I like your videos because you don't make fun of the singers and just say things like "that was embarrassing". You actually give your opinion on what they could have improved on and you praise them when they do it right. I don't sing at all, so really I don't understand most of the things you are talking about, but you are just such a positive person. I love it!

I know I'm not that good of a singer, but it's been very fun and it's very nice to know that there are techniques in singing I can apply to sing in a healthier way. And explained so nicely, too. Now I know when I strain, if my larynx shoot up (it turns out that that's one of my tendencies), or why I got stuck in head voice sometimes.

Vocal and phonological neutralizing. GAm English(Midwest/US Media English) is about the most neutral dialect/accent (phonologically), there is in the English Language. There are singers that can produce their spoken accents, whilst singing but it is pretty rare; listen to King by Lauren Aquilina: Her English English-Maltese accent comes out pretty strongly.

God, it's crazy to see how amazing that woman sounds isolated and in one take like that. It feels weird not to hear music along with it, but it also shows just what a powerful voice she has.

Jenna McDougall. Tonight ALive. Beautiful unique sound. Anything from Limitless or the song The Edge. Newer stuff is a little rough because she has been going through some issues I believe but the newest album is still terrific.

I just recently found your page and as a former choir singer, it’s fascinating to see the difference in your techniques versus my director’s.
Out of habit, I always revert back to my “choir voice” when I sing and it sounds so funky with most songs. So I love seeing how you break down these vocal nuances in a way a layman can understand while also teaching them how to learn it themselves. I’m hoping to pick some things up for myself so I don’t sound so stuffy and formal when I’m belting Adele in the shower. 😅

How can you tell if your pulling Chest voice up instead of using a mix? I am a natural belter, and I rest easy with big powerful vocals, but I know my technique isn't 'proper' per se. I can never tell if I'm using full chest, or if I'm using mix voice.
    Any suggestions?

Brittney Fulton all your belts are already mixed naturally. You just control how chesty or heady it is.

One of my favorite performances of hers was the acoustic version of Decode, where you really do hear that strain in her voice and her voice even does kind of break up a little bit. I don't know if it was an intentional choice or not, but it really does add a bit of emotionality and vulnerability to the performance which makes it so much better.

Great video :) I feel like hayley gets overlooked a fair bit from a technical standpoint because of the "pop punk" cliches she's attached herself too. I find her to be a very versatile vocalist that can nail a wide variety of styles. She definitely plays on the quintessential "hayley" vocals more in the studio, and those techniques can be harmful, but she balances it out live with many different influences and techniques. Not to mention how well she's adapted to modern music. She's a bit of an underdog in the pop world, but man does she have the same vocal talent as the best modern contemporary singers (and her vibrato and ability to mix techniques is fantastic).

In Adele's song When We Were Young she changes "when we were young" into "when we were young-a-ang" while belting the notes (-a-ang because she moves up octaves while belting) and its always made it really hard for me to master the song. Could you do a video on that song and explain all of that to me from an educated point of view?
