  • Marcelino's cam mod, aka MCM.
    First of all I am not a mechanic and you should check all parts and torque specs for your specific model yourself. I am also not responsible for any injury or damage to your vehicle of you do this.
    This mod SHOULD work for all KLX 250 models from 2010 and newer, as well as select KLX 300 models. I am not sure which ones so check for yourself. If you have a carbureted model, you'll need a rejet to get the benefit of this mod.
    You will need size 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 17mm sockets, and probably a 8mm open end wrench. A small extension, a spark plug socket, and a 5mm Allen wrench. You'll also need some non permanent lock tight, and liquid gasket like permatex ultra black
    I would recommend also havening a small torque wrench, a 8mm Allen socket, feeler gauges for your valves, a wire brush and a spark plug gap tool. Might as well get a new spark plug too. Consider getting a new valve cover gasket and new O-rings of needed.
    Thank you to Marcelino for coming up with this mod, and Klxster and klx678 from the kawasaki forums for putting together the guides below.

    Well, just got the mod finished and went for a ride. The only way I can describe it, can be the low end flubiness is gone and the engine feels tighter. Gave new life to my 2019 KLX.. thanks for the video:)

    Seen the post on kawasaki forum so it bringed me here. Did the mod on a 2016 efi and the difference is noticiable, now I use one gear less than I used to and the power is where it has to be so I completely recommend it for an offroad use. Thank you very much for the video and greetings from Barcelona!

    I did this mod and have alot of mixes feelings about it, i really like the power on take off and it really is a mod more towards offroad use, i unfortunately couldn't get my bike to settle on the idling it would go back and forth and if i did get it right once riding and turned it off it would be messed up again on next cold start. It also made my new delkevic exhaust sound different than before to me. I eventually went back to org and left spring out and it starts super easy now and idles perfect. Fyi i didn't see any difference in top speed my bike maxes out at 82mph using gps using both setups. It just gets there differently and i drive more in the HIGH side of the rev limiter so it just wasn't for me, and i felt like i needed a tune to get the idling straightened out

    I really want to try this mod with my KLX but it's a bit intimidating. I'd be scared I'd do something wrong and them miss a few weekends of riding! Thanks for the video!

    Would this be recommended for the 2021 KLX300SM and what kind of difference should I see if it is recommended. Assume same steps only the valve clearance check might be different.

    • @SaltyDitchDr1275
      @SaltyDitchDr1275  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would look into it. I know nothing of the new 300s, the original thread talks about it being done on the old 300 klxs, but I can't say it will work on the new ones, or that it's even safe. I would ask around on the kawasaki forums

    Sweet video, just want to confirm. What does removing spring do ? For acr. That is the only part I feel I will have trouble with modifying or repositioning

    • @SaltyDitchDr1275
      @SaltyDitchDr1275  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because you are adjusting the timing of the exhaust cam, the ACR timing is also adjusted, and will cause problems starting when cold, and will not start while hot. It releases compression to make kick starting easier. Electric starts do not need this assistance. Just removing the spring will solve that problem without having to remove the entire ACR. It's been done many times with no issues.
      The spring keeps the ACR from disengaging under low RPMs, under idle speeds, releasing compression. At idle the springs tension is overcome by the spinning force. Removing the spring let's you keep that compression even at "starting" speeds

  • @nicknastyyyable
    @nicknastyyyable ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a kickstarter on my 06 would doing the mcm and taking spring off kacr affect kick starting?

    • @SaltyDitchDr1275
      @SaltyDitchDr1275  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The KACRs function is to reduce/release compression in less than running RPM scenarios for kick starting, especially when hot. If you take it off it may make it more difficult to kick start when hot. However I've read 250s are not that hard to overcome the compression anyways. So I'll leave that up to you but that's the info I can give you. I've never tried to kick start mine

    Have you noticed an increase in power since doing this? Torque increase? I would much rather do this mod vs a big bore kit.

    • @SaltyDitchDr1275
      @SaltyDitchDr1275  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have not ridden a big bore kit, but for both my bone stock KLX, and my modded KLX, (both EFI) the power increase is noticable, (I feel it was more noticable on the stock one) and it moves the power from 1 to 2k lower in the RPM range. I wouldn't do this if your looking for top end speed. If you want more usable power lower in the RPMs, then this is your mod. If it's not enough you can always still go with a BBK. Along with a smaller front sprocket, open airbox, a power commander and exhaust, it really wakes the bike up

      @@XeseKaiPese it does shift power more towards the lower RPM range, so maybe just a little, but it's not like changing your sprocket toothing or anything.
      I have both the MCM and a smaller sprocket and can still do highway speeds.

    So just remove the compression relief spring and thats all i have to do there right?

    • @SaltyDitchDr1275
      @SaltyDitchDr1275  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it can just be removed. If it's not removed, the ACR with the change in the timing can cause problems with hot starting. You can remove the entire ACR, but just removing the spring is a simpler solution. The spring is used to help with kick starting, but since it's an electric start it's not needed.

      @@johnathankelly939 it will get to top speed a bit quicker, but your top speed will be slightly reduced. We're talking a few mph.
      This mod is really helpful for anyone doing dirt riding, or inter-city riding.
      The bike will never really do highway riding no matter what you do to it, it's gonna feel anemic at those speeds.

    Good video. I just got a new to me 2007 KLX 250s and am going over it. The cam timing wasn't right so I looked for videos on the mcm mod thinking they had done that but nope! My sprockets haven't been turned on my cams and my intake cam is 2 teeth retarded(?) (counter clock wise) and my exhaust is 1 tooth retarded so I guess the cam chain slipped time at one point. Don't know how it was still running lol!

      @@SaltyDitchDr1275 I've only put a couple miles on it since I got it but it wouldn't idle less than 2krpm easily. It needs the mech timing chain tensioner bad (already ordered) and valves adjusted (looking for shims now). Other than that it ran smooth. Can't comment if it was down on power because I just don't have that much experience on it yet.

      @@calsnow6807 So my father just bought the 2021 KLX300R to follow my 2019 TM Racing EN300ES (full engine modified-58RWHP) 2 stroke, and 22 CRF450R that's being built as an RX with over 60HP to the wheel with a stage 3 engine package from XPR Engines.
      I'm just wondering what could be done to get some more bark out of my father's bike for him to chase me down? I know the air box mod, power commander, and full Pro Circuit exhaust system (which he'll be ordering here shortly), but what else could be done?? What would you recommend for primary drive gearing?? He wants some more grunt down low, but still wants top end... :/ 🤔
      Did you find out about the cam mod if it helps?? I assume it would make it have better tolerances and timing...but don't really know? Maybe he should send it in to my engine builder at XPR or even Twisted Development?
      I assume just from the sprockets, air box, power commander, & PC Full Exhaust he will have more than enough power since he's a beginner C rider??? But he wants more fun out of it too cause he rode the TM before buying it, and it scared him, but it makes him want to get the most out of his engine because of the fun factor. Thanks and I appreciate your time. 🙏
