Vera wanted a simple and easy sleeping platform - so I made her the most complicated and over-engineered one ever installed in a Land Rover Discovery. Hope you enjoy the video !
    Thanks for watching.

This video was a bonus - three projects in one! 1) A very well built platform with multiple purposes, 2) A cargo barrier for added safety, 3) modified table with it's own storage location. Very nice Christian and Vera, very nice. You know you couldn't work for Land Rover - they wouldn't be accustomed to vehicle built right the first time!

Hi Rob. I'm a professional independent L/R R/R mechanic with over 45 years experience and L/R's haven't given me a moments trouble if you what you're doing considering what I ask of them. There are some great mechanics out there, including at some main dealers. My last 300 TDI Disco for example did over 500,000 hard and I mean hard miles, yet the block and crankshaft were still at standard size's with two original pistons in there and the gearbox still had the original parts in it apart from 5th gear and 5th layshaft gear. The transfer box was all original as were the differentials, propshafts and Universal Joints when I decided to scrap it. All I ever do is service my L/R's R/R's every 10,000 miles, which takes me about 3 months. I've rebuilt BMW engines fitted in R/R's from as little as 50,000 miles on them, petrol and diesel. Not because of the owners fault, but because of bad design, just to give some fair representation. Rant over lol 🤣

It’s just had suspension module and handbrake module fitted , Its going to be a weekend toy and dog walking truck . I intend doing all repairs and maintenance myself and these videos are a great help. Thank you for all the hard work guys. 🇬🇧

I built something similar but much less polished for my D2. Simple platform behind the rear seats. Fold the back seats down (but not folded forward) and they form the front of the platform with a narrow shelf to fill the gap. I put a vertical divider up the middle to provide support for the shelf. Slide out drawers underneath. My fit and finish is not nearly up to your high German standards. 5/8 plywood sanded and sealed. No metal. Simple.

This is a beautiful bit of engineering and fabrication work. Well done! It might be overdesigned for what it needs to do, but that's what allows it to be as optimized as it is. I'm confident this one was a ton of work; we only saw a small fraction of what went into it.
If a V2 was ever to be built, my only suggestion would be to consider using a composite panel rather than the 12mm plywood. You could have a similar moment of inertia to resist bending but at a fraction of the weight.
Also, a mattress/bed slat-based approach would be interesting too. I'm picturing ledges running the length of the platform on either side of the vehicle. Then you'd buy/build the style slats with the fabric webbing between them. You could store and then deploy them rather rapidly when the time came. But slats make a poor shelf for anything other than a mattress. Everything is a compromise.

    1. Congrats on reaching 10k subscribers! 2. Just a fantastic setup for the sleeping platform. Love how the cargo barrier has a dual role. This is one of the things I need to do on the next stage of my D3, but I'll try to figure out a less German (i.e. more simple, albeit less elegant) solution for mine.
    3. The rear folding seats has nothing to do with age. My D3 is a 5 seater from 2005 and the rear seats fold flat like on your D4. All 7 seaters had that completely flat folding setup, while most 5 seaters had your setup.
Cheers, and have a great vacation!

Hello Graham, that is a difficult question. I prefer the manual trans in our LR3. It fits the car much better and is unbreakable. I love the 8HP in my LR4 but it just does not shift when I want it on its own. It is nicer in stop and go traffic. But on country roads I miss a manual trans. The steering wheel shifters are not for me. I do not use them. Useless technology. They belong in a performance SUV which a Discovery is not. Christian

I want to see it with a mattress on top. Not sure that you would have enough room to sleep in there???

We use a Thermarest air matress. Yes, if you want more headroom, you will have to use a different setup from ours. But I like having a drawer and our Engel fridge. So this was the best compromise we could come up with. It is not intended for longterm travel, and we took a tent as another option for Philipp to sleep in. 🙋 Vera

A little late, but the OEM cargo divider uses a bracket which attaches into the bolt you removed at 18:00. Perhaps that would not be to the standard of German engineering 😉

Yes and also, we do not buy parts like that. The whole purpose of our channel is to own and use a Discovery without paying an arm and a leg for expensive OEM parts and Land Rover repairs. We manufacture those kind of parts ourselves. 😃👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

@@Vera_and_Christian totally understand! I was suggesting that was a simple location to use for attaching home-made brackets since it attaches directly to the C-pillar frame and requires no trimming 😁 I love your channel and what you inspire us LR owners to pursue
