I really like the approach they took to the drums, vintage and really powerful, yet still has a modern feeling, but if thats how modern drums are going to sound from now on, than thats fucking awesome!
can anyone tell why sorceress does not sound like, say, ghost reveries with respect to quality of sound. the drums in sorceress album sounds as though the entire set is played under water, doesn't it?
Just curious, what are the shells? Maple/mahogany? For the record I think the drum sound is way too muffled in the mix, but that´s me. I respect their decisions though. Artistic freedom!

Lopez had a much more modern sound to his drums, because they were still making death metal albums when he was in the band. Axe also had a modern sound on Watershed, but since they've gone with this 70's old school vibe on the last three albums they're obviously trying to make the drums sound Jethro Tull-ish as well.

That's probably because live he has to cover a broader range of sounds, a lot of the old stuff Lopez's snare was super high.

I loved his sound on Watershed. On this track his drums sound VERY compressed and the snare sounds heavily dampened, which just feels unnatural.

Axe is a great drummer, but the mix this time around just sounds bad. Hopefully it's not the entire album, or maybe the 5.1 mix will sound better.
The mix wasn't bad but the album wasn't mastered. It makes a surprisingly tremendous effect to a song.
