you can definitely see why hayley lost her voice a lot during the self titled album cycle. this last cycle was definitely a lot better for her. she’s using a different technique that’s much more sustainable, and even though she lost some of the ‘power’ in her voice, it’s a lot healthier and she’s kept her voice healthier on tour over the last year

Me too! I play classical piano and sometimes play around with some singing. I know I'm not that good of a singer, but it's been very fun and it's very nice to know that there are techniques in singing I can apply to sing in a healthier way. And explained so nicely, too. Now I know when I strain, if my larynx shoot up (it turns out that that's one of my tendencies), or why I got stuck in head voice sometimes.

I’m learning so much from these videos. I haven’t watched these in order, but I’ve been try to apply what I learn. Just watching these videos has made me more confident on relaxing my chords when in my upper register. I usually would tense my chords because I was trying to make my higher notes louder.

Vocal and phonological neutralizing. GAm English(Midwest/US Media English) is about the most neutral dialect/accent (phonologically), there is in the English Language. There are singers that can produce their spoken accents, whilst singing but it is pretty rare; listen to King by Lauren Aquilina: Her English English-Maltese accent comes out pretty strongly.
If you listen to HIM in their earlier stuff Ville sang with a British accent and later on moved to an american accent. Their Finnish. Interesting. Many bands do that. I found that particular transition odd

I just recently found your page and as a former choir singer, it’s fascinating to see the difference in your techniques versus my director’s. Out of habit, I always revert back to my “choir voice” when I sing and it sounds so funky with most songs. So I love seeing how you break down these vocal nuances in a way a layman can understand while also teaching them how to learn it themselves. I’m hoping to pick some things up for myself so I don’t sound so stuffy and formal when I’m belting Adele in the shower. 😅
How can you tell if your pulling Chest voice up instead of using a mix? I am a natural belter, and I rest easy with big powerful vocals, but I know my technique isn't 'proper' per se. I can never tell if I'm using full chest, or if I'm using mix voice. Any suggestions?
One of my favorite performances of hers was the acoustic version of Decode, where you really do hear that strain in her voice and her voice even does kind of break up a little bit. I don't know if it was an intentional choice or not, but it really does add a bit of emotionality and vulnerability to the performance which makes it so much better.
Great video :) I feel like hayley gets overlooked a fair bit from a technical standpoint because of the "pop punk" cliches she's attached herself too. I find her to be a very versatile vocalist that can nail a wide variety of styles. She definitely plays on the quintessential "hayley" vocals more in the studio, and those techniques can be harmful, but she balances it out live with many different influences and techniques. Not to mention how well she's adapted to modern music. She's a bit of an underdog in the pop world, but man does she have the same vocal talent as the best modern contemporary singers (and her vibrato and ability to mix techniques is fantastic).
In Adele's song When We Were Young she changes "when we were young" into "when we were young-a-ang" while belting the notes (-a-ang because she moves up octaves while belting) and its always made it really hard for me to master the song. Could you do a video on that song and explain all of that to me from an educated point of view?
I can't even put to words how much I love Hayley. She shaped me trough my early teens till my late 20s and her music and voice made a huge impact on me.

I've always enjoyed her voice, but my throat would hurt just listening to her sometimes. I guess I was hearing the tension! Would you say Pink does the same thing? I always think I'm watching her sing her last live song bc she seems to be straining so much on all her high notes..

Hayley Williams has such a nice voice. Making it sound different. It sounds even cooler hearing it without the music.
