Bank 1 Sensor 1 is upstream and generally the closest one to the exhaust manifold and easiest to get to. Takes 2 minutes to change on most and $35 for a single. Dealerships want $300.
$35 for O2 sensor. Catalytic converter on an Acura or a Honda should last 300,000 miles. Anytime I’ve gotten a P0420 code and have changed the bank 102 sensor, I’ve never had a problem after doing that. Changed my last one over a year ago and zero issues.

The information is CATALYTIC -- the annoying and irrelevant ads are PARASITIC....but TH-cam doesn't care, they are simply upping the irritation factor ahead of introducing an ad-free "experience" for a "minimal" monthly fee (Netflix style).....They have nothing to lose....not even customers!! If TH-cam's audience of billions obstinately refuses to pay an ad-free subscription every month, they simply remain the measurable audience "eyeballs" that justify the airtime rates TH-cam charges to advertisers......What say you, TH-cam?

Glad you passed, but FYI; In California, and I don't know what all other states as well, having the Catalyst monitor registering as INC (incomplete) will not allow you to pass smog.
@@vulkandeathgrip5568 that means you don't pass the smog test and you cannot register your car until you have whatever reason the catalytic monitor is reading incomplete is fixed. In California the only smog system monitor they allow you to read as incomple or not ready is the Evap (evaporation) monitor
@@michaelrs8010 I know it won’t pass smog because engine light. Just need to know if it’s a sensor issue as it states bank 1 sensor with OBD2 or if it’s because the aftermarket federal catalytic converter somehow even though that seems odd it would be the brand new federal converter… the bank 2 sensor directly on the cat itself is new as well but I don’t know if it’s OEM or some generic brand. The front sensor (Bank 1) under the hood has been there for 178 thousand miles never replaced and that’s what the OBD2 is popping up as P0420 code Bank 1. So I’m not sure what to do first to attempt to fix the issue… could be that it’s very old ? 178k never replaced or maybe the bank2 sensor is too generic for my car along with old bank 1 sensor causing the error code to happen. Not sure
@@vulkandeathgrip5568 well yeah that is always tough too diagnose. First thing you need to do is make sure the Upstream one is the right sensor is that a mass air flow sensor or a heated oxygen sensor. Once you have the right type of sensor for sure it really should not matter if it's a aftermarket brand or not... unless it's a brand that has a reputation for being defective. But yeah if it's showing you a certain bank that is the problem and you have an older sensor there you might as well replace that. Also it's possible you might have a leak somewhere along the system. Way too many possibilities to diagnose in the comment section
My Xterra has been giving that code for 5 years and I just ignore it since it has been running fine with no hesitation or decreased fuel mileage the whole time, when it starts causing a real problem I will clean them out with rebar and a piece of electrical tape for the light it works great every time 😄
Don't worry how people pronounce words , focus on learning . You did a great job sir , don't mind the losers , who focus on unimportant shit . Funny I got the same obd reader , I just bought it . Good luck amigo .
Listen everyone….. before anyone freaks out about the PO420 code, always check your O2 sensors, if your O2 sensors are bad it will trick the system of your car to make it think that it’s your Catalytic converter going bad. I had a PO420 code on my 2007 Chevy Malibu and i just replaced the sensors and boom CODE GONE!
I know it been past 8 years and i did liked your heart kindness for sharing this video clip.i give you a liked and scubcribe your channel. Very very thankfully brother.take care.
Yes, I had the same. Previous owner drove the car to slow. I Didn't use any products. Just pushed the engine to its limits a bunch of times on a steep long climb up hill accelerating. High Rev and high turbo charge so exhaust downstream is the highest. P0420 was gone. It's funny besides here nowhere else it's suggested
"I can see it going out on a Chevy" As I sit in my Chevy Cruze with 104k miles wondering why P0420 popped up. Damn it. Guess that's that. Thanks for the help!
This is why its beneficial to get your own mechanic. Dealers mark up prices on product and repair because they have SO MUCH freaking overhead. Im surprised that even the owners dont see this as ridiculous as we do. They will charge you over $300 just to lift up the car, unplug and unscrew a faulty O2 sensor just to put one in smh.
I finally replaced my sensors(pre and post), PCV valve, Catalytic Converter, air filter, spark plugs and cleared the code and even cleared the trims with no success. It's a 2002 Camry. Rebuilt the engine and head. Still getting P0420. Blew head gasket and valve seals so had to tear the engine completely apart.
I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze with 1.4L engine it has 180,000 mile. I have been getting a P0420 code. I would go away and come back. I fixed it just by disconnecting the Negative side on the battery 1st. Now find the computer it’s on the side where the battery is. It’s has 3 connectors on it. I disconnected all 3 connectors and cleaned each side male and female connector with CRC 05103 QD Electronic Cleaner. Let it dry 15 minutes. I plugged all 3 back in. I installed negative battery cable. I started and drove the car 50 miles. It never came back.
Talked to a few muffler mechanics today that told me that's a failing catalytic converter problem, even though I strongly suggested it's an o2 sensor problem like the TH-cam videos say.
it can be both, its just a code, i just installed a high flow cat, put brand new 02 sensors on it down and up stream and it’s throwing the code at me, and for others its actually because there cat is broken
How does this vehicle pass when cat monitor says INC incomplete? When the catalyst monitor switches to complete your light will come back on and you will be right back where you started!
obd II requires a certain amount of cycles. before the emissions will even register, it'll go thru the cycles to start first. so by the time he took it in, it had done the cycles and the light had not come back on. emissions would register good tho
So listen I bought a 2004 Honda accord ex and has the code p420 they put a universal cat on it I bought a new one for 140$ and got the whole exhaust changed did it fix the code no it came back and I changed the sensors the code came back a month later and now after all that I got the high octane gas thing and it went away and been away for 5 days but I think my ecm needs to be updated or a exhaust leak
Pull the upstream O2 out and dump some berrymans down into the converter and let it sit for 30 minutes and then put your O2 back in and take the downstream O2 out and spray it out really good with carb cleaner. You might have to do it two or three times but it will solve the issue if the converter isn't damaged internally
Just change the gas station! I was going to the same gas station for 2 years by the name Raceway, and my catalytic converter failed, code PO420. For last 3 weeks I started to use BP gas station, and my engine light is gone. Better gasoline fixed my problem.
Its not between the two muffler bearings. Its on the other side of the blinker fluid reservoir. But while you working on that caddilac converter you may as well change out them muffler bearing. You already got them out and you wouldn't want to have to do it again later.
Ha, ha, you must have used Everclear. Anyway, I think someone else on you tube said try a few simple things first. Clean the battery terminals, replace the spark plugs, pcv, and what I would do is use an injector cleaner, too. Love the Catalytic video.
Hey, I had the same code on my 04 4Runner and I filled up the tank with 93 like 3 times and I did reset the check engine after I filled up the tank the first time - the check engine came back with the same code, I kept putting high octane in the tank and reset the light one more time and it didn't come back, it's been 150 miles, not sure if that's enough driving to reset the cycle.. I am still driving with 7 gallons of vinegar in my car, in case the code comes back, so I can wash the cats lol. Will see.
its easy to fix and stop the engine management light coming on, it's because the cat is starting to break up and block the exhaust system causing an over rich mixture thats detected by the downstream landa , one of the best ways to fix the engine light problem is to simplify look down the exhaust or up into the manifold and see if it's blocked and running black over rich, if so smash out the blocked cat with a length of steel bar shoved down or up the exhaust system, will mean taking it apart, but you have to be careful not to damage any landa sensors in the process take them out as well if need be, once done disconnect the vehicle's battery to reset the engine management light that's if you don't have a reset tool, once all put back together the management light shouldn't come on and the vehicle will run properly again as an over rich mixture can cause very poor running, to get it through emissions testing next test go become friends with your local garage and bribe them to use another vehicle to stuff the tester up, everybody dose it here in Britain and if you've got the problem you haven't got much to loose by doing this or it's off to the dealership and loose shed loads of money, and the really funny thing is they run better and use less fuel once the cat is gone.
Dude, I've been driving w this code for over 3 years. Ik how to pass the emission test. Haha... but I'm tired of looking at the engine light, I put a black tape over it. Problem solved!
Typically this happens because the check engine light comes on when the catalytic converter is at 97 percentage efficiency. I use RXP at Autozone to burn out carbon and the light goes off. I get my sticker and the light comes back on a couple of months later.
@@santoshdhimal1714 it is just a fuel additive that you add on an empty tank with high octane gas. It burns carbon out of engine. It typically will turn off the check engine light. It is not a fix. The light will likely come back on eventually. It's more a hack to legally pass the emission test by turning off the light and emission testing.
I have same nissan 124k ..but mines a a 2005 altima with 2.5..you never mentioned where you bought that cat cleaner..I will try some lacquer thinner..I trust scotty..he really knows his stuff..
Cataclean didn't work for me the check engine light is still on but it was the first time in my truck sure did fix the lean gas and made my truck waste way less gas big time. It must cleaned the fuel injectors or something

I had this P0420 code on my 222k mile Jag X-type. I used Lucas, STP and CRC for emissions along with Chevron 91 octane. My code is gone. Now waiting for P1000 to cycle before I take it in for smog. Thanks man!
Well my code came on and i changed all 4 oxygen sensors and the code was gone and now it came back on so maybe if i changed my fuel filter maybe that will work
The list of probalities are too many bcos most of these electronic parts has to be Original Manufacturer Parts and they are not cheap..depending on make and model...Oxygen Sensor..some card have 4...Cat..very expensive..Injectors..not cheap....if its not a genuine part...EML will stay on....or go off but your car won't run right....my mechanic put Bosch platinum on my Lexus..car won't run right😥..he said my coils were faulty..New coils..car won't run right...New injectors...I refused...during our argument he swore he put new Bosch platinum. ..told him to replace them with NGK iridium. .Bang..lights clear ..car starts running perfectly...Mechanic said he was trying to save me money hence the Bosch plugs.. so just beware with electrical/Ignition /emission components. .
lol at 11:35 its clearly shows catalyst monitor INC which mean incomplete. it wont trigger a code unless the monitor has been completed. in ca your only allowed to miss the EVAP monitor this vehicle would of failed in CA. emission testing vary by state. by the looks of az test would pass with out all the "converter cleaning" engine light most likley came back after the catalyst monitors was completed which can take up to 80+ miles of highway driving.
My 06 DTS has a few P0420 codes tangled within itself, EGR, HVAC, Bank 1 Low efficiency! I’ve replaced almost everything on the list except for the EGR Valve Bracket that could have a tiny hole leakage in. Who knows! Any suggestions besides the usual issues. Yes I have replaced the cat… mechanic told me I had a bad cat, I put in both Purge Valve and Solenoid and the engine drove better than before! I’ve been watching live data now so I think one of my sensors going bad again due to higher fuel trim making it run rich. Will update but I’m just trying to understand the bank and sensor location in my Acura TL
Any update? My car is now doing the same thing now. The cat was supposedly new when I bought it but now it comes on and off after a month. Don’t know where to look at since the car runs just fine and makes no noise
my 08 TL type s is doing the same thing. it has 190k miles so I'm sure the converter is deteriorating..going to try the cataclean and post an update soon
first I put in the fuel injector then after driving that down added the cataclean. it seemed to work for a couple weeks I think then engine light agn with same 420 code so a replacement may be a good idea if it isn't the oxygen sensors
I got that same code but I'm going to the fuel cleaners first. I did the CRC Guarantee pass emissions, I'll do the fuel cleaners that you suggested because I already have a bottle of cataclean.. I'm just wondering if I can run all of them at the same time or do one after the other. If that doesn't work, I'll change my o2 sensors before I buy a catalytic converter. I have to take an emissions test this week so I'm hoping things go great🤞🏾
What’s the side you can put them both on on a Chevrolet avail they’re like very close to each other and like in 20 minutes time you get both of them home. You know where everybody goes to get their parts from Amazon $49 for both of them.

Used emissions cat exhaust system cleaner. Cleared codes let run at 2rpms for 40 min then drove 75 miles then light came back on. Same code came on. Battling this for almost a year. Please help
Check if the gasket between the pipe flanges has gone bad. If so, spray the bolts and nuts under there with PB blaster or Liquid Wrench or any penetrating liquid brand name to help loosen the bolts that may be a nightmare to remove due to rust. Be ready to replace nuts or bolts.
Do you know you have seven commercials placed just so many minutes apart in order to watch your whole 13 minute vid ! That is the most I've ever seen . However I did glean info a product called "CatClean" to add to your gas and clean the catalytic converter. Thanks...I will give it a try. So far I have seen fixes for this code with O2 sensor extensions, replacing the gaskets on your plastic intake , or gasket change in the exhaust.
you can reset set code by resetting ECU by either disconnecting negative battery terminal or the correct fuses. I tried to clear with my SCT Xcal tuner but couldn't so i pulled fuses.
INC is incomplete meaning it needs to pass a full drive cycle meaning that the light won't come on or remain off (if it is ok) until the drive cycle is compete. I'm guessing that the light came on after the drive cycle was complete.
Question for your 2 STP bottles. Did you use 1 each for each TANK of gas first, or both at the same time in a full tank? What was your process with those 2 bottles ? I ordered the Cataclean and its on its way ..

@@honestscentz9300 My 07 Honda accord had aftermarket Cat installed and now the OBD II sensor says my sensor “Bank 1” air/fuel ratio is what’s causing check engine light and nothing else was detected what so ever. Is it possible that all I need is a new sensor for bank 1 ? And does is it need to be OEM sensor ? I believe the OEM for my Honda accord is “Denso” and also does the sensor for “Bank 2” also have to be OEM denso brand ? They replaced the “Bank 2” sensor since they stole my entire CAT and almost the entire exhaust system and I’m wondering if the bank 2 sensor is aftermarket and somehow confusing the car and causing the Bank 1 sensor to mess up. I really need help bad with this because I can’t find any used cars at all what so ever In the $8,000 price range that have less than 120,000 miles with good gas mileage and all I can find all over Northern California is the stupid ass “09’ Toyota Yaris” in my price range that’s decent on gas and I do not like anything about that car so I really need help whoever reads this message and what I should do ? Will the aftermarket CAT pass smog if I have OEM sensors in bank 1&2 ? Or is it possible the CAT itself even with brand new OEM sensors still fail smog if I replace the sensors with Denso brand OEM ? Do I need to replace both with brand new denso OEM ? And even if I do will it pass smog even with the aftermarket CAT ? I don’t wanna have to buy a new car or a new cat..
What's ridiculous is how you have 8 ads
Ads absolutely KILL this information -- couldn't get to the half-way mark before resentment and irritation made me click out!
I saw no ads at all, but then again, I pay $8 a month...
Either that or your pay. That is how ad revenue works my man.
TH-cam Premium for the win
Brave Browser will rid TH-cam ads and more. A few months ago Crunchyroll let users watch for free but they had ads every 4 minutes unless you watching with Brave Browser.

Glad you passed, but FYI; In California, and I don't know what all other states as well, having the Catalyst monitor registering as INC (incomplete) will not allow you to pass smog.
That's true, if your car is 2000 model year or newer.
What does that mean ?
If it were to be your O2 sensors that were bad, why wouldn’t it trigger a code?
Thanks for the advice. Got the same code so Im going with step 1 o2 sensors first!
Fuck bro thank you, my uncle just told me the same thing and I was over here getting worked up. I have the same ride as you 2007 Chevy Malibu
I just input both new sensors in my car and it didn't work unfortunately

Try using the parts store, why would anyone go to a dealer for parts???????
Reset the ecu, had the same code on my 08 accord.
The Italian tuneup!

As I sit in my Chevy Cruze with 104k miles wondering why P0420 popped up. Damn it. Guess that's that. Thanks for the help!

131,000 impala ss but it might be cause we put 87 octane but it’s recommended 91
Very good video.i like the way..you try to fix the catalyst converter .good tech tip man thank you ..well done..
Them darn cadaladdic converters. Haha

If everyone complains about it being too expensive why do many go there anyways instead of doing it them selves
DIY
How about Toyotalytic converter is it expensive to fix?
I also get that code for my 2011 camaro. Comes and goes. Sometimes I dont see it for the months and I passed smog before.
PCV valve fixed it for me…. No wonder I was burning oil.
Good luck on your journey
Did you ever figure out how to fix
@@jamesbroomfield7799 sold the car.
My own private mechanic recommended cataclysm or similar. My P0420 did not come back
Talked to a few muffler mechanics today that told me that's a failing catalytic converter problem, even though I strongly suggested it's an o2 sensor problem like the TH-cam videos say.
it can be both, its just a code, i just installed a high flow cat, put brand new 02 sensors on it down and up stream and it’s throwing the code at me, and for others its actually because there cat is broken
The lacquer thinner worked for me
How do you use it? Soak the cat or pour it into the gas tank?
How does this vehicle pass when cat monitor says INC incomplete? When the catalyst monitor switches to complete your light will come back on and you will be right back where you started!
obd II requires a certain amount of cycles. before the emissions will even register, it'll go thru the cycles to start first. so by the time he took it in, it had done the cycles and the light had not come back on. emissions would register good tho
More about rpm than speed you can cruise with your rpm higher and that will heat up the catalyst very well.
yup cadillatic converter is made out of palladium
Haahaa
dialog420 damn beat me too it
LOL
..and rhodium and platinum
An Advance Auto employee told me that there was depleted Uranium in a Cadillatic converter. LOL
You can use Liqi Moly jector cleaner is good fuel injector cleaner. Just follow the directions.
Just change the gas station! I was going to the same gas station for 2 years by the name Raceway, and my catalytic converter failed, code PO420. For last 3 weeks I started to use BP gas station, and my engine light is gone. Better gasoline fixed my problem.
Did it really help
Yeah I'm in the same boat I just went to take my gas cap off I'm going to wait a little bit and then put it back on
I couldn't find CADDILAC converter on my vehicle between two muffler bearings and a turn signal blinker fluid reservoir, what Am I missing ???
Its not between the two muffler bearings. Its on the other side of the blinker fluid reservoir. But while you working on that caddilac converter you may as well change out them muffler bearing. You already got them out and you wouldn't want to have to do it again later.
A catalatic converter is new to me. But I’ll try to look for one. Wish me luck.
Thanks, I am going to try it for my 2004 Silverado truck and 2000 Grand Vitra Suzuki that’s the problem I am having, 430 code .
Did it work for the silverado?
Ha, ha, you must have used Everclear. Anyway, I think someone else on you tube said try a few simple things first. Clean the battery terminals, replace the spark plugs, pcv, and what I would do is use an injector cleaner, too. Love the Catalytic video.
jaden75 ?

Time to change them then
Brian Grogan what is RXP
@@santoshdhimal1714 it is just a fuel additive that you add on an empty tank with high octane gas. It burns carbon out of engine. It typically will turn off the check engine light. It is not a fix. The light will likely come back on eventually. It's more a hack to legally pass the emission test by turning off the light and emission testing.

The list of probalities are too many bcos most of these electronic parts has to be Original Manufacturer Parts and they are not cheap..depending on make and model...Oxygen Sensor..some card have 4...Cat..very expensive..Injectors..not cheap....if its not a genuine part...EML will stay on....or go off but your car won't run right....my mechanic put Bosch platinum on my Lexus..car won't run right😥..he said my coils were faulty..New coils..car won't run right...New injectors...I refused...during our argument he swore he put new Bosch platinum. ..told him to replace them with NGK iridium. .Bang..lights clear ..car starts running perfectly...Mechanic said he was trying to save me money hence the Bosch plugs.. so just beware with electrical/Ignition /emission components. .
Great job thanks for all the info.
Add an oil catch can to the car & never had to deal with these issues
I watched the whole video, what did you do?
lol at 11:35 its clearly shows catalyst monitor INC which mean incomplete. it wont trigger a code unless the monitor has been completed. in ca your only allowed to miss the EVAP monitor this vehicle would of failed in CA. emission testing vary by state. by the looks of az test would pass with out all the "converter cleaning" engine light most likley came back after the catalyst monitors was completed which can take up to 80+ miles of highway driving.
My 06 DTS has a few P0420 codes tangled within itself, EGR, HVAC, Bank 1 Low efficiency!
I never had a catalytic converter go out on an American car. It has on my FJ cruiser however. That's why I'm on here.
