How to Get Radiant Stars That Don't Overwhelm an Image

  • This two-part method is the best way I know to get colorful, noise-free stars that are radiant yet do not overwhelm a DSO image. The development portion reliably produces a colorful, noise-free star plate, and the composite portion preserves the stars' luster yet keeps them in balance with the DSO when they are added back to the image.

I've been struggling with flats in monochrome, so I have been fiddling with all kinds of things. I hit on the unique look of that blending mode, but I wasn't sure if it made sense to use anything other than screen. This video helps legitimize that as a viable alternative in star processing. Thanks!

Color Dodge intensifies color and pulls down darks and pulls up brights, so it intensifies color while tightening the stars, which is how it imparts its glow. If you feel the color is a bit overdone, you can just put a Vibrance/Saturation tool in the Color Dodge star plate layer and pull the saturation down just a little. If you prefer to shift the color a bit, put a White Balance tool in there and adjust the color temperature. Hope that helps!

Really like the way it has those brighter stars look. Will try it on the Crescent that is being imaged these few cloud free short summer nights.

This is interesting. Cool that you discovered it by accident, I love that! Do you have any videos on editing in Affinity Photo? I would hate to buy it just for this star method. I'm very happy with the Seti Astro star stretch script and B. Blanshion's reduction, but if you have some videos showing the use of Affinity Photo in editing, could be enough for me to purchase it.

You're in luck! Affinity Photo is presently on a 50% off flash sale for about $40 USD. Almost all my videos on astro photo editing are about using Affinity Photo. It is an exceedingly powerful photo editor, and I prefer it to everything else out there including PixInsight. I use PixInsight only for early editing processes such as stacking, color balance and initial histogram stretch. I also use PixInsight to run the RC Astro Xterminators since that's where they run best. But as soon as that's done, I always export the files as uncompressed lossless tiffs and do all the serious editing in Affinity Photo.

@SKYST0RY Yes, I know it's on sale. I've been eyeing it and deciding if I should buy it. I'll check out your other videos on using it, thanks!

Sorry to bother you again. I was going through your video library. Is there a spot you can recommend for me to begin learning an affinity photo 2 workflow? I took the plunge and bought it because I wasn't sure when the sale would end and didn't want to miss out. Seems like it's been on sale for awhile. Anyway, can you recommend a good starting point in your library? I have a PI workflow, but would like to start doing the curves/saturation etc. in Affinity, unless you have even better advice. Thanks!

Totally okay, and I am glad you got it. The flash sale started about 2 weeks ago. My guess is it'll end Sunday or Monday. You won't regret it. Affinity Photo gives you 99% of the power of PhotoShop without the insane scam of a price structure. For astrophotography, it is a superlative tool.
Anyway, I really should make a couple videos on my complete workflows. I was meaning to do that with my OSC data but due to a freak double crash a few months ago, I lost both my hard drive and backup drive that had my OSC data, so it'll have to wait till I get the new mount. But I will make a complete mono workflow soon. Much of it is transferrable to OSC workflows anyway.
In the mean time, you might check out two playlists on my channel: Histogram/Curves Relationship and Sharpening & Refinement.

I'll patiently await that. I've been using James Ritson's macros and they are great, but I find the biggest problem with a majority of tutorials is they are always working with pristine data. I use a Seestar S50 (don't judge me, lol) and while I'm able to get decent images, I always find the tutorials don't really match up with the data I'm using. So I've been doing a lot of the processing in Pixinsight and moving over to Affinity Photo 2. Feel like I'm always sacrificing something to get what I want out of the image, that's why I'm interested in Aff Ph. Anyway, thanks for the responses. I've watched those videos you've referenced but I'll check them out again. I really would be appreciative of a full workflow video in the future. Sorry to hear about your data loss!

Looks fantastic and a great method but the video was done way too quickly to easily follow along. Seemed like you were trying to beat the clock so to speak.

Often when I make these videos, I end up realizing I left something out then have to re-record a small part and squeeze it in, leading to having to talk a bit faster.

@@SKYST0RY All your videos are great! Just following your path of discovery is a shared education - thanks for putting these together. I think if there were pauses between each discreet set of operations, and with that that your voice over matched what is being done on screen it would be a tad easier to follow... The summation at the end really helped ;-)

@@Seafox0011 Thank you. I'll try to slow it down and keep it all synced up a bit more. I try to focus more on the principles than the actual software so people can also apply the theory to editors like PhotoShop and Gimp.
