    As a soldier who fought in Iraq in the early 2000's, this song always hits me so hard, every drum beat is a bullet or bomb burst that was fired from a politician's gun, but I pulled the trigger. Powerful message, we feed the war pigs every day.

      I was in Iraq in the early 90’s and I was listening to Bob Marley , til this day every time I here Bob I zone out back to being there , so I feel what you are saying and indeed when I came across this song , the message grabbed me and it’s just such a powerful song in so many ways , ✌🏾🙏🏾

      Sabbath is badass...but let's make sure we mention Led Zep and Deep Purple along with them when we are talking about "creating the genre". All the old timers recognized that as truth. It was these three, and there massive collective talents all hitting, that together truly launched it off.

    • @rdhudon7469
      @rdhudon7469 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this genre of music evolved but sabbath owned it . Dazed and Confused came before this and can be described as the same genre same with Voodoo Child . If you dive into the Yardbirds , they had some pretty dark and bleak stuff like Still I'm sad . It's not like flicking a switch there is an evolution with a host of influences . Judas Priest took the blues out of metal and it can be argued they "created" pure metal but it was an evolution .

    These guys were born just after the end of WW2 in Birmingham. It was not a pleasant experience in the working class parts of England in the post war period. It certainly spawned many great rock bands though, and I mean the UK as a whole in the 60’s and 70’s. Black Sabbath’s first five albums are amazing. Can’t go wrong with anything from them.

    • @gregrambo606
      @gregrambo606 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This song was written by Terry "Geezer" Butler, including the lyrics. Geezer wrote all their lyrics, not Ozzy. Originally, this song had nothing to do with war. It was about satanic cults, and how stupid they are. It was originally called "Wirpugers day ( I'm close on the name, but wrong), which Butler said is like Christmas for satanists. (It's a bad word in England). Butler said the record company made him change the title of the song or they wouldn't allow it on the album. True story.

And to think if back then when the media tried to put a stop to rock n roll we would have never had it. Music changes with time they said , im still listening to the old rock n roll.

    Black Sabbath never got the recognition for their anti-war-establishment-drug songs back in the day. I don’t think they got the credit they deserved for those sentiments that we heard since and hear now in the Heavy Rock genre. Put Children of the Grave, Hand of Doom, and Sabbaths Love Song to Weed, Sweet Leaf on your play list. If you indulge, definitely enjoy with a side of sweet leaf

    Oh yeah, this came out in 1970, when I was ten years old, and I have the album (Paranoid) and could not guess how many times I have listened to it. You seem to really appreciate 'significant' songs, where the message is usually a protest against some injustice or another. Therefore, I have a request. Could you please do a brief check on what happened at Kent State University on May 4th, 1970, and then listen to the song Neil Young wrote when he heard the news over the radio. Story goes, he grabbed his guitar, took a walk in the woods for a couple of hours, came back, called up the guys in the band and told them to book a studio right away, he had a song they had to do. It came out very soon after, and it is called Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Please take a listen, and try not to let your blood boil.

    1970, I'm 12 years old. The teachers tell us all to watch the nightly news to see the tally of Americans killed and wounded in 'Nam then write reports for class. My brother is in the Marines, thankfully not in combat duty, but he knows so many friends that are. We pray constantly that he won't be sent into the war.
    My prepubescent mind is not ready for this song, I haven't even started smoking weed yet. Then somebody plays it at a party and I completely lose it. Thinking of all those guys just a few years older than me that get a letter in the mail, then just a matter of weeks later find themselves walking through a steaming jungle with a rifle, waiting for a bullet out of the trees.
    It was hard to listen to for a long time after that, but I grew to love it for the power and truth. Also the amazing bass and drums. I've never seen Ozzy live, but I really need to set that aside as a priority. Neither of us is getting any younger.
