The Smith years are what brought KC back to relevancy again, what kicked off the run they're having now. His comeback from the injury, wow, all the time he spent in the hospital, wondering if he'd keep his leg, to if he would stay alive. All the time in rehab, mentally tough guy. I remember watching Aaron Donald jump on his back and yell out, no dude, noooooo!!! Was happy to see him retire.

People forget that the 49ers organization that Alex Smith was drafted into was a mess. He went through a new Offensive Coordinator almost every year. If Aaron Rodgers was drafted into this team, his career would've had the same trajectory

Old guy here. When you are drafted overall #1 pick, you have unbelievable expectations that almost no one can live up to. If based on his entire career versus #1 pick, then yes he is a bust. But when you factor in ALL his accomplishments, on the field and off, he is the ultimate QB.
If you’re a KC fan or a Washington Redskin fan, you’ll never say he’s a bust. The man had guts and determination.
I attribute a lot of Mahomes' success to Smith's mentorship.

Bust? No. Thankful? Yes. But he's an example of a quarterback with a limited ceiling who could never take our team beyond mediocrity. Cousins is the same, and he's easily the best QB we've had since the early 90s.
Ironically, he'd have easily won the Super Bowl on the Niners if he replaced Jimmy G. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't a team-elevator like Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Brady, or the other big names. He's that cusp of greatness that isn't legendary but absolutely isn't bad either.
Niners fan-- Smith was hardly a bust. He was a very, very good QB at literally every stop in his career and only "wasn't living to expectations" in the early years of the Niners organization being a clown show.

I'm a niner fan and I would never call Alex Smith a bust. Looked like it after first four years but niners were terrible and new OC every year. Once he got a good coach in jim harbaugh Alex turned into one of more efficient QBs in the league. Towards end of his niners tenure he had a great 10 or so game streak that he had highest QBs in league over that span second place being TB12. Alex then got injured and the Colin kapnick thing went down.

He had a goated coaching staff (multiple SB winning coaches and the rest are all playoff team head coaches now).
After his injury he worked with the owner to force the offense to play a different way and to hinder the coaches... He screwed himself. He wasn't forced to play injured he wanted to.

Smith is a textbook case of how you can ruin a player’s career with bad coaches and management. It’s to his credit (and Andy Reid) that he was able to piece together a respectable career.
Chiefs fans remember him for guiding us out of the quarterbackless wilderness we'd been in for almost a decade since Trent Green left. So starved we were at the time for just average QB play. Then he might have been the perfect mentor to the greatest QB ever.
Alex will always have a special place in my fandom for bringing a winning ethos back to KC. Then to have the mentality of a grown ass man and help mentor Mahomes... what a guy.
I swear I knew andy was gone go get this mfer before it happened. When we went a whole damn season with no wr td, damnit that was it for me. I couldn't WAIT for alex to leave, real talk. He's a nice guy, stand up guy... all dat. But I nvr wanted him on chiefs. The best thing he ever did for me was tutor mahomes.

I mean Cheetah would run the same routes even out of the backfield that Charles did when he would line up back there. Also JC might have been the best back in football not named Chris Johnson for his abbreviated career and their career numbers are eerily similar.
When you have no talent at WR you throw it other people. Literally nobody could or can do what Pat has done these two years with this dogwater WR group. I give Alex a pass. He was making Pro Bowls and won a playoff game. From where we had been he was light years better.
Alex Smith is legitimately my favorite player who never played for my favorite team (Eagles fan here). Became a fan of his during that final pre-Harbaugh season, cause I'm always a fan of the players that are able to come back from disastrous starts - I'm always thinking "oh, if they were somewhere else or had a different teacher, they'd do better", even if that clearly isn't the case for some.
Then he goes on to do really well with Harbaugh, gets traded to a team coached by my team's old coach, does really well there, and is able to basically shed off most of the early year criticism. Even when he was with Washington, I couldn't help but root for him to have good games.
I loved Alex Smith as a Redskin fan. He's not spectacular, but he will do just enough to win, but most importantly he won't loose you the game. He' the definition of competent.

I didn't see the Alex Smith injury when it happened, but I do remember it going from "your season is over" to "your career might be over" to "we might have to amputate your leg or you may die".
Thank you for this video Perna. As a hardcore Chiefs fan I will always appreciate Alex Smith for giving us stability at QB and for improving the culture at KC from one of losing to one of winning. I was emotional when we traded him, emotional when he was injured and emotional when he returned. Alex Smith will always be one of my favorite QBs and I appreciate everything he did for the Chiefs.
As a Chiefs fan, and as a fan of humans, I love the respect Alex Smith gets around the league. By all accounts I've read/seen/heard, he is a stand up guy who worked insanely hard to overcome adversity time and time again. He deserves the praise!

We judge busts by their entire body of work. Smith ultimately had a respectable career. I haven't met a 49er fan that dislikes him--plus, coming back from that injury he deserves every bit of credit he gets.
We judge busts on multiple variables. Sports aren’t a guarantee and that’s what makes it so interesting. You can have an amazing run in college, get drafted and just not pan out.. or there’s a litany of injuries that sap their athletic abilities. We’ve concluded players are busts on less than their “body of work”
I know he’s beloved by Chiefs Kingdom. Even during his ‘bust’ era in San Francisco, I never thought he was one. He seemed like a decent QB who was in a shitty situation of constant coaching changes & little support. I’m glad he finally got a chance to show what he could do with a stable organization.
He was also the #1 overall pick and never at any point played like a #1 pick so thats a bust to me. You cant just be ok as the #1 pick. You need to be an elite level qb and Alex Smith was never that
We definitely do not judge draft busts on their entire body of work. What matters is draft position vs benefit for the team that drafted the player. If Zach Wilson or Sam Darnold go on to be decent with another team, that doesn’t make them not a massive bust disaster for the Jets. Alex Smith might not be remembered as a bust by casuals, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a bust for the niners.

That's true NOW. But as a niners fan, that was less true back in 2010, when we were all ready to run him out of town. That he wanted to stay is a testament to who he is as a person. That he turned it around that year and got those same fans to cheer him on is a testament to who he is as a player (Yes, Harbaugh helped. But Smith still had to make the throws).
Alex is one of my favorite players of all time. What he overcame to find success is remarkable.

As a niner fan, I felt so bad for Smith since he kept having to deal with changes in head coaches and offensive coordinators. And he had a bad o-line where a lot of the time Vernon Davis was the best pass block when he should've been catching passes and getting YAC. I remember the first game he played with the chiefs against the niners in SF he got a standing ovation and a lot of love from the fans.
Can we all just stop and appreciate how good of a father this man is.

He was not always a middle of the pack QB. His career high passer rating was 75 on his rookie deal. Year 5 and 6 he was mediocre, then he became average in year 7 with Harbaugh before going to KC and becoming a solid middle of the pack QB.

It's pretty interesting that the two young QBs Alex mentored ended up in super bowls. He absolutely had a positive role in helping Kaepernick and Mahomes develop. While Smith did displayed well earned frustration at times, there really never was a single moment where any of us thought "what a diva". He genuinely seems like a good dude, and I don't think anyone in the world got a bigger cheer than the moment he decided to wear an Aarold Donald vest and walked away just fine. Who is more resilient than Smith? Honestly can't think of anyone.

Dude was 38-36-1 in San Francisco. Most people count someone a bust if they did basically nothing for the team they were drafted to. 81 TDs and 63 interceptions in 6 seasons + a missed season due to injury is not good. So tell me, is a average of 14 TDs, 10 interceptions, and 2,380 pass yards across 6 seasons good? No, it’s horrible. This guy was the 1st pick and all he did for the 49ers was get them a 2nd round pick from KC

Alex Smith is one of the greatest human beings on the planet. There’s no question. The guy just doesn’t give up and he’s so humble. I remember watching multiple games he’s down by 20 in the 4th quarter and he’s running on every 3rd down to keep the drive alive

I was a teenager when Smith arrived in KC. I grew up expecting the Chiefs to be bad no matter what they did. They put up 4-12 and 2-14 seasons like they were business as usual, and I didn't think there was a need to watch games. Smith's contributions to the Chiefs are, no exaggeration, completely invigorating. The fact that he put up solid numbers, played smart football, AND embraced his role as Mahomes' mentor meant so much for fans like me. He wasn't lighting up stat sheets, but without Alex Smith, I probably wouldn't be a football fan. He did a lot for Kansas City, even if Mahomes' accomplishments overshadow his own. I couldn't be happier with what he achieved.

I wouldn't call him a bust. If he and rodgers swapped places in the draft, the bust label never would have been applied.
But he was a solid career, made 3 pro bowls, led the league in passer rating one year, and led his teams to 6 playoff appearances out of 12 possible opportunities. (I'm discounting Kaepernick's year and the 2 years he was injured all season in 2008 and 2019)

I place Geno Smith in a similar category. Some players legit just need a lot more time maybe bouncing around a bit before they fully bloom as players.
How was he a bust? He struggled the first like 3 years when he had 3 different coordinators, then got them basically to the Super Bowl, then was a perennial playoff contender in KC with solid numbers. How is that a bust?

Thanks for doing this on Alex Smith. Class act and did amazing recovery. Yes, you are right, there are many of teams, and organizations that have thrown rookie QBs the the wolves and many of them did not make it out alive.
As a Chiefs fan I will always remember and love Alex Smith for everything he did. He deserved so much better than how his career played out.
Great coverage of Alex. As a Chiefs fan, he really showed up and played great. He was #2 in passing yards one year and like you said, threw least interceptions. That is beyond winning football, that is pro bowl level (which you reported.) Also from my perspective, we did have an issue with him in that he'd not attempt long passes, even when receivers were open during a span with the Chiefs. And, when he did, it showed long passes were not his strong suit. But, at the end with KC, he was throwing and connecting on long passes more. That may be due in part to Tyreek. I think you did a good job of explaining it, which is that Alex was near the top QB, stats, wins and all, and was even playing his BEST, right when he got let go for the upstart. Finally, PM15 to this day, as does Andy and all of us in the kingdom, give Alex Smith so much credit for how he helped get Pat up and going in one year. Alex will always be loved in KC. At least you (Perna) and the Kingdom agree on that.
