To live as a teenager in the American dramas it all really depends on where you live and who you hang out with. Other than that most teens just do the usual eating out with friends or shopping or staying home, or that’s in my case since I live in a small town and the kids who do drugs all hang out together.

A lot of these shows that depict teenagers are made by adults who came of age when teenagers had somewhat freer lives (which I partly attribute to how much more homework they have nowadays, but that's just my perception; I also think they're better-appraised of the risks associated with sex). Statistically speaking, even pre-pandemic, teens are less sexually active than they were in the 90s and early 00s, and tend to start having sex older than they did in the 90s, though they probably still are more likely to explore their sexuality in high school than Korean teenagers, and of course pockets that resemble the old days still exist in a lot of places.
The source for this is the CDC, who put out a biannual Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Sexual activity in teenagers has declined to about 38% as of 2019 (I suspect it's even less in 2022), versus well over half being sexually active in 1991.

Yo this the best description of it imo. Doesn’t help most directors and producers nowadays are old men who just want a reason to live out their odd sexual fantasies with minors or people depicted as minors. Just look at Dan Schneider. And that was children’s shows. Plus it ain’t like teens want to see their real lives in shows anyways. We need the escapism our parents got us by the collar. We don’t get out like they used to.

    • @bingobongo7335
      @bingobongo7335 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

yeah. and sometimes youth today start having sex later for good reasons (responsibility, not feeling ready, not wanting to get pregnant) while other times it's due to increased levels of social isolation and mental illness than in previous generations (i think we can blame most of it on the internet and the increasing crushing weight of capitalism). i am in the latter category, unfortunately. i'm a 22 year old virgin due to depression and crippling social anxiety. i used to dwell on it a lot and be really sad about it but now i'm less so bc i realised so many people nowadays suffer from this problem. i'm now going to therapy which helped me raise my self esteem, curb anxiety a little and i am now finally able to make friends!
and i'm about to start anti-anxiety meds which will hopefully help even further 😁
point is, parents are so worried about the new generation being "promiscuous", meanwhile their generation was far more promiscuous despite all the media censorship. and the current social climate often creates the opposite of "promiscuous" people - it creates socially awkward hermits.

To all the people saying that k-dramas are unrealistic, you need to understand that not everyone's reality is the same. The country you're living in, it's culture and the surrounding environment makes all the difference. As someone who grew up in Asia, k-dramas are more relatable but that's only because my personal school experience was very similar to those in k-dramas (with the cultural differences of course; i.e. no aegyo). When I was younger, I thought American teen dramas were very exaggerated until I was told (and saw first-hand) that stuff like that does happen in the U.S. That kids are able to access drugs quite easily and that impacts the "typical" school life. Just because American teen dramas depict something so different from what I experienced as a teen doesn't mean it's unrealistic, it just means that it's a completely different life in a completely different country...

I'm from Asia myself and yeah the general people might show how their view romance like that because it's kinda taboo in our culture, politics and religion/tradition. But deep underneath you will easily find local's porn as if everybody around are having onlyfans or something. Btw I went to religious school and trust me it wasn't that innocent like the outside cover. I witnessed all those things with my eyes. I can't imagine the other normal schools feel like, since I heard so many rumours and news most of the times. At the end I do believe it's all about the certain area or different groups/gangs.
Anyway I don't just watch the series that came from both country. Cause for me those movies/series are just my entertainment and it's not always about relatable content. I pick it wisely since I prefer quality over everything. So I need ratings and reviews first before I jump into it.

Also, as another kid who was bullied I still don't think it's good to define those people by their past poor childish choices, people can grow up and realize that what they've been was wrong and work very hard to change it and you shouldn't wish harm on someone for something that may very well be a huge regret for them now or later down the line. Of course, it doesn't mean that such a beautiful school doesn't exist (Korean high-teen dramas are mainly filmed in very beautiful schools), but most of the schools are located in the middle of the city, and there will be large apartment complexes around them. The schools I attended were well-groomed and had many flowers blooming every season, so they belonged to the beautiful side, but the school scenery of Korean high-teen dramas looks like a small palace, not a school.

Kdramas are so comforting to watch and they show the innocence of love meanwhile American dramas from what I’ve seen only like to show the intimate side of love. American tv shows are so hyper sexual and for no reason, shows like Euphoria I find hard to enjoy and see the good in, yes it does help raise awareness to things such as teen dating violence but it doesn’t display certain messages the right and appropriate way in my opinion. Also those in the comments that say that Kdramas don’t portray deep or realistic messages are more than wrong, there are plenty of high school kdramas that portray and bring light to serious things that occur in society. ‘SKY Castle’ ‘Extracurricular’ ‘The Penthouse’ ‘School 2013’ ‘True beauty’ etc. all do a fantastic job in displaying and presenting certain messages. A show doesn’t need to be as vulgar, disturbing, and uncensored as some American shows to properly get across a message.

Most of these "teenage actor's" are actually young adults playing as teenagers because it would be weird and inappropriate having underage teens act out some of these scenes.

This just reminded me that Korea doesn’t really have sexual education for their students the way we do in America.
Granted American education isn’t the same across the board but sex education is still a staple over here. Maybe that’s why we’re used to discussing it as teens while Korean don’t really talk abt it until their 20s

7:38 I was born in 97 so I grew up when it was still "your future is based on getting into college and what college you go to" so your whole life depended on on that so if you were to young to work volunteer work would be on your college resume. I couldnt find anywhere that'd let me volunteer or work at when I could legally work at 14 so I had to go to a community College which was pointless😑 kids today dont understand how good they have it because back then it was so much harder to do anything even the ability to work for yourself now 9 year olds make more then a full time worker back then did so yeah.

For American teens, where you live and the people you hang out with really affect how you dress and the way you behave most times. The Ametican drama they showed are not true reflections of the life of an American teenager. Korean dramas, which I love, tend to focus more on teenage innocence and heavy duty to study.

Being a high school student in America is really up to the area you’re in, the school you’re at, and who you hang out with.
It’s also based on how you are as a student.

Growing up in the USA when I was in high school back in the 2000’s we worried about college 50/50 I would say and smoking weed was the only so called bad drug… it wasn’t until after high school and probably 2010’s that harder drugs was a lot easier to get now and Euphoria imo glamorizes drugs because growing up in that lifestyle and getting out of that lifestyle is rock bottom all the time it sucks and everyone is shady AF you lose friends, friends F*** you over, you learn to become selfish for yourself and only yourself especially if you want to get out of that lifestyle. Loyalty doesn’t exist and I makes you second question that word in general

Lol watch euphoria. That one is a wild ride. Messy, esthetically pleasing, a mixture of fantasy drama and real life shit that in its own way, helps paint a clear picture of what some young people in the US are dealing with. It's not a perfect representation but it gets its points across I think or it at least makes you think more, as you become more sympathetic to each character. I'd love to hear opinions of those outside of North America reacting to this show.

There’s a kdrama called Young Adult Matters and the girl falls in love with her bully (a girl) and I think they had something going on but overall, the show’s plot doesn’t interest me so I’m not gonna watch it. There’s also another one where the woman is with a man and her friend likes her (a woman) and they too had something going on but I’m not sure if they ended up together. Also you should watch Young Royals, it’s pretty good!! Season 2 is coming.

There’s also a lesbian couple in another show called Friend Zone 2: Dangerous Area but in season 1, the woman dates a man as she was straight then. The man doesn’t show up in Season 2 if I remember clearly. There’s a lesbian couple in a gay romance series called Bad Buddy. Do keep in mind that things like Euphoria are NOT marketed to teens.
(And they're all 25 due to child labor laws. You can make a young looking 25 year old work for days on end, but an actual child has to go to school, though they get around this with twin child actors sometimes.)

I just feel like yes American teen dramas has a lot things associated with sex but not all of them are just about sex. When people from other countries look at these dramas all they think about is how everything is about sex while the dramas actually show us things that happen in life. Kdramas usually show sweet cute and innocent 'love' while the american dramas talk about more realistic, mature things happening that people don't talk about. It does have some kind of love theme too but it shows us the cruel reality and how not everything is sweet and cute and how teenagers tend to do certain things for this 'love' or do it because of 'love'. Don't get me wrong, i love Kdramas but I feel like people should also know that its not always like this.

someone put a really good point about culture here. kdramas feel more realistic as an asian to me more than american ones because it is imitating what ive experienced. While american dramas would relate to american audiences more. its about the target audience. that's why american dramas look unrealistic to us because all those things arent happening here in that particular way.
