Great addition to the Fleet Friday lineup. I didn’t know they stocked so much stuff on a truck. Ladders, saws, Sorbol, salt, tire chains, and such I would expect but ladder 20 is equipped for so much more. Good thinking at the FDNY. But who would expect less?
Have not seen FDNY use a ladder pipe for many years. They were used quite a bit in the early 60s and before and the advent of the tower ladder and its pre pipe water way. But all trucks still carry them.
Question, since Tillers are a trailer I assume hooked to a 5th wheel are there spares in case of mechanical issues? and are all the Tillers interchangeable with one another? I would assume they are all built the same to work with any tractor. Big fan of Tillers and they are a MUST HAVE for NYC. Great Video
FDNY does not switch the tractors. They have 1 Spare Tiller and 1 Training Tiller at the Rock. If they don’t have a spare tiller they will use a regular spare ladder.
Good afternoon from the Great State of Texas. Being a retired firefighter myself, I still enjoy the fleet Friday video's. My question I do have, is what is the purpose of the vise grips of the circular saw? I have never seen this. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
Thanks for your job i love the concept of FLEET FRIDAY! In the future, do you think you could do something along the same lines, with a visit of differents fdny firehouse in a short video? See how the guys live. :)
I love all the Fleet Fridays! Not just going over the rigs but the tools and the operations of the company is really fascinating. Question, the station appears to be four stories. In the tiller cab, please explain what EJECT, FIRE MISSLE, and PANIC is. It looks like fake buttons, but it caught my eye. Also, what types of things are being communicated with the tillerman and chauffeur?
My dad was a LT in ladder company 6 from 2005 to 2019. Tillers are defiantly needed around that area especially little Italy. You know what straight stick are turning into tillers?
Tillers Rule! I guess you have to be a little dyslexic to be a tiller operator. A old school type ladder with all the new tools. Skyler, were there more tiller years ago, before the rear mounts ladders?
Tiller "trucks" go all the way back to the days of hand-drawn wagons...when the ladders were wooden and longer than the bed section is now. Most of the company (and later, horses) pulled the tow ropes and the front steering axle followed. The "tiller man" guided the rear wheels around tight corners with a beam connected to the rear axle sticking out from the rear of the ladder wagon, similar to the tow handle of a child's red wagon. I believe that following steering beam is where the term "tiller" originated. When horses and extension ladders arrived the tiller man moved to a removable seat and steering wheel atop the rig.

Oh ok cool, is because how the city has been redesigning some of the city streets, making them more narrow and adding the protected bike lanes, I’ve seen a few years back they did a story on how they’re adding bike lanes without consulting the FDNY making it harder for apparatuses to turn.
One question I have, in regards to their training, is do they train on another company's reserve truck,or does the academy have their own rig outside the FDNY that they train on and apply to the FDNY tiller rigs?
