I personally like their music because its different. Her voice, the beat and that familiar buzz that gives me shivers. But some of her songs sound almost the same-
I think music producers don't get enough recognition in the current music industry, it's heartwarming to see someone like Charles appreciating Finneas' phenomenal work.

I think the first song of Billie’s I ever heard was “When the Party’s Over”, and I remember being completely captivated by her brilliant use of SILENCE. She and and Finneas are not afraid to have calculated moments of silence in their music, and I think it adds such a gravity to the songs, if that makes sense. It’s like it puts you in suspense!! Totally agree with you, they’re on another level of talent.
That's true and such a good point. It's something you really don't find in pop music at all, but the way they use silence is so arresting and captivating.

Yess. It is very stripped back, basically just vocals, piano and sub bass, but it builds up so effortlessly to the bridge. Most ‘emotional’ songs have a strained belting sound to convey sadness/pain(e.g. someone you loved😂) but Billie proves it is just as possible to put emotion into softer vocals. The 3/4 time signature gives a kind of unsettled, almost rushed feel to the chorus. The harmonies are amazing. It blows me away every time.

The first time I heard of Billie she opened for a friend of mine in the small room at the Observatory in Southern California. She was only 15 and her and her brother played a super stripped out set and absolutely killed it. Blew my friend’s band out of the water 😅. Ever since that she blew up and I have been in awe ever since

I think what Billie has vocally is soul. You can't sing the way she does in this song without being completely into it. She puts her voice into a place where she's on the edge of losing it. And that is what is so powerful. And this is live folks.

I’m 40 music teacher .. and I said the same years ago about Billie’s voice with her jazzy ethereal haunting voice … so WHAT??! No one today or in the last decade does this … no one has THIS voice… totally connect with music and emotional intelligence. Honestly, the chord progression of "my future" reminds me of watching Peanuts movies as a kid. It doesn't sound sad, happy, or bittersweet. It just sounds like life.
Literally I was thinking the exact same thing as he was working out the chord progression. It, ironically enough, sent me mentally back in time to being a kid watching Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. Specifically the “O Christmas Tree” cover that was used during the quiet, contemplative moments. I think the best word to describe the mood that My Future and the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s O Christmas Tree cover is “introspective.” It’s an inherently neutral word, not positive or negative, but it has so much meaning and emotion behind it.

I am an unapologetic fan of Billie Eilish. Her music speaks to me in a way that no other pop artist ever has. She and her brother are a breath of fresh air in a long stagnant pop music scene.

I feel like a lot of people tend to overlook the emotions and effort Billie and Finneas does in their music. Their songs are always and will be so raw and personal. Listening to their songs are somewhat intimate. It feels like it’s just you and them. That’s what makes their songs so special.
My personal favorite bond theme song is writings on the wall, but no time to die is a close second, never really liked Skyfall. And love singing no time to die, cause it’s so easy to sing, but writings on the wall is so hard, mainly cause it’s so high, but itks a great way to train your male head voice, although you should always start with the intro to “the lion sleeps tonight”, and then go to something like into the unknown, cause writings on the wall is just a master class in head voice, especially if your tenor isn’t the biggest range to begin with,
I personally believe that Billie and Finneas will be remembered as two of the most talented and accomplished artists in history. They are 23 and 19 and have already conquered the world with their music. Imagine what they will have accomplished in 10-15 years.

I didn't used to be that way. It took a lot of learning to appreciate things for what they are and not what I think they should be. I used be a stereotypical jazz elitist. Now, having developed a love for so many different genres, I can confidently say, music is so much more enjoyable when you don't care where it comes from or what it's trying to be. When you just find what speaks to you.
@@CharlesCornellStudios This is honestly very inspiring and a hard thing to do. I have been playing guitar for about 8 years now and I'm 16, and only have started learning music theory a year ago. Each time I want to play with someone who has learned music theory more time than me, he takes it as the obvious that I probably know what you're supposed to know after you learned music theory, and that sucks. Besides, they aren't even open to any genre and as I know them they probably won't open to new ones, because as you said they are stereotypical jazz/rock elitists. So I'm betting very much, that none of the people I know who are like I just described can do the same as you did. The way you grew out of yourself is very not obvious and I understand that and appreciate you for that, and that's one of the reasons I love watching your vids and see you laugh and enjoy from songs you review or just talk about them. :DD

I think that the "relaxed and playful" style you're describing with her harmonies at the forefront feels very choral. Billie loved singing in a choir, as as someone who has been in a lot of choirs, that's what I like the most about her singing. When you have a good group who all knows their parts well, it is relaxed, playful, and deeply satisfying to sing - and just as satisfying to listen to!

the two words I'd use for the production are precise and intimate (although vocal style has a lot to do with the second too)
This brother/sister combo are a much needed blessing in the music industry. Her lyrics and demand for vocal perfection (as she hears it) combined with his creative ear and writing style are a wonderful combination. Don't trash them unless you listen to them in headphones and then check out some of her television interviews. She's still a teenager yet is wise beyond her years.

I've watched most of her television interviews and when you listen to her you see that she is more mature than her 17 years, and certainly more intelligent than her image would suggest. She is humble, her lyrics are deep, not shallow, and she sees the big picture. Check out her interview with Ellen Degenerese for one example. Remember, she's still a kid. :)

And it is rarely, if ever mentioned, the focus on her breathing. If you listen as a singer, to my future and no time to die, you find yourself thinking 'Breathe Billy!' But she pushes through extended phrases and maintains the control and pitch as well as the dynamic. Kudos to you Charles. Thank you for your talent and production work.

Oh I knowww, Billie's breath support is amazing! Her sort of "whisper singing" is traditionally frowned upon because it doesn't maximize all of the air you inhale - the whispery sound is from all the extra air escaping between the vocal folds without being turned into sound. But to be able to sing entire songs that way, with such precision and control demonstrates that her air management is completely stellar, and when she wants to go full voice and belt, she can! As someone with horrible breath control, she's an inspiration 😆

I'm a classical pianist and Billie Eillish is one of the few pop singers that I put on repeat. I enjoy the composition and her terribly good voice. But some of my colleagues don't see the appeal and think she is just another pop singer.

I Don't think that this music is supposed to be talked about because this is commercial not art music and there are many more artists who are not commercial and who make real art.
I'm a 35 year old man, and I think her music is great. It's clear she and her brother are a team, and I really appreciate it. I like that she uses things that feel traditional but still challenges the space.
I'm a jazz/classical musician that doesn't have any hate for pop, but it's definitely hard for me to find "pop" that finds its way into my on repeat Playlist, but Billie was the first new artist in years that I listened to and immediately fell in love with. It's unique and amazing while having replay value that a lot of music doesn't. Charlie Puth has found his way there too because of your other videos. Thanks for helping people appreciate these amazing artists!
Her singing is old fashioned cabaret singing with all the longing and desire in her voice. Amazing voice and talent worth following.

Before, whenever I thought of Billie Eilish, I just thought of Bad Guy and just rolled my eyes and didn't understand the appeal of her mumbled soft singing. Then by chance I just happened to be suggested Billie's NPR Tiny Desk concert here on TH-cam. And that's where I first heard My Future. And I was blown away! The chord progression of that song is EVERYTHING I love in a chord progression! I felt like "someone literally put all my favorite chord progressions into one song!" And so that got me to listening to some of her other stuff. While I can't say I listen to her all the time, I DEFINITELY appreciate her artistry and musicality, as well as Phineas'.

Honestly, I hate when people say that since Bad Guy is Billie's most popular song that it must be her best. That's just so unfair, because she has so many other ones that are extremely unappreciated. I honestly don't even like Bad Guy because it's been way too overplayed lol

I’m so glad you liked No Time To Die, because everyone else I’ve seen has been like “it’s so cheesy!” But it’s such a nod to the Bond Legacy, especially in regard to the music 🥺
It feels like a farewell note to the current Bond era, which is prob why they made the vibe remind you of Skyfall, which was like the peak of Bond music during the said era.
It's also worth mentioning, the amount of versatility these two have. "Therefore I Am", with the simple but infectious groove, the strings, the harmonic minor scale, and the bravado in the vocals sounds like it could fit snugly in a Britney Spears record.
Meanwhile, tracks like "All The Good Girls Go To Hell" and "You Should See Me In A Crown" take influence from different shades of Funk and Industrial Hip Hop.
In conjunction with the Jazz and Chamber Pop influences you mentioned, these Siblings know their stuff and I've always loved their music😊

I think the fact that they grew up listening to so many different styles and genres is one of the keys to how they kind of came up with their own. Billie said one of her favorite songs ever is by Frank Sinatra, and was also in Peggy Lee 100 years celebration talking about how she was obsessed with her when she was younger. She was/is a huge Justin Bieber fan. One of her favorite artists is Tyler the Creator, and she really likes rap in general... If you take a look at the playlists from her short podcast "me & dad radio", you'll see what I mean.

Finneas is a genius composer, and Billie knows how to bring out the emotion in her brother's compositions. That's why it works. (although as a trained Vocalist her singing style STILL DRIVES ME NUTS)

@@davidannderson9796 She's nothing special vocally, really. She's not complex at all. If you get to always sing like this, it's only natural that you develop this part of your voice. Mastering both this soft breathy voice and the strong voice and everything in-between is what's truly remarkable. She's talented, has nice control on what she does, but has very limited tools to work with. Overall she lacks dynamics and her options are very limited. Not to mention the importance of a good mic to pick up what she does (I don't follow her, so I'm not sure if she's has no mic random singing videos to see how her voice sounds like naturally and how loud it is).

@@davidannderson9796 I partially agree about the emotional expression. I don't fully agree, because listeners can be quite subjective in the emotional perception. Just like the original comment said. She brings out emotion so as to be relatable for the listeners, and it works with this era and musical trends. But the singing itself is not something exceptional. Also, there are plenty of singers that didn't make it in the industry, some haven't even tried to, social media is full of them. So we can't be sure that only Billie Holiday and Billie Eilish are the only ones capable of doing this.
I don't want to argue either. I'm just thinking that we tend to focus on what's popular and heavily promoted because it's relatable, even if it's not necessarily of the highest quality as many people say.
I cried when I first heard My Future. First of all, it's just down right beautiful, and then I was like wait that chord progression, WHOAAAA she's done it, she's made jazz go mainstream!
I've recently become obsessed with "everything I wanted." The lyrics are so deep and the song is just not afraid to really FEEL. I recommend the beautiful, sad, dreamy music video that goes with it too, definitely the best way to listen to it.
I'm a little sad you didn't talk about that song but happy that you went into "my future" because that's my other favorite song of hers at the moment. The song and video gives me some really lovely Steven Universe vibes that made me nostalgic for the show again.

(not so fun) fun fact: e.i.w was written over a year. the depressed suicidal "jumping off of the golden gate" part was written when billie had a nightmare about her dying and nobody caring, and she was going through a hard time. the brotherly love part was written 6 months later when she was in a better place

I was kind of disappointed the first time when I heard this cliched 'This-and-that-and" groove (it's just superficial & poppy), but when she started singing I was like "Man, that is one hell of an earworm!!!". I think they used that groove to keep it simple and easily relatable, and I have pointed it out in my analysis video on 'Therefore I Am'. And the grove goes well with the playful melody!

Same. I'm a fan but when I first heard TIA it just didn't work for me. I didn't really stream it but kept hearing it here and there, and before I even realized what was happening I found myself humming or singing it. Tbh Charles, I’ve been a fan of Billie ever since I heard her music. Then I saw her in interviews, found out that she has Tourette’s Syndrome, and instantly found her relatable. It’s enough to hear her sing, but when she talks people listen for good reason. She’s incredibly well-spoken, and makes damn good music.
Your video was suggested to me, and I'm so glad. You touched on some really good points that I COMPLETELY agree with! I'm an audio engineer and have been completely nerding out over Finneas' approach to production. It's made me so happy to have him genuinely put producers back in the spotlight, and give a younger generation exposure to this side of popular music too! I was somewhat late to the Eilish party and only really started listening in late 2019/ early 2020, but I've honestly become sooo interested in their songs and I love seeing each one broken down because each is honestly unique in the way they are created from concept to finished. The fact that there is so much undeniable talent here, and it's real, makes me so excited to see what more they have and will come up with. They're both so young (and while I'm not thaat much older than Finneas) I still am super impressed with his creativity and skill. He's pretty self taught, and I went to school for audio, but there are things he has achieved in these works that surpass what I might have been taught, because he's not by the book and he's so diy with this method of production he has its a breath of fresh air and I'm I spired to experiment some more myself :)

I really appreciate the chord progressions in Billie's songs. I might not understand the theory behind it but sometimes a chord will just slightly change, and add motion or beg to be resolved and when it is revolved it might be in an unexpected way. I enjoy how her vocals match the music. Sometimes songs back to back become a bit monotonous but overall I enjoy them when I hear

You perfectly articulated how I feel about Billie's sound and the collaborative nature of her relationship with her brother. There is an intimacy between them that is beautiful yet not "wrong." The symbiosis is important but still distinctly different. That allows so much beauty to come out.
She's the first mainstream artist in over a decade that I truly love and was waiting at the door for the release of Happier Than Ever. They're towering talents and I look forward to seeing wherever their career takes them.

The only interesting part was the chords analysis which was... Not that deep (and pretty sure Stevie Wonder already played something like that).

i always love watching these to hear someone gas up my favs but especially them telling me how they’re actually technically good.
I'm just sad that people don't understand that, while they judges Billie's music to be for edgy teenagers, it is authentic and true to the emotions of the artists. It's genuine. That's so rare in pop these days and that, to me, is GREAT music.
Coupled onto what Charles has already said, the tune carrying those "im14andthisisdeep" lyrics is so beautiful and so much thought goes into it. The sound IS deep, and you don't have to be 14 to see that.

There is always such vitriol to things teenagers (especially girls) like. Yeah some stuff going people care about and get into might be cringy when you are older but people fail to realise that when you are young different things are relevant and important to you and different things carry weight. I say give the kids some space to be themselves. (Although some pushback might even be wanted since rebelliousness is so appealing at that age)
Definitely agree with this discussion. I never really listen to newer pop anymore due to the lack of melody or meaningful harmony. I always go back to jazz to get that refreshing feeling of something new and we'll thought out not because I feel it's superior but because I understand the musical choices being made are interesting due to the fleshed out nature of it. When I heard "Everything I Wanted" for the first time I was blown away by the mixing choices as well as the uses of the instruments in the song. The melody had meaning and it all felt real as opposed to manufactured with a pop formula. There are definitely songs in the mainstream I enjoy but Billie and Finneas always put out something that's not only catchy but musically mature and I'm here for it.
Billies music is amazing. People tend to not like it because of her fan base. And we all know people tend to dislike and ridicule anything that teenage girls enjoy.

I had no interest in Billie’s music until a few months ago when I saw her and Finneas do a Tiny Desk at Home and when she sang “my future” it blew my mind. I’ve been hooked ever since, watching videos on them and listening over and over to their stuff. Unreal. I can’t believe I ignored them for so long.
Kinda same here, Tiny Desk changed my perspective of how Billie is actually so blessed with her talent.
And you know how many people are doing the same - ignoring and dismissing her? Imagine being a supervocalist at such a tender age and being constantly called a "whisperer", "she can't sing", "an industry plant", "undeserved Grammies", etc. As she sings in No Time To Die "Life is far away from fair". Also both she and Finneas are amazing lyricists.

First time i listened to her albums i went in not expecting much and then ended up playing both albums on a loop at least 3x each. Was totally blown away!!
The first song I listened of hers was either six feet under or watch. Both got me so captivated by how amazing they were. It was as though she entered my mind and knew exactly what i loved in a song. The vibrato isn’t forced, the harmonies. Literally everyhtinggg. I then started listening to her more. Her don’t smile at me ep, when we all fall asleep where do we go album, some of her unreleased songs such as come out and play!! It’s literally perfection🥺💜
