    Hei Ben Happy new year! Great video! Can you please explain me why i see two events of the same purpose in GA4? For example i see ''phone_clicks'' as event and i see and the value of the trigger as event which is ''tel''. Should i have them both mark as conversions?

    Thank you for a wonderful in-depth, step-by-step tutorial. I shared it in my LinkedIn if someone else was as puzzled as I was. I have a question. I created the tags following all the steps (Variables/Trigger/Tags) in GTM but was not able to see them right away in GA4 (Repors/ Engagement/Events). Should I add them manually or i should just wait 24 hours? Thanks in advance!

    • @LovesData

      You should see them in the real time report as soon as people perform the action, but it will take 24 hours for events to appear in the other reports.

    if conversion of phone click is added through google ads, then also ga4 event of phone call event has to be made?

  • @petelonghurst595

    Great tutorial - many thanks. Is there a way to set a minimum call duration for the conversion to be counted ie. 30 seconds? I know this is possible in Google Ads (calls from Ads) but can't find anywhere to add this in GA4 for phone clicks from their website. Many thanks.

    • @LovesData

      Thanks! You would need to use a third-party call tracking solution to track calls based on duration.

    Hey Ben, Excellent video as always. I followed every step but I always get "Click text" as the number not sure why it's not returning the phone number as variable!

      Thanks!
      In Tag Assistant, you'll need to select the data layer event that triggered the tag. It will be on the left and it will be one of the 'Link Click' events. Then select the tag, and ensure 'Display Variables' is set to 'Values' on the top right corner. This will then show you the value being passed to the tag.

      @@LovesDatahi there! great video! I have the same issue as above. The data layer you are talking about is found after we do the preview of the event right?

      @@SandhiyaLoganathan I’m referring to previewing the data layer using Tag Assistant (clicking ‘Preview’ in GTM).

    Hey Ben! How do we track how many of these conversions actually resulted in a call? If they click the phone number extension on our website but don't actually go through with the call, it still counts as a conversion. Anything we can do about this? Thanks!

    • @LovesData

      There are solutions that will switch out the phone number on your website. They provide additional tracking options, but there are disadvantages to this approach. My preference is to factor in non-converting calls when analyzing results. You can also tweak conversion value to account for this too.

    • @sportzman14

      @@LovesData Thanks! That's what I was thinking, assign each conversion a value of 0.2 or something based on the frequency of calls that actually make it through. Would you happen to know a % benchmark I can use?

  • @POWPOWpowlll

    hey, love the easy explanation but I have an issue. On GA4, analytics tells me my client received 26 (conversion) calls yesterday, but my client says otherwise and rarely received any calls from yesterday. what am I doing wrong?

    • @LovesData

      An event is collected for every click on the phone number. If a call doesn’t connect, your client doesn’t pick up, or the person hangs up, then the call event is still collected. I recommend working with your client to establish an average call-to-conversion rate and use this to adjust for outcomes.

    • @POWPOWpowlll

      @@LovesData my client sent a picture of her call logs from yesterday and it's different from analytics report. If I establish an "average call-to-conversion rate',' like you mentioned maybe it will fix itself. Have you created a video on how to establish an average call to conversion rate? thanks

    • @LovesData

      @@POWPOWpowlll I don’t have a video on this. You’ll just need to divide actual calls by the number of call events.

    Is there a reason that a value would get passed on the footer phone number but not the contact page phone number? They both fire the tag but one passes a value and the other does not.

    • @LovesData

      It's likely this relates to the variable being used in the tag.

    this isnt very effective to track an 'actual call' unless you remove the link from tablet and desktop and also ensure the user wasnt just clicking the link. clicking a link is not a phone call.

  • @orphan_kid

    Imho, not really helpful. Got on this video searching for actual call tracking, and not tracking clicks, which is actually a piece of cake. The reason is that we can't know if the click was on purpose or not. Thus, that's not much of use. Just sharing my opinion, no intent to insult or something.
