    I am an Indian and I totally disagree with a few points here. Coughing, burping, farting in public is NOT considered as OK. It is considered the worst thing one can do in the public. Also, it is perfectly OK to hold hands or touch your partner in public, Kissing and hugging too much is not common though in small cities but in metros it is common nowadays.

      @@GeraldineOCallaghan lol don't listen to that crap. there's a group of indians that will marry you to the person who you kiss or hold hands in public. even if your like 16, they'll force you to get married. nothing he said is even remotely true. btw I'm an indian. burping and all etc is common but obviously it isn't decent, but it still happens.

    benefits of eating with hand
    1- intake of appropriate amount of food in the mouth
    2- intake of food at right temperature in the mouth
    3- no metallic taste because there is no spoon
    4- beneficial for health because when someone curl his fingers to pick up food he is giving himself acupressure therapy

    • @alvintifr
      @alvintifr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Pramedh Indra your first 3 points were enough to support and justify the eating by hand, but just by adding 4th bogus and pseudo scientific point (bogus not because it's wrong, but because it's unproven and unfounded) you made your whole argument bogus, and gave chance to someone who wants to demean this practice to take everything in your comment to the drains.

    • @alvintifr
      @alvintifr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @NIRAJ SINGH Please do not get offended, My point was when you try to justify any traditional practice on the basis of science, you need any of these 2 things to support your point: 1. Either the basis and the benefit of that are mentioned in the point are very obvious and can be observed by any person. e.g. temperature regulation, anyone can observe it without any scientific or specialized knowledge.
      2. You can refer to any written or even oral scripture possessed by the same tradition mentioning the same benefit that is in your point. Since your, 4th point can neither be observed by a non-expert nor you can provide any scriptural reference, even if what you are saying is true about its benefit it will be considered as mere coincidence or an unintended byproduct of the practice.

  • @GamingProfessorSoumik
    @GamingProfessorSoumik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How come this video got recommended to me after 1.5 years. Anyway I wanted to ask about tanning. Is tanning done for beauty purpose or is it done just to take care of your skin?
    In India skin whitening is done as a part of beautification. White skin is cherished as beautiful by many people. Nowadays the perception is changing. Recently Indian government has made it illegal to the sale of goods which are used for skin whitening.

    • @ayushchoudhary3176
      @ayushchoudhary3176 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly the westerners do tanning because in their countries tanning is considered a symbol of being rich, because in western countries a person gets tanned by going on holidays to tropical areas such as Carabian Islands, Mediterranean Sea, etc.

    • @GamingProfessorSoumik
      @GamingProfessorSoumik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This I've heard about but when talk West it includes a whole lot of countries. Hence I wanted to know about the Irish perspective behind tanning.

    • @GeraldineOCallaghan
      @GeraldineOCallaghan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Ireland we tan as we are naturally very white, for us we think we are too white so tan to look more beautiful.
      It's nothing to do with wealth or money.
      In fact, white people are deemed to be wealthier but tanned is more beautiful, in public opinion.

  • @pappanalab
    @pappanalab 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My grandma got married at 13 to a cocaine and alcohol addict, it's a problem. The pressure to get married and get married young is real. Parents can start looking to get their daughters wedded off as soon as they're in college and be deemed socially acceptable. Also, a large reason arranged marriages have a lower divorce rate is because of the stigma around it. It’s usually really hard for people to get remarried after a divorce so a lot of women choose to stay with an abusive partner rather than commit social suicide.

  • @MYAMPHO
    @MYAMPHO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Behind every culture, there will be a great reason. So Indian culture is not just few 100 years old... It has it's culture roots which dates back to 6000 years.
    1. Marriages
    2. Eating habits
    3. Praying
    4. Agriculture
    5. Medicine
    6. Science
    7. Surgery
    8. Education
    9. Spirituality
    10. Yoga
    11. Languages
    12. Mathematics
    13. Festivals
    If i keep on mentioning points like this it will take many years to explain, that why Indian culture is so great & vast to understand.
    Ireland is just a small happy country with hardly
    1. 2-3 distinctive languages
    2. 50-60 variety of main dishes (Food)
    3. 4-5 Major festivals...
    Like this... BUT
    In India there is one phrase
    "To know one country/kingdom you should travel across it's lands (miles together), and read millions of books about that land"
    So i hope in your next video, if you can do some homework on knowing actual things it would be better

    Very interesting and hilarious account of cultural differences between India and the West.. However a few points of difference.. 1) as for eating with hands, in the west i have observed many people eating burgers, pizzas, fried chicken with hands, i have not seen them using forks/knives... furthermore eating with hands is far more hygenic than spoon or fork as i use only my hand and not spoons/forks used by many other people... 2) PDA is not considered appropriate in public in India as sexual intimacy is supposed to be a private affair, which i appreciate as an Indian.. I find it strange that in a very formal and individualistic society like the west where people are very finnicky and touchy about their personal space, how does such intimacy in the form of PDA get accepted and practiced...3) it is better not to talk/converse while eating as it disturbs the digestive process.. surprising to find that while westerners are very finnicky/particular about doing things one at a time, eating appears to be an exception:):)

    West was different. India was one of the oldest civilisations. The life styles always differ due to demographic, and different beliefs people follow, climatic conditions , and the different religions followed by people. Christianity was only 2000 yrs old. British spread Christianity. Before Chirst there were religions and life styles existing. Change in times make different differences. Overall Mother earth is same for all to live with brother Hood.

That doesn't makes sense. Btw best of luck for your future video. Wishing you a lot of success in future. A proud indian 🇮🇳

    Yes in west people say thanks, sorry,and please but it is mostly fake especially sorry here in Canada. They say sorry, thanks but don't mean it as there eyes tell different from the words they speak. In India we don't say it because we mean it and don't need to say it cuz its real.

    Hello Dear,
    Many of the differences you pointed out are incorrect. It all depends on the CLASS of society you mingle in.
    For example you mentioned that public display of bodily functions is acceptable. While village bumpkins might display them, it is considered rude and uncouth in a polite Indian society to do so.
    There are many examples in your video like the one I explained.
    Please remember that India is more than 20 times the size of Ireland and there many groups within it.

    • @GeraldineOCallaghan

      Hello Sunshine,
      Thanks for your interaction with my video. I am very proud of it and as I say many times, in the video, this is a generalisation. I am not offering to speak for all the groups of India or Ireland for that matter. I have studied this content in great detail and believe my finding to be true on the whole. Myself and almost everyone else who interacted with my video are all of the same opinions, on the general consensus. You may find one point isn't relevant to your cast, that's OK, however your statement, 'many of the points in my video are incorrect.' Is in fact, incorrect.

      Also the comments about burping and farting etc below (he’s not impressed is he...) - I noticed loads of this, there was one guy who used to spit every morning outside my aunties house and you’d hear him really go for it until he got everything out. I think the western perception of manners/what’s acceptable publicly has crept in to sections of society in India & there will be some Indians who completely deny it because they think it’s rude or shameful (due to western influence) & some who are just like “yeah that happens” because they’re aware that your just a human being and you have biological processes, which can be damaging to your body to suppress. Not saying you’ll be at a dhaba & everyone gonna be guffing on your thali but the clear out of the body is really important - whether that sometimes happens in private or in more public spaces is up to the individual. I literally went 26 years never farting infront of a guy who wasn’t family because I was british raised, mixed & my step mum when we were growing up, she never used to fart infront of us, & you’d never know if she took a poo. This drummed into my head that this is a very private and almost shameful act which no one can ever know about, which stuck with me for years! How repressed is that!! After India I realised it’s okay, because everyone is so open - & now I just fart whenever I want

Just spend few days or few months yu will hardly know anything about India. Ireland is a small country so, don't compare with india.just touching hand, hug ,kis is not a sign of modernised. You should be modern by mind and heart.pendamic like corona viruse set a good example why we don't touch the stranger . Namaste Is the best of option which purely scientific adopted by Western Nation during pendamic.

    There are many differences one can go on and on .
    The marriage part I'll explain a bit more.( this is only in Hindus which is 80% of the population )
    The confidence of Arrange marriages is primarily from parents and elders from the society because AM works and every generation kids keep seeing there parents during their growing years.
    since marriage is a very very long term relationship and the belief is it should be only once .....Astrology plays a big role ( not the western astrology like the one Linda Goodman.... Hindu astrology is very complex) is the one and probably only way to choose the right couple as per parents and older generation in particular .......this gives confidence for the parents to choose a better prospects than being in blind ( again this is subjected to fierce debate and opposition)
