Unrelated to this video, but I want to take the opportunity to say thank you :) I've always wanted to go to Iceland and your vlog from last year made me finally book it. And here I am now! Gorgeous country! Sitting in a bookshop right now, trying to decide which books to buy ;) so thank you again, for the inspiration and everything !

That ending did it for me. I was wrecked when Emmie said, "Thank you for being my friend and coming into my home." What a beautiful friendship. Remined me of my Bestie 💞

Goethe's 'Italian Journey' is a good pick. He was a marvel in every sense of the word. SO MUCH LOVE FOR GOETHE! Faust is still one of my favourites :') undefeated.

When I got back into reading I was only reading mountain climbing books lol. I recommend Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauar, Annapurna by Maurice Herzog, K2 by David Roberts, Into The Silence By Wade Davis, Touching The Void by Joe Simpson, The White Spider by Heinrich Harrer, Scrambles Amongst The Alps by Edward Whymper. I also loved watching docs on Sir Edmund Hilary, Sir Ernst Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott. Also, not about snow or mountains but I loved The Lost City Of Z by David Grann and The River of Doubt by Candice Millard

So much bookish power in one area! BTW, Emma, thought of you recently watching a show where people were watching old movies and mocking them. There was one with a car traveling through the abandoned Mexican countryside and the watchers started singing, "One hundred years of solitude, one hundred years of solitude! Take one down, pass it around, ninety-nine years of solitude!"

If you ever travel to Ireland , there’s a little shed/nook of a bookshop called the olde book shop at the hill of Tara and it’s filled from top to bottom of really old books , I’d say you’d love it.

lovely seeing you gals together and your beautiful friendship! I appreciate your eclectic taste Emmie, looks like you'll be doing a lot of virtual traveling. I have been drawn to niche areas of psychology and understand our local environment recently and am following that impulse. Enjoy your glaciers and mountains, as much as I know you love winter

Emma, if you would like more non-fiction mountain reading, I can highly recommend all of Jon Krakauer's books and essays. His book Into The Wild, while not specifically about mountaineering, is one of my all-time favourites. He also wrote Into Thin Air which is about the 1996 Everest disaster (he was one of the climbers present), and his essay collection Eiger Dreams is wonderful.

If you’re interested in mountains, definitely check out Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracey Kidder! I didn’t appreciate it as a high schooler (and admittedly have not reread it), but it follows Paul Farmer and his work with Partners in Health. John and Hank Green are huge advocates for World Health and have raised so much money to help pih provide access to healthcare in Sierra Leon. Very cool guy, very cool org, and very cool story!
Note: I don’t remember if it’s actually about mountains, but I do remember mountains in it and him traveling a lot

I just caught up no your TBK/The Stranger video with Carolyn and I have a book recommendation for you! I found myself sympathising with a lot of your thoughts regarding what exactly the point of life is and it made me think you might enjoy The Wall by Marlen Haushofer. It's dystopian eco-lit, and it taps into some of the same ideas about what the point of life is but from a very different perspective, looking at mankind's place in the natural world. Although in some senses it's disturbing there's also something utopian about it (as is often the case with the best dystopia) and especially given your love of nature and desire to live in a cottage in the woods you may find something in there you appreciate. I'll give you this paragraph as a sample of the tone and some of the themes:
"Things happen, and like millions of people before me, I look for a meaning in them, because my vanity will not allow me to admit that the whole meaning of an event lies in the event itself. If I casually stand on a beetle, it will not see this event, tragic for the beetle, as a mysterious concatenation of universal significance. The beetle was beneath my foot at the moment when my foot fell; a sense of well-being in the daylight, a short, shrill pain and then nothing. But we're condemned to chase after a meaning that cannot exist. I don't know whether I will ever come to terms with that knowledge. It's difficult to shake off an ancient, deep-rooted megalomania. I pity animals, and I pity people, because they're thrown into this life without being consulted. "
I will throw in a slight warning that, though the book contains some of the best writing of animals you're likely to come across, but there are also a couple of bad things that happen to animals. It's not at all gratuitous, but still I know that might bother some people.

Emma! You MUST read ‘The Lost Pianos of Siberia’ by Sophy Roberts! It came out in 2020 and inspired my own thesis on the philosophical and literary inquiry into Siberia. You’re going to LOVE her writing! She also has a website with all the photos she took of her travels. Among the most affecting non-fictions I’ve read in recent years

If you're in the mood for travel literature right now, I would recommend reading 'The Salt Path' by Raynor Winn. It's a beautiful memoir about a couple in their fifties that decides to hike the South West Coast Path after facing some really hard times in their life and becoming homeless. It is really inspiring and full of beautiful nature and a loving relationship. 😊🩵
