FAVERO Assioma PRO MX // How Tough Are They?

  • The most common question asked about power meter pedals, especially ones designed for off-road use, is "will they hold up?". In my experience the PRO MX have held up very well for all the conditions I've ridden them in. The same can't be said about the carbon cranks I've been using though!

    Shane I saw a comment at the back of one of your vids saying that this might be coming .. I waited patiently for something like a year or a year and a half for these to drop. Got mine on pre-order from the factory and they are absolutely fab! You can see the engineering culture at Favero in this product, they even provide standoff washers you can use to alter the q factor if you wish. 10/10 ☺️

    Received my pedals a couple weeks ago, full credit to Favero for lightning fast fulfillment and shipping once they had stock. I've done a couple MTB and gravel rides, and so far all seems good. Haven't compared to any other data source, indoor trainer is put away for the summer, but my Fenix seems to think my FTP on the Favero's is in the same ballpark as it was on the trainer so I guess that's a good sign. The documentation with the pedals specifically indicated whatever "class" of riding they could handle, which included drops/jumps up to 60cm. I've definitely exceeded that a few times on the MTB and all good so far.
    Main debate for me is whether I leave them on the MTB when I hit more impactful trails in Valemount or Bragg Creek later this summer.

    Installed my new pair yesterday and took the SSXC bike out for a short but always hard 1 hour bash. They worked great and provided me similar data to my Sigeyi unit on my geared mtn bike. I have never used a power meter on my SS so I am intrigued to see how things go.... and how I can use the data collected to maybe help my gearing choices when riding a bike with gears and power...

    These came just in time for a trip to Istria, & I've done several hundred gravel kilometers on them so far. Plenty of smaller and some large rock strikes. All good so far, but the real test will be MTB in the mountains. Regardless, a large part of the decision to buy was 7 years experience with road Assioma's (first UNO later DUO), which have been absolutely rock solid/faultless. Favero just seems to do things right.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to ride them on the trails yet, as the Sunshine Coast trails are super wet from the rain we’ve had since December. So far though, in the rain, whilst riding on road, they have worked a treat. They feel very smooth through pedal rotation. I think I may have to just firm up the pedals to make my shoes feel a bit more secure. Hopefully I’ll get out on the trails next week and I’ll let you know how they go Shane.

    I got a pair a couple weeks ago and they've been flawless. I don't think the 4mm or whatever of clearance between the back of the spindle and chain is actually possible on a GRX 2x setup, but you get 2-3 with a single washer and I figured that's probably enough. Have not compared power numbers.
    Crank boots -- meh, I just have bog standard GRX cranks and they're already beat up. No need to protect them and I don't like how boots look anyway.

  • @ojtamno
    @ojtamno 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I got mine as well. And since I'm this type of guy, who always breaks things, I found the first issue with BT connectivity with my Polar watch. Pedals do pair with the watch but the watch doesn't receive any data. I also can't calibrate pedals fro the watch.
    My engineering nose tells me it's rather issue with the watch but sth is off there.
    Oh, and regarding comparisons - one side version gives me ~5% higher reading comparing to my tacx neo.Which is not bad, considering that my drive is shit ;-)
    Edit: one more thing: I've noticed that my ProMX shows higher cadence (by ~1) comparing to my tacx neo. This might also explain a bit higher power, but I really didn't expect any difference here.

    Unfortunately my Pro MX-2 pedals are reading 8-10% high compared to my indoor trainer. I have two sets of the Assioma Duos with the SPD pedal hack. One set in use for 4 years and both sets working flawlessly. The indoor trainer matches my Assioma Duos.
    Another confirmation is that my heart rate is lower for the same power which supports that power is reading too high. Oddly, the Pro MX pedals are within +/-1% for the static weight test.
    I have set the crank length properly on my Garmin Edge 530 and in the Assioma app and of course done the manual calibration. I'm suspicious the cadence may be the source of the problem. Or perhaps the crank length value isn't being implemented properly. I'm running 165 mm cranks. Or of course I'm doing something stupid.
    The most recent 5.04 firmware update hasn't helped.
    I'm waiting on a response from Favero.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Do you have the ability to do a static weight test? Even if you don’t have an accurate weight, you’ll be able to use the same weight to see if the readings differ from your other Assioma pedals.

    • @clinlashway9147
      @clinlashway9147 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just thought I'd update this. The larger 8-10% error I was seeing simply disappeared. I strongly believe this was an error in the indoor trainer power (Zwift Hub One) rather than a change in the Favero Pro MX pedals. The Zwift Hub One auto calibrates anytime you coast for 5 seconds from some minimum speed. This is if you are NOT in ERG mode. I had done almost exclusively ERG mode workouts. So, it is very likely the trainer hadn't been calibrated in some time. This was made worse by having tested the Favero Assioma Duo pedals several months before I received the Pro MX pedals. So, there was plenty of opportunity for the Zwift Hub One to change calibration between the comparisons of these sets of pedals.
      After intentionally calibrating the Zwift Hub One, the Assioma Duos still match more or less, though read 1-2% higher. This could happen and the units still be within their respective specs +/-1% Duos and +/-2/5 % for the Zwift Hub One. This difference also matches the cadence difference. The Zwift Hub One cadence reads 1-2 RPM (~1-2%) lower consistently. I also compared everything to a separate cadence sensor. The pedals matched this sensor very well and the Zwift Hub One reading 1-2 RPM low.
      The Pro MX pedals are reading about 2% higher than the Duos, but I can only compare them indirectly. By this I mean I can compare each to the Zwift Hub One. I have done that with test rides that immediately following one and other using different bikes with the respective Duo or Pro MX pedals on them. Because of course I can't use two sets of pedals at the same time. But the difference seems to be consistent that the Pro MX read higher than the Duos by about 2%.
      I'm looking to test the pedals on yet another bike that has a power meter spider on it. If the Pro MX pedals continue to read higher than the Duos, I'll be convinced they do in fact read higher. Unfortunately, this will require mounting and remounting pedals which may introduce other variables.
      Favero has gotten back to me and requested I send them some test data for each. They want 5 minutes at 80 RPM. I plan to follow through on that, but want to make sure I have reliable data.
      Anyway, I'm still concerned the Pro MX pedals are reading a little high, and even this difference may not be real. They certainly are not reading 8-10% higher as I originally thought.
