The average modern golf driver is 45 inches of titanium. The average Move controller is eight inches of mostly plastic. In the ideal world you wouldn't have to be hit in the face by either of these instruments, but if the revival of Craig David's musical career teaches us anything, it's that the world in which we live is far from ideal.
So if you had to choose, you'd rather not be whacked in the mush with a full-sized, full-weight golf club being swung around your living room at head height. And yet here we are, with the Universal Virtual Golf Set for PlayStation Move and Nintendo Wii from CTA Digital.
Assuming your living room isn't the size of a driving range, you're going to run the serious risk of clobbering someone in the kisser as they walk uncautiously nearby.

Safety labels in the US have nothing todo with consumer protection. They have everything todo with keeping the manufacturer safe from lawsuits.

You know, one of the points I always make against video game inspired killing sprees - or just too much realism in games - is "It's just a game. When I shoot someone dead in game, he doesn't actually die, he doesn't get hurt at all!"

I read about this one where they took blood every time you got shot, I thought for sure we'd see Jane saying "If you've ever thought to yourself wouldn't this first person shooter be more fun if I bled every time I got shot ..."
Lol yea I remember that, was supposed to make is easier to donate blood for people who don't like needles or something alone those lines... I can't imagine how it would help haha.

I can honestly see these vest one being used as training for people like security guards. Just so they learn how to take a hit in the armored part, because that's actually really tricky.

My dad ended up taking down a lighting fixture in our living room due to playing Kinect Sports, I think the Kinect in general was an accident waiting to happen

The Wii. So many busted TVs, so many injuries. About died laughing when my ex's little brother walked right into a WiiSports bowling swing. Caught it right in the face. To his credit it only happened once.
I have banged my hand into the ceiling fan playing Dance Central more times than I care to admit.
Oh yeah, I broke a CFL playing Kinect Adventures' rafting game once, and that was without the raft! (And it didn't seem to work as well with Child of Eden as one might hope, so it's been disconnected for a while now.)
I had a Virtual Boy when I was a preteen. It was bad about eating batteries, but it was surprisingly fun! We just propped it up with books or played it laying down in bed. The pinball game was honestly my favourite (it even got my dad to play!). The lack of blue light was a plus.
3:40 I remember a "toy" that was basically a Laser Tag system, but the guns had metal plates in the grips that gave you an electrical shock every time you got shot. Great fun... for about ten minutes or until the very first time you got shot, at which point you discovered that your "friends" had cranked up the power on your gun as high as it would go *because of course it was adjustable*
Luke and Ellen are such a great addition to the family. The fun bunch just got more fun.... and bunchier. :D
Wait so creating a vest that every time you get stabbed in a game it stabs you in real life is a bad idea well I guess I'll stick with the chair that any time you get fall damage in game it breaks your legs
It's not *that* bad. A quick Google search suggests that the pressure from bullets would be at least a hundred times greater than what the vest applies for bullet wounds. So if you got stabbed, it would poke you, and an analogous chair would just smack you in the shins when you died from falling damage.
actually for that joke the chair would be like getting a sledgehammer to the knees and the vest, (knife) great for torture not so good for games

You're not far off; placement of the pads is actually crucial to their functioning. My wife has a TNS unit she got from her dad and it has a bevy of warnings about improper placement of the pads leading to physical injury.
There are a variety of physiological factors that go into something like that - thickness and resistance of skin, density of muscles in the area, and so on.
Virtual Boy wasn't a peripheral. It was a full system.
That removed your peripheral vision when in use. I think. I don't really know because I've never played it.

'simple' is not the kindest word, I'd say 'perfect' fits the design much better. There's a reason it has been adapted so many times afterall.
SpydersByte ehhhhh the PlayStation controller port leaves a bit to be desired and the entire setup was prone to interference thus the hefty ferrite bead on the end. I'll meet you halfway and call the whole thing "Elegantly designed". It certainly wasn't the cluster fsck the N64 controller was.

Years ago, I worked in a Gamestation store and we had the earlier version rumble vest in the back store room until we turned into Blockbuster and the store went out of business. So technically, on sale for about seven years. However, we had a T-100 controller that lit up for about the same amount of time too... ah, good times.
@outsidexbox, you should have mentioned the Steel Battalion controller too. Eject in time or its game over? Yes, that was a thing.
Loved the clips from Bad Influence, it was One of the few places to see games on TV in the nineties. I can totally imagine Andy living in a shed dealing cheat codes like Nam Rood.
Mario's Tennis for virtual boy was actually quite relaxing to play. Since the game took place "at night" it had an almost surreal dreamscape quality. The main issue was (at least for me) was that because you had to have your face in the console, you were constantly smelling your own face.

I wanted to see you guys try some of these. There was a speaker vest one that was used to help people with hearing difficulties hear things by vibration.
I'm having a Deja-Vu with some of these. Many gaming channels are doing similar videos nowadays but hey the Oxbox team does it better.
It's not a peripheral but I still think the Wii remotes were more dangerous than all of these combined. I can't begin to imagine how many people were hit in the face and how many TVs were broken by them.

I saw the videos for that device but never understood why anyone would think it was a good idea. Even for blood donation charities, it would likely take blood too slowly for the blood bag to fill enough for the preservatives to kick in to keep the blood viable for actual use.
You were meant to play bloodborne in a dark room, alone, while using a guitar hero controller.

We have the Tony Hawk skateboard in my house, but I don't think we've ever used it for anything other than standing on and wiggling around, or trying to see how many times we can spin while standing on it. I remember using it for that candle game in Wii Fit Plus...
