Vexatious Light Worms & Where to Find Them: Getting Clearer, Cleaner Globular Clusters
Globular clusters are spherical, tightly bunched groups of stars that orbit galaxies. They are virtually free of dust and gas but photos often depict serpentine, hazy shapes within them. These "light worms" are artifacts that result from the stars being packed so densely they appear as a haze that is then misinterpreted and exacerbated by various sharpening and deconvolution tools, making the light worms worse. But since globular clusters are virtually free of dust and gas, they should appear clear and clean, yet an infestation of light worms can be hard to eradicate. No more! Light worms can be rooted out, and here's how!
You can see full resolution images of the Rose Globular Cluster with and without light worms here: www.astrobin.com/m7x5eu/B/

      @@SergeyShakhdinarov I would have to see an example of this process. Maybe put up a video of it. I tried the process yesterday after you mentioned it. I found it's not ideal for a number of reasons. Structures such as galaxies in the surrounding region will be left out. The empty space becomes imbalanced so tools don't know what to make of it, thus STF-based histogram stretches will fail and manual histogram stretches become touchy. But, above all, you will lose the special light quality between the stars found in globular clusters.

    do NOT get WYZE... they were greast when they first started.. years ago.. then they sold out and became absolute shit.. not only with removal of features you already PAID FOR but with more and more bs firmware and trying to change the "deal" so they can charge more. and more for less and less. The changes to try to prevent you from using cameras with your own local server and/or trying to force you to you their servers is a prime example.. and thats not even touching on their massive breaches of security which are so pathetic its not funny.. and their attempts to hide such is even worse! Meanwhile they don't even make things themselves.. its 99% f products rebranded with worse aka hobbled firmware added If you really want one of their cameras get a gen 1 or 2 with OLD / org firmware.. or better yet source them from the actual MFR.. yes.. such can be easiily done.. and CHEAPER as well as with better functionality. Remember WYZE is DUMB.. and anyone buying any IP cam that cannot function w/o internet access and w/o connecting to their servers is a fool.. there is absolutely ZERO reason why such should ever need to do so to just simply do its basic job.. it work as a fuking CAMERA.. and not a mini-spy device for the asshats at the disgusting mess that was formerly WYZE before they sold out.

    Two good brands of outdoor security cameras are Reolink and Eufy. Neither of these brands have ever been implicated in the suppression of the Uighur people.

Twice it has saved me from a disaster (a cable snag and a leg collision). I believe that the night vision is achieved by the camera’s own infrared light. Somewhere I read that night vision should be turned off during a photo session because the possible (🤔?) ill effect of the infrared light on the pictures. In my case I don’t need the night vision on because the camera is sensitive enough to work fine with just the surrounding light pollution (Bortle 8 here🙄).

    • @SKYST0RY
      @SKYST0RY 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a good question, though I hadn't even thought about it before, so I guess it doesn't create a problem for me. I've never been a fan of piling my power management, mini PC, etc, on my OTA with the idea of "cable management". Using that strategy, I would be exchanging cable length for a lot more weight and mass on the mount that would work as a wind sail and give the mount a harder time. Instead, I braid the cables so they can't spread out and get tangled, then I strap them going up from the power supplies and mini PC to the top of the pier, which minimizes weight on the mount as well as objects that could catch night wind. I also avoid sharing USB ports because that's one of the biggest causes of hardware communication conflicts, so I don't worry too much about running equipment on shared USB ports. The only ports I allow to be shared are the low use ones that operate the power box and external SSD.

Hopefully, either NINA or Hocus Focus will adopt FocusMax's approach whereby it will select a start based on your brightness-selected criteria, plate solve and slew, conduct the autofocus run, then slew back to the target and resume imaging. Relying on finding a suitable start within the imaging FOV doesn't seem like the best approach, and certainly not if it means have to do the back and forth manually. The current way always seemed clunky and I spent a lot of time looking for a way to make it do what F'Max does.
