Proud to be 3rd generation western Pennsylvania union fitter and 4th generation steamfitter. This is my family tradition, from my grandfather that was part of 356 and my father that was 47 then 449 and then myself as a 2nd year almost a 3rd year in June this isn't just a profession it's a family. May all my union brothers and sisters stand tall and just do the best you can, we all have our hard times but as a well oiled machine we can always strive and prosper. I bleed red white and blue, but more importantly I bleed black and gold. Long live us and long live 449, we are the standard. God bless.
as a recent apprentice, after 4 years of "real time" working with millwrights, take what you can, stick with who you like working with, learn what you can!!!! best job in the world!!!
You cant learn from books!! the guy that has been doing it for years is, is the best education you can get
I just retired from L.U. 74 out of Wilmington,Delaware. N I gotta tell ya the Union is awesome. Hats off to your training facility,n all the apprentices that learn!

It looks like apprentice steamfitters in the USA learn more. I live in British Columbia, Canada, and welding is not part of the steamfitter apprenticeship, even with the UA. I love your videos by the way.
Interesting. Welding seems to have become an integral part of a lot of the trades and the requirements have definitely changed over the years. When I speak to older steamfitters and plumbers, it makes me realize how much things are always changing and evolving. Thanks for checking out our channel.

Im kind of old to be starting on an apprenticeship at 36 yrs old
I'd worked lots of construction n mechanical jobs, operating machinery
Basically done all kinds of stuff
None of which really felt like a career
I'm concerned im too old for companies to want to take me on
I'm a fit guy, not like I'm agjng
I'm eager to learn
I just don't know what it takes to get your foot in the door either
Most guys I know who landed an apprenticeship had an uncle or dad in the trade
Me? I have no such luck
Any advice? I'm in Surrey.. last I heard the steamfitter union school was on anasis island

I’m taking the aptitude test here in September for 449. Out of all the test takers how many get accepted ?
It depends on the talent pool applying each year - there's really no set number.
Hopefully you know someone. Steamfitters are so much nepotism. Everybody’s related to someone.
@@fitter5423 it's not that my father and grandfather was well known and I had to apply twice. Persistence is key, I had welding stuff from highschool and I suck at welding hah but I never gave up.
@@fitter5423 all teamster jobs are like that I noticed. I just left ups as a driver and it was crazy how many drivers had retired uncles, fathers, relatives in management, etc etc. These people are never bothered or harassed like people who don't know anybody.
Man I’m coming right outa high school and gonna try to get into the apprenticeship program this year I would kill for a spot. Anyone got any advice?

**PLEASE HELP** I'll taking my aptitude test in a few weeks for steamfitters LU in philadelphia. Can someone fill me in on what exactly will be on the aptitude test (preferably from personal experience), including what math i should brush up on? Thanks in advance!
I'm not sure what I can and cannot answer. I would just reach out to the union itself and ask if they have any thoughts on things you should brush up on.
@@WmTSpaeder i did. They told me that it's a 5 part test: spatial relations, mechanical, verbal, abstract, and numerical reasoning. Thanks anyway for the response!

What’s the living wage while in the apprenticeship?
Hello I'm 20 should I take a whole 8 month welding course ,would I have a better chance to get into the apprentice program ?
Contact your local union and get their thoughts. I would apply for the apprenticeship program and if you don't get in, apply again. I know a lot of people that didn't get in on the first try.
Are they hiring for apprentices now?
You'll have to contact the steamfitters to see what's going on due to the pandemic.

The journeyman rate is $42.75 right now.
Looks pretty dirty and smokey. Looks like a lot of heavy hard on the back chain fall work in mechanical rooms.

Yes, missed the comment. Wm. T. Spaeder is a union shop. We interviewed apprentices that were working for us at the time and then went down to the technology center. UA449 is awesome.
