It’s a really really good documentary!! When I say riveting, I mean it.. I had a couple t-shirts and a trucker hat from the brand back in the day, I actually still have the t-shirts, but I had no idea about all this fiasco behind it… it’s exciting and sad all in one.. so much emotions in one show man… can’t give away too much, but if you’re into fashion, or business, or the business of fashion, or if you’re just looking for a good modern documentary, this is it!!

I miss Y2k so much, the 2000's were amazing. And this reminds me of my Von Dutch days in the 2000s. And Crazytown Butterfly was so perfect for this intro!

I’m going to a Y2K themed bday party tonight and I had a trucker hat airbrushed with the iconic “Von Dutch” logo 😂 I had a few hats back in the day, and I just remember we had them in EVERY color!

Very very very good documentary!! It is definitely worth the watch. In my humble opinion I believe Mike, Bobby, and Ed should have been sole owners of the brand. Mike and Bobby had the heart and vision of what the artist himself would want his brand to be and more. Ed carried the rights because of the permission he received from the daughter's of von dutch.

But they were absolutely awful businessmen. If Tonny didn’t enter the picture it would have been bankrupt and never exploded. Mike and Bobby are hypocrites what they did to Ed is what Tonny did to them

I totally believe Mark and Bobby were in love, it makes so much sense. Like Mark flipped when Bobby brought his girlfriend around, and pretty much isolated Bobby from every other woman in his life except I believe Mark couldn’t actually verbalize his feelings so he would become violent instead. It’s sad though the way they both ended up. Like start to finish their lives were so sad. 😣

I watched this recently on Prime-I just saw it there and was intrigued-binged the whole thing! The music and atmosphere brought me back to the 2000s, the end of middle school and all through high school and college, the nostalgia was palpable and exciting. This documentary was well done.
I didn't know about the clothing, I remember the flying eyeball, but I always knew Von Dutch for hotrods, flames, and pinstripes.
I'm so glad I didn't remember first hand all the reality tv, nonsense, and gratuitous branding. I completely agree with the "no respect".
It's sad, but nothing new that multiple people will claim creation, the interviews were all professional and fair.
It was cool seeing the man behind it all, but as for the letter, with no corroboration, I won't belive it's alleged legitimacy and won't judge the man by today.
I found it a little hypocritical that they were worried about all the counterfeits when they got their start, buying Levi's and replacing the label with theirs.

All these comments a year ago. I'm in the video with Ed Boswell in my fine art screen printing studio. I'm the one on the right at 1:18 with the white/red checked shirt. I was doing the separations for screen printing the Flying Eyeball and Von Dutch with the Triumph swirl. This was 1995 and Ed already had a Mechanic's Clothing Line and had Von Dutch patches and screen print Flying Eyeball on clothing. Ed was the only honorable guy in the whole story.

    • @johncharles3286

Kenny Howard was more honorable, it was his art. Ed Boswell just bought the rights to his work so he could make money on it.

I don't think there's any way the series could be as enterntaining as the trailer. It sounds like it was written by Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Rec. "Girls at block parties ... champagne .... private jets ...... Paris jumped out of a cake!"

Paris and the rest of that glitz is only filmed for all of 3 minutes. The most comprehensive story of Dutch is told in the book "The Art of Von Dutch". I am proud to be one of the few people who Dutch would tolerate on a daily basis, and the whole fiasco resulting from his daughters' selling the rights to his logo after he passed is sad. He was an absolute genius: being the Father of Modern Pinstriping made him an icon in the Kustom Kulture movement, but he was so much more. As an artist, he impressed Pablo Picasso so much that Picasso wanted him to be his protege. He was a jazz flautist, master knife and gun maker, and when in high school in Compton was known as " The Fastest Man in L.A." The documentary got one thing right about Dutch: he hated celebrities, posers and self-important types, and would be rolling in his grave at how his name was commercialized. He hated his own celebrity too, saying "all I care about is doing good work". His good friend Steve McQueen felt the same way about his own celebrity . Steve hired Dutch to be his bodyguard after the Manson killings(he was supposed to be at the party, but got 'sidetracked' by some sweet young hottie). When Steve introduced him to another friend, Bruce Lee, Lee tried to impress Dutch by saying he could knock him back off his feet with just an open palm a couple of inches off his chest. Dutch said "well that's OK when you're in Japan and everyone is packed together like sardines, but what do you do if someone does this?" and pulled out his gun and put it to Lee's forehead.(Lee was terrified of guns). That ended Dutch's bodyguard job with Steve :).

I got made fun of because I was living in Miami where nobody was familiar with New York hip hop clothing. But when I started freshman year the following year, where the presence of hip hop gear was already popular with the older students, everybody that laughed at me changed their tune and apologized because I was the game changer. Soon they all started rocking the urban gear. Nowadays I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing fubu, lol
