Think it’s a case of a loose valve seat. The valve opens and the seat follows then interferes with closing properly as the spring has more than just the valve to move.
may be ... but i think that those lash adj. are empty of oil inside so u gonna have a backlash until the oil pump engage and fill it up ... by the way this engine has hydraulic chain guide lifters so ... double the backlash
Michael Miller my 03 durango 4x4 awd does makes a litter noise in the morning until it gets warm or oiled. Maybe 5 mins overnight . Any ideas? Hydraulic lifters?
I really haven't done much with the truck. I use it as a back up/ winter beater now... if u seen the other vids u know it knocks.. im now pretty sure it's a crank bearing... I'll update when something breaks lol
eQuariuz did you soak the lifters and follower in oil before installation? If not they will make noise before they fill up with oil so basically the lifters get hard to press when they are filled with oil but they make no noise because they arent moving alot so theres no tap noise as for the roller/follower it need oil also so that the cam doesnt have friction before the oil lubes it up. Also make sure the port where the lifter is inside is free of debris so you dont have any plugged up holes where the oil shoots out and is supposed to fill your lifter up with oil
eQuariuz technically you dont have to fill them but if you dont fill them they will be springy and will allow a bit of space between the tip of the rocker arm and the tip of the lash adjuster tappet( the top of the lash adjuster) and it can tap really loud until the oil gets inside the lash adjuster and stiffens it up with oil. But if the oil doesnt get inside it fast enough then it can even allow the rocker to possibly fall out since theres alot of play from the lash adjusters not having oil in them and it allows the rocker to move more since it doesnt have the pressure of the adjuster being stiff. If yours sounds like that video maybe it is a rod bearing cause a lash adjuster sounds like a tick that sounds like a heavier knock sound.
Mine is not turning easily by hand after I torqued the cams down. I'm not putting the heads back on the block until I solve this problem. Did anyone find out the cause of this?
stuck valve would have a delay. worn guides would slop. it's got enough play that once it's no longer tension down force. but up. it slaps. it. no way you have more than 2 that have worn lobes. but check for play in chains. gear idler gear. etc
The engine appears overheated (brown deposits) this ruins the valve seats! You need to pull the heads before it becomes catastrophic! Really, don't mess around with additives or voodoo! The up side to blowing the engine is you can put a bigger engine in.
Take the valve cover off and check the lash adjuster tappets make sure they are all tight and filled with oil if they are loose they will make noise they should be hard with very little play
How can we here anything when you’re slamming the handle of the ratchet against the fan!.??

that's when is at most tension. then when it's at over center release. it slaps. check your chain guide and primary chain

It's the camshafts unloading tension b/c chains have slack
I have a tick noise coming from my new set of heads too. Not sure what to do
4.7 clattering. Not oil pump, not a bad rod, not a lifter. It 's the flywheel

I’m curious, did you ever figured it out? I started working on one the other day and noticed the same thing.
Maybe its a catalytic bearing
Bad bearing at rockets????
Not sure yet. Truck is parked and haven't done anything with it.
What was the problem?
now that i really look at it, looks like timming chain letting loose at one spot
I'm a 4x4 mechanic. and we have this alot

warped head
did it only do this on the intake valves?

Bad cam?
Watching the first part where the chain is shown it looks like the whole cam makes almost 3 or 4 degrees of rotation before stopping.
its got me stumped... im not gonna be able to do anymore with it tell spring
i have the same noise from #1 im not sure either i do know itll cost a lot to take it to a shop though
power steering might be low or replace
Valve seat

what bigger engine is straight swap? have 01 grand cherokee with 4.7 low output version
@@cryptic9243 I don't know, but that would be a good question to ask Martin. I'm curious about that too.
Hum?
looks like a bad cam lobe
