job on this first flight. It's nice to witness all the care and attention you give to details, like a true pilot should. Cheers

Then I strapped on the 70 lbs of kit. Whoa! With my bad arthritic knee's, there was just no way I could do this sport. I had considered pressing on and making things happen via the "trike" but........ your vid reminded me of the myriad of variables what with carabiners, lines, and on and on and on not to mention the upfront costs - that of a small 3 axis ultralight. I've been a licensed pilot for quite some and I'm sticking to it and my experimental category aircraft. I switched to trike about 3 months ago. I load mine into the bed of my pickup. I keep two short axles and two motorcycle ramps handy. The only tear down is to swap in the short axles so the wheels go into the truck bed as I roll the unit up into the bed... rear wheels first pushing on the front, no lifting! I strap the wheels down and Velcro the prop so in just 5 minutes I am loaded up and on the road.
    I am looking foreword to seeing your solution.

    Get yourself a 6x12 enclosed trailer with a ramp. It’ll be a nice dry secure place to store everything trike related and you can just roll it in and out totally put together. 6x12’s have single axles with no brakes so they’re inexpensive to buy and maintain and its a good size for moving around motorcycles and quads and lots of other stuff if you need it.

    • @TuckerGott
      @TuckerGott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the long term, the trike is only going to be used occasionally when I have tandem passengers so I don't think it's worth the expense of an enclosed or even a flat bed trailer when I can just lift it into truck. I've found that it's easy to load with everything still attached as long as I have a second person to help.
