      In the US (idk about elsewhere) you can opt to decline an inheritance if the debts are greater than the assets. So you can avoid being made poorer simply by inheriting money. Of course this means that if say your parents go into extreme debt you may inherit little to nothing from them, as their estate will be siezed by their creditors. But you can't actually become a debtor by this process directly.

  • @bioniclelegend7
    @bioniclelegend7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +227

    I have to say fair play, you managed your money extremely well and bought your own house. I do find it funny at how bad the housing situations are, even here where I am in Ireland (I find it hilarious that our government announced that about 1000 new homes were built last year which is fuck all for an entire country), that if you asked what my dream currently is, it's literally just have a house. Doesn't need to be a mansion, doesn't need to be large estate, just a roof I can call my own. Fair play getting out of the renting market and now knowing that no matter how the economy, goes, at least you will have place you can stay and don't have to worry about getting evicted like I have seen with my friends or my brother who has been jumping from places to place becuase either the landlord has sold the house, roomates are terrible or rent got too expensive. You have done better than most of the young generation so hopefully your financial situations stays good.
    Also, I do find it funny that you bought bitcoin for a joke back in the early days as I thought about the same but didn't. I thought I would be a buy a few for fun but decided not to. I don't feel bad about it all as it was impossible to expect it to get to current levels and as you said, if I did, I so would have sold out back when it had reached about 1K thinking I would have made crazy profits not knowing it was going to hits 10s of thousands. I think another example of crazy value is csgo skins. There is some guy who has loads of kato 2014 stickers and still hasn't sold. The inventory he has is worth hundreds of thousands and yet he still won't sell (I think it's because he just really likes them). My point wtih this is just I just think tis the same wtih bit coin. Back when the stickers came out, they were cents. Then as time went most people probably sold out when they doubled or tripled in value, not realising how expensive they would get today. TBH these examples have made really curious in always wondering what will be the next thing that I will see, that will sky rocket in value to levels I could never dream of as it always cool to see it happen.

    11:05 aaah I feel you. Buying a house completely confused my perception of money. Suddenly, I discussed casually an increase of 20K while I would do extra-research and efforts to spare 20 euros on a computer part. It felt so absurd. Also the fact that considering the amounts that are involved, you have so little information on what you are buying... • @innocuousbonobo
      @innocuousbonobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exremely bleak is an understatement, luckily, most of the renting in my country is not done by landlords but by semi-governmental organizations which sort of keep the price in check (still around 1100-1300 euro's) except for student housing, that's an unmonitored market filled with scummy landlords which charge about 400 to 600 euro's of rent for about 9 square meters.
      A lot of the older people and the government don't seem to understand that it is almost impossible for a student to pay for college, books, study and work enough at the same time to afford rent and basic needs forcing them into big debts (which had a rate of 0% interest but they announced will go up to around 5% depending on the economic state at the end of this year, oh and also this debt is prohibiting you from taking out a mortgage until you have paid it off fully). I could go on an entire rant on how this is making higher education very exclusive again but I'll spare you the details.
      In conclusion, together with the rising housing market I don't see myself buying a house in the next 15 to 20 years just because I and my generation cannot afford it.
      TLDR; if you study you won't be able to buy a house probably until you are about 40.

    The "housing crisis" isn't a crisis; it is intentional. At ~20k per person, it would cost 34 billion to end renting. The UK earns over 500 billion per year (based on tax rev from 2019).
    As for where I got 20k from? An educated guess based on the construction methods and associated costs of pre-fabricated concrete housing, which has proven to be among the most affordable long-term housing solutions.
    Please note that this estimate does not account for the costs of land, corruption, incompetence, or maintenance costs.
    Nor does it account for increased tax revenue and GPD that would inevitably occur due to the improved working and housing conditions.

    • @JavonAnonimni
      @JavonAnonimni 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Housing crisis is the result of changed behavior - young people want to live alone more often than they used to and they want to live in a big enough town (our parents built the small towns, now we are leaving them, going for larger towns). On the other hand local government (and sometimes state/federal) is either intentionally or because of over regulation not marking land suitable for building and selling it. This is because the mayor wants a cut on each property sold (certainly the case in my country) or some over regulation / action by special interest group (ecological or nimbys) stop government's plans to build. Either way both this reasons lead to backlogged demand, that won't be solved for a long time. The tax revenue can be safely assumed that it would translate to other more productive means of spending and taxation, so the government wouldn't lose anything most likely.

Your discomfort or guilt is understandable, because I think most people have ingrained that the economy is some pure meritocracy even if they nominally understand that to be a myth. Congrats Philip!! Silent long-time fan here.
    In Australia we have a housing crisis of our own. In my area of Western Sydney, the median house price is A$1.6M (€900,000) and is still 1-1.5hrs from the CBD, where the majority of well-paying jobs are. Stamp duty still applies to everyone.
    As a single young adult, my choices are to jump on the rent treadmill for life, find a dozen roommates or live with parents for as long as possible. I'm fortunate enough to have the latter option. However it is crushing for independence and doesn't help bring that sense of adulthood and the freedom to create a new identity separate from who you are in your family's eyes.

    When I first heard of someone buying a pizza with some bitcoins I actually downloaded a miner and tried to configurate it. But I was too young to know why it didnt work. It ran but didnt mine anything. So I got rid of it.
    Now when I think back I feel horrible. I could have helped my family, which is in a horrible financial state and still helps me financially. I would have given everything back.
    But just like you said. It could have been that I probably would have sold it already when it doubled or tripled.
    The only thing that still makes me sick is, that I also could have forgotten my wallet from back then until now. I was young and saved everything on my HDDs. Maybe I only would have sold the bitcoins when they would be mentioned in the news.

    I can kind of, sort of relate to feeling like the money you got wasn't earned.
    A while back my map reskin for TF2 I made mostly as a hobby was added to the game. It would have been all well and good but the map itself was a buggy and unoptimised, as if it wasn't tested at all. In a later update, Valve added a map that was even more broken and weird, which kinda confirmed my theories. All of my relatives, who don't understand anything about gaming told me that I should be proud that I've earned the money Valve pays to contributors with my hard work and dedication, but I still feel like I simply won at a casino. It doesn't feel like my map was added because it was good, it's like it was just added to fill in a spot.
    I realize that all of this just might be me overthinking it all, having low self esteem or thinking that my work isn't good enough or whatever else, but I genuinely can't get rid of this feeling and I didn't want the game I love to stoop down to accepting subpar maps to be added.

    Yup, it's pretty much all the same everywhere in the developed world for our generation. Lately I often argue with my father about these things. (I too am millennial)
    It's always "Oh your generation has it so easy now", "when are you going to get a mortgage and start a family?"
    In these times? I personally make at least double of the average income in my country and I just can't imagine trying to build anything... I have saved almost 8-9 months of salary by now - but that's just enough to let me live stress-free and buy pretty much anything/anytime I want (my living costs are pretty low and hobbies pretty cheap - I don't drink/smoke/do drugs, so that's a big money-saver as well), but it's still by far not enough to even get me on a track of being a homeowner.

      I knew it would cost me my nerves to play the "I should have sold/bought at that time" game - So I never got in.
      I was one of those kids that back in ~2010 downloaded some basic CPU miner, ran it for couple of minutes/hours on Core duo CPU, probably made hundreds / thousands $ in "todays worth" - laughed it off "what a bullshit" and then uninstalled it.

Funny enough 20 years ago, his income was double of what he makes now (noone wants offset printed stuff in todays digital era - margin for that used to be a goldmine). He just flushed obnoxious sums of money down the drain back then.
      The realty market in my country is completely busted. The average income is probably ~ 1/3 of the income in the west (compared to Germany/UK), yet a semi-detached house in a town (lets say around 20-40 thousand people) goes for around £200-300k. Detached house in a 100k city goes for over a £500k.

    I'm in the house-hunting phase myself right now. Been living with my parents since finishing Uni, which has allowed me to save the vast majority of my income to the point I have enough for a decent deposit. Annoyingly though, as you say, the house prices here are the highest they've been and I have not won the lottery. Talking to my parents about it all really cemented in me that a lot of people don't realise how bad the market is. My dad suggested I could just get a bungalow near where my grandad lives, as if that would somehow mean it would be affordable. The cheapest in the area being listed at 220k and missing EVERYTHING (Nothing at all but an old falling apart bathroom. It'd been completely stripped out). Showing my parents just how much my mortgage would be a month on even the cheapest of houses around my city had them completely shocked. There are a few nice looking, good location and affordable ones in the area that I've found, but I really don't know if I want or even can afford to take the plunge. I keep telling myself "what if the market crashes in a week?". I'd be kicking myself for the rest of my life if that happened.
    I've told myself that I'd never rent a polace unless utterly necessary. As you say, rent is just throwing money away. I know people who do spend more per month on rent than some martgages would cost me. Granted some may include bills or council tax, but at least with a mortgage, the money is actually going towards you owning the place and allowing you to sell it. Renting is the housing equivalent of a hotel; you're not in control, it's expensive, and at the end of the day, the owner has the final say. I'm sure for some people renting might be the better option, but with how many paces there are up for rent, they're massively hurting the housing market by reducing supply.

    • @Francoberry
      @Francoberry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kliksphilip fair enough on that front, but house prices have always gained value over time. Objectively there are more and more people in the UK, less and less houses and no clear solution or response to increase supply and reduce demand. It’s extremely unlikely your property will ever depreciate, at least not in the period of time you’d generally stay in a purchased home.
      Just seemed odd phrasing to suggest spending money on buying property leaves you with ‘nothing’ as you said. It may not be a liquid asset, but it’s a tangible and far less risk-intensive asset, where the same can’t be said for Bitcoin. It’s objectively not nothing, and objectively not a depreciating asset.

Someone listed their house wrong and I was the only one to look at it. Offered low and somehow got it. If that didn't happen... Not sure I'd still be here.

      Without your house you'd have killed yourself?

    If you think UK's housing prices are bad. Just look at Australia, we're fucked. Median price for a few months in Melbourne and Sydney was well over $1 Million AUD. Although house prices have gone down, there still ludicrously expensive and unaffordable.

    this is what old people will never understand. my nan saved some money for an extra year and sold a pokey little flat and the house she bought with that money is now worth half a million pounds, in an area that isn't considered even that nice. for me to buy even a 2 bedroom terraced house on a busy main road I'd have to either get married or earn 60k a year. it's impossible to thrive as a young person
