Great video, Brandon! I've been a long time watcher of the channel and excited you are making more and more lions videos now that they don't suck. Keep up the great work. Go Lions!
Brandon's videos on the lions from when we did suck are actually epic. The lions vs refs video is an all-time classic that every nfl fan (and hopefully some of the Park Avenue suits) should see.
I watch pretty much all of your and Tom's content and I gotta say the way Tom's skits are highlight of his channel, your videos where you do a deep dive analysis into any given topic are a highlight of yours. You can tell you put a lot of time into prepping them and it shows. Great work, man. Hoping to see lots more about the Lions over the next season.
Largely as a result of this trade, each team was able to reach a level of success they hadn't since the '90s: the Rams won a Super Bowl for the first time in 22 years and the Lions reached the NFC championship game for the first time in 32 years. After a brief Super Bowl hangover (partially caused by an injury to Stafford), the Rams appear poised to contend in the NFC again, while the Lions have a young corps captained by fan favorite JA-RED GOFF and look to still be on the up and up. I'd say it's probably the fairest high-profile trade in terms of benefit to both sides in my lifetime.
I noticed that the late 90s early 2000s Broncos are pretty similar to the early 2020s Rams. That’s probably just me. Also wouldn’t that be something if the Lions were the ones to spoil the Chiefs three peat attempt because of this trade.
When Stafford was traded, I was cool with it. Stafford, is a great QB. When Goff came to Detroit in the trade, I was like, "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh." Because quietly, they set the clock back. Stafford, got His Ring. Goff, gets a fresh start. A great trade for everybody.
Biggest thing about this trade from the Detroit standpoint was that after we got rid of Quin-tricia and hit the reset button, we knew we were going into full rebuild mode. So Holmes approached Stafford after taking the job and was like "hey, where do you want to go?" The crux of the whole thing is that we wanted to do right by Stafford as gratitude for all he'd done here, and knew he wouldn't want to waste his final years on another rebuild. Even Stafford shared that sentiment saying he knew it was best for the team and himself to move on. What unfolded was arguably the most balanced trade ever made because the Rams got a Super Bowl with our longtime guy, and we've embraced Goff for all he's been able to accomplish in such a short time, along with all those great picks in the draft. Even if we don't ultimately win a ring with Goff, he's already done so much for this franchise and we couldn't be any more thankful to him for what he's accomplished. Never in my life have I seen this much optimism and hope with this team until 2023 began, and moreso after the run we went on. On the flip side I am happy for Stafford that he got that Super Bowl ring he had been chasing, and can finally get the respect he deserved from more than just Lions fans. It's really impressive just how well it's panned out even just 3 years later.
When I first heard of this trade, I was super happy for Matt and worried about Jared. Matt hoisting the lombardi after years of tough seasons in Detroit was fulfilling. I wasn't sure if Detroit would have been a good fit for Jared, at first. Thankfully I was happily surprised by Jared and Dan clicking well and now I hope to see Jared get a ring with Detroit!
It's amazing what Goff has done to the Detroit community/state, the team, and the all-around confidence boost this franchise has needed. He's gonna go down as of the greatest here for getting them to a Conference Championship, but if he somehow gets the team to the Super Bowl, let alone wins it, he could become the all-time greatest Detroit Sports Legend. That's how much we want a Super Bowl here
If my Rams don't win another super bowl this year (which they probably won't, I'll be happy with a playoff win 😅), I hope the Lions win their first super bowl. That fanbase deserves good things for sticking out the bad times
Thanks, I was happy for Stafford. But the 9-8 2nd half run my team had... It just felt different, and then the following year, besides a couple of bird teams, we picked right back up where we were and even excelled The difference: we were winning games we always found ways to lose.
You should have given that browns lions clip more love for sure. The longest ever nfl segment without a commercial. We don’t even get to see that anymore
Both my forever QBs tbh. I was so happy when Staff got his ring. Almost as happy as I’ll be when Goff gets his with my lions Edit: I will say, the “bridge QB” expectation was entirely external. Our head office was always all in on JG and the fanbase latched onto him quickly out of spite for Stafford asking for a trade lmao
A very important detail Is that Brad Holmes, our GM, was director of college scouting for the Rams. He is the man responsible for them drafting Goff in the first place, and when the Lions were making this trade he made it clear that he was doing it in part for Goff. He is and was always was a part of Brad's game plan, and now he's been able to make his game plan a reality.
I will admit at first I subscribed to the belief he was just a bridge QB until we could draft a future QB, or develop one behind him. I always thought he was serviceable and that he could play well, but damn did he ever blow away my expectations after that rough first season. Come 2023 he's completely changed my mind on worrying about the future and I'm fully embracing the Goff train to keep seeing how far he can take us, because I don't think just reaching the NFC Championship game once is enough for him. Plus he isn't too old, so we've got plenty of time to keep pushing it with him before needing to worry about a replacement
I like them both. Was happy for Stafford as well. But sorry buddy ;) Mahomes ownes this league. Goff is the only QB with a winning record against him though. But both games. The chiefs. Didn't just have a bad defense. But legit, an all time worse defence in history. While the rams had a top 5 defence. They still won.. but Mahomes is another type of animal
Goff has come out to of things pretty nicely. Stafford and Mcvay may have won a sb, but Goff has shown excellence in Detroit which has not happened to any team in Detroit in many a decade.
I didn't believe the Lions would take a QB in the draft after trading for Goff. I knew we would start him. Based on how Holmes and Campbell talked about him, he was going to stick around. I am so glad he's my QB. Due to Goff, I got to see something I've never seen in my life: The Lions winning a playoff game. Imploding in the NFCCG hurt, but we'll be back this year.
I have never been so happy as to be as wrong as I was about Goff. I have also never flip flopped on a player as much as I have on Goff. I thought "we get an acceptable QB to fill in for Stafford until we can draft a guy. 2 years and gone". Then Goff came in and killed it. Goff is my QB1. I will always be a Stafford fan, and I will always root for him when not playing Detroit. But Goff is my QB. I think both teams made out perfectly. Rams got a Super Bowl. If you ask any Lions fan "would you give up a QB and 2 first round picks for a Super Bowl win?", we take that every time. Detroit became a whole new team. I am a die hard Lions fan of 55. I have been through so so so many "we got the right coach finally", and "we finally got our QB", that I can't even keep count anymore. Brad Holmes, the killer sniper of the draft, and Motor City Dan Campbell, the greatest coach the Lions have ever had (sorry Wayne Fontes), have changed everything here in Detroit. I may actually see a Super Bowl before I die.
Just got my new black Sam LaPorta jersey in the mail yesterday 🤘 A crazy statement you can make that is 100% true is that Sean McVay won a Super Bowl two years prior to having his first ever first round draft pick
Being a Washington fan, I remember the Baily for Portis + 2nd Round Pick trade. On Washington's end, the trade had more to do with the horrible mismanagement of their salary cap, than it did with the team wanting to part with Champ. Since CB24 was at the end of his rookie deal, and Washington didn't have the cap space to sign him to a long-term deal, it made sense for Washington to trade for Portis, who still had an additional season left on his rookie contract. The additional year allowed Washington to clear some of the bad salaries off their books before they signed Portis to a long-term contract a season later.
If the Rams stay healthy in 2024-25 I believe they will be the better of the two teams. Would love to see a rematch besides the opener, in the NFC Championship!
As a lifetime Lions fan I love Stafford. Super thrilled that he got a ring. But Goff - I fucking love Goff. I genuinely think he is the better quarterback for Detroit and I am thrilled to see Lion's fans unite behind Goff.
Goff is a legit QB and I’m glad he’s back in the saddle in Detroit. I always liked him, especially because people couldn’t seem to respect him because he excelled in a PA offense.
Football has always been the ultimate team sport. The Goff/Stafford trade just proves it’s not about having a great player, it’s about having the RIGHT player. Both these teams GMs and coaches get that. That’s why they are both winning.
As a michigander and often reluctant lions fan, I was cautiously optimistic when the trade went down. Stafford was getting older and had mounting injuries, so we had to move. Even going into year two, many around me were shitting on Goff, but I was one of the few in my group to blame the lack of weapons rather than his performance. I thought he would be a bridge QB until we drafted someone. I never would have thought he might be the one to break Bobby Lane's curse!
If anyone is curious who were the players that were taken with the actual picks belonging to the Rams, well ... one was a bust, the other is OK, but not a "set the world on fire" type of player. The Lions traded up with the Vikings to get Jameson Williams, who ended up with the 1st round pick originally belonging to the Rams. The Vikings selected DB Lewis Cine, who is pretty much considered a bust at this point of his career. The Lions traded down with the Cardinals for the Jahmyr Gibbs pick, and cause the Rams fell off a cliff after Super Bowl 56, it ended up being 6th overall, which the Cardinals used to select OT Paris Johnson Jr. Not exactly a sexy pick, but I respect teams that invest in protection for their QB.
The Lions also drafted Sam LaPorta with the extra pick they got for trading down to 12 and Gibbs. Also with the third round pick they got in 2021 from the Rams they draft Melifonwu who is becoming a very good safety. Jamo did also cost 32 (Rams pick), 34 (Christian Watson which was traded to GB) and 66 (Asomoah). Lions also got back 46 (John Paschal) from the Vikings. Your breakdown was very incomplete.
That clip of Stafford getting hit, yeah there no shortage of those lol the dude is tough as heck. All in all the Goffense has been amazing Lets Go Lions!
I was never really hyped for Goff. When he was in LA, it seemed like - and I am sorry to say this - they were successful despite him or rather with him not because of him. However, over the years I really began to like him and, as a Packers fan, I love that the Lions became more than competitive. Honestly, the NFC North feels kinda strong and I am looking forward to some tough games.
Lions got the #1 RB after contact Gibbs, the #1 TE in the NFL, the #1 player in the NFL in Sewell and Jared Goff who's every bit as good as Matt Stafford who did in 3 years what Stafford never could win a playoff game for the city of Detroit. Who won last year? Jared Goff Jared Goff. Get used to it LA.
Ok dude you don't have to be a shitty little brat about it though. For real. Also the Sewell pick had nothing to do with the Rams but you are correct that Sewell is the best football player in the NFL. So you're 1 for 3 there. Nice job.
At least Rams did Goff right by sending him together with some draft capitals away so that Lions can rebuild fast enough for Goff to win. Although not a Lions fan, I really hope they can win a Super bowl.
This has been a fantastically equal trade! I appreciate your takes. If Goff gets Detroit the ultimate prize this would go down as the greatest move in NFL history. The Lions reset their entire organizational culture and the Rams got their title!
Goff led us out of hell, and Stafford led us to heaven. As long as the Lions stay out of our way in the playoffs I think most Rams fans will root for Goff's success. Rams House!
The only reason that the Rams added the other 1st rounder was to thank the Lions for taking on Goff's contract. FWIW, Stafford never had a team around him in Detroit like Goff has now.
Stafford earned a ring one year after leaving what was once a pitiful franchise, (which has since begun the turnaround of all nfl franchise turnarounds, meanwhile Mike Trout on the Angels turning to pumice while the residual effects of this nfl trade remains a popular topic in the world of sports
I honestly didn't know jack shit about Stafford, so when I heard we were trading Goff away after his show of insane guts in the playoffs, I was floored.
As a Lions fan I believe we will have won the trade when it's all said and done but right now it goes to the Rams. But for me judging both with how they played in a Lions uniform it's not even close. Between the 2 Goff is the more consistent QB. He always wins were Stafford always lost. I don't subscribe to the Stafford never had talent go research 2014's team. Stafford probably due to motivation of wanting to impress his new teammates or knowing that may be his only shot definitely played for the Rams in 21 like he never played in Detroit. His other 14 seasons it's been 1 and done in the playoffs though. Goff on the other hand has been incredible in a Lions uniform. People always try to explain his success away but maybe it's just him.
It was cool because you got to see Stafford win a ring. But then the guy they traded away helps turn the lions around so then you’re happy for him too. And it’s just good vibes all around.
13:25 You gotta stop saying Goff didn’t play well in the first season with the Lions. Goff’s passer rating his first year with the Lions was better than Matthew Stafford’s career average with the Lions.

@@innerspace56 being a walk on, going from school to school, working very hard to win back to back national championship, bro did not play highschool football well, so why would Kirby ever want to put him as the Bulldogs starter? Bro had to work hard for it and it was exhausting, they said the break helped Stetson, just hope he can do well this year
Hell I been a Lions fan my entire life & this trade brought me joy. Though I was heartbroken when Stafford left our organization truly turned around. Thanks for this Perna its nice to see people show my boys some respect
If Goff wins a championship in Detroit, it's a true win-win trade. Rams got the short term success with the immediate SB. Lions got the long term success with a new identity.
Let’s just hope Goff doesn’t get hurt & the lions became bad defending SB Champs.
And they both have bright futures
@@reymundorodriguezg You’re right. They definitely both have a lot to look forward to.
@@Rickman897 I doubt Goff gets hurt. Lions seem to always have an elite offensive line since he arrived
@@RogueBlackOp Yep. The Lions are definitely prepared. Something tells me they’ll be the ones to spoil the Chiefs three peat attempt.
The Rams had to win a super bowl to make the trade worth it. And they did. The Lions just needed to finally be competitive and now they are. It's already a win because both teams achieved significant goals.
Wouldn’t that be something if the Lions become the ones to spoil the Chiefs three peat quest with this trade?
I'm dead with the 'Fuck them picks strategy'.
As a bag on the head, SOL, Lions fan, watching them shit the bed for my entire adult life, and as a Stafford fan, I still think this trade is the greatest thing to ever happen in Detroit football.
@@innerspace56 Yeah, that's a good one.
Congrats on 600k. Always appreciated how you perfectly ride the line of producing lighthearted yet very insightful & entertaining content.
Wouldn’t that be funny if this trade caused the Lions to be the ones who spoil the Chiefs peat quest.
Found this channel by chance the other day and immediately subscribed. Love the content. Keep up the great work! One pride baby!
Lions fan here, been subbed. Love the content.
That's how much we want a Super Bowl here
Yzerman level
If my Rams don't win another super bowl this year (which they probably won't, I'll be happy with a playoff win 😅), I hope the Lions win their first super bowl. That fanbase deserves good things for sticking out the bad times
Thanks, I was happy for Stafford. But the 9-8 2nd half run my team had... It just felt different, and then the following year, besides a couple of bird teams, we picked right back up where we were and even excelled
The difference: we were winning games we always found ways to lose.
You should have given that browns lions clip more love for sure. The longest ever nfl segment without a commercial. We don’t even get to see that anymore
Awesome vid. So well done and needed to be said.
Love it when Brandon talks about the Rams 🐏 let’s listen in haha 😂
This is one of the few trades that worked out this well for both teams
Another great breakdown, thank you!!!
Both my forever QBs tbh. I was so happy when Staff got his ring. Almost as happy as I’ll be when Goff gets his with my lions
Edit: I will say, the “bridge QB” expectation was entirely external.
💀 you do realize your a Lions fan right?
I will admit at first I subscribed to the belief he was just a bridge QB until we could draft a future QB, or develop one behind him. I always thought he was serviceable and that he could play well, but damn did he ever blow away my expectations after that rough first season. Come 2023 he's completely changed my mind on worrying about the future and I'm fully embracing the Goff train to keep seeing how far he can take us, because I don't think just reaching the NFC Championship game once is enough for him. Plus he isn't too old, so we've got plenty of time to keep pushing it with him before needing to worry about a replacement
Lions ain't ever winning a ring, what you on?
I like them both. Was happy for Stafford as well.
But sorry buddy ;)
Mahomes ownes this league.
Who knows, maybe Goff & Campbell will bring the elite Lions from the 50s back.
what a poverty franchise lol
I'm reminded of the Philip Rivers - Eli Manning trade.
one of the only times it's okay to say both sides won
it's okay to be happy for both
I didn't believe the Lions would take a QB in the draft after trading for Goff.
Thanks for your coverage on the lions. It's cool to see some respect and the point of view of a non lions local
Both QB's will meet each other for the first game of the 2024 season.
And the game went into overtime with the winning team winning the OT coin toss. Just adds to the even-ness of this trade.
Just got my new black Sam LaPorta jersey in the mail yesterday 🤘
A crazy statement you can make that is 100% true is that Sean McVay won a Super Bowl two years prior to having his first ever first round draft pick
Mentioning the Bailey Portis trade, absolutely mad respect
Love that he's still saying "Twenty Ought Sixteen" despite comments telling him otherwise 🤣
the word is "aught" jsyk
I'll never stop
@@thatsgoodsportskeeping kayfabe alive brother 😂😂😂😂😂
I always love when Perna covers my Lions
If Goff wins a Super Bowl it’s better for the lions because they also got 2 firsts for Stafford along with gogf
When the Lions win a Super Bowl with Goff, it will be the greatest trade in the history of sports.
Especially if they became the Lions become the ones to spoil the Chiefs three peat quest.
@@davidagledhill Correct, but since that was already kind of mentioned in the video, there is no reason to mention it in the comments.
Another excellent analysis by Brandon "I'm beating Goff" Perna
This is the definition of a win-win trade
That clip of Stafford getting hit, yeah there no shortage of those lol the dude is tough as heck. All in all the Goffense has been amazing Lets Go Lions!
That’s my voice at 8:02 !! ❤
1:16 nice I can’t wait for Perna to give us information. Most of us have already known for years now.
I thought we were watching the future of the NFL with Goff in LA. Turns out a different shade of blue was the answer.
When Brandon dgaf about looking like he's 60 during his manscaped ad let's me know he's the real MVP.
Goff will win the Super Bowl this year and it will be the greatest trade in the history of sports
You never fail to spread me wide and fill me with ur content
One of the few times I can think of where the trade was a massive boon to both teams
Can you please do a video on the Manning - Rivers trade
I'm so happy to know that backing Goff (albeit as a long term place holder) while most other fans wanted to dump him early was a good thought
This has been a fantastically equal trade! I appreciate your takes. If Goff gets Detroit the ultimate prize this would go down as the greatest move in NFL history. The Lions reset their entire organizational culture and the Rams got their title!
Both will have great seasons this year imo
Detroit wasn’t even bad in 2021. Look at that teams stats and point differential. Hell, they lost to the ravens on a league record field goal
Goff led us out of hell, and Stafford led us to heaven. As long as the Lions stay out of our way in the playoffs I think most Rams fans will root for Goff's success. Rams House!
I heard there was one Rams fan who was happy that Goff didn’t get his ring last year.
Indeed they will. I feel they both worked out pretty well.
This was the trade of all time, purely due to how balanced it was.
Bailey for Portis was pretty good back in the early 2000s
if the lions win a ring, this is the best win win in sports

@@Parkswaves as an eagles fan, yall are my second choice to come out the nfc
The only reason that the Rams added the other 1st rounder was to thank the Lions for taking on Goff's contract.
FWIW, Stafford never had a team around him in Detroit like Goff has now.
9:20 Kyle Orton was always underrated.
No one ever mentions how many studs the rams defense had also, they traded for von miller that year also.
Please bring back the bowling pin sound effect in the intro, thank you!
The lions really said don't make me get goff 🥵🥵
I didn't know the stats, but I've always said this trade was a win win for both.
Good for them.
Goff and the Lions getting 14 wins this season. Write it down.
Now I want a video of you shaving in the first row at Seaworld.

Only if Lions get a ring then it’s a perfect 1:1 trade.
Who knows. Maybe the Lions will be the ones to spoil the Chiefs three peat attempt.
@@Rickman897 did you just spoil the script!?
@@boobookachoo Maybe?
