    I installed a pair of these Pearly Gates on an Ibanez JS100 which in my opinion had horrific factory pups, the Duncan PG's cured my sound issues. Great clean sound and even dirty they more than hold their own. Highly suggest trying them if you are not totally happy with your factory pups...a game changer in my opinion.

      I put DiMarzio pups in my Ibanez back when I got it because I thought it was the thing to do. Anything is better than their factory pups.
      I'm thinking amount replacing the '57 classics in my LP for a set of Pearly Gates. I'm thinking it will add a bit more character.

      I also have an Ibanez (RG 1121PB-CIF) loaded with Dimarzio Fusion Edge pickups which are pretty good but sounds way too much modern for what I really enjoy to play.
      I think I'm gonna replace them.
      Would you still recommend the Pearly Gates set after 3 years since you posted this comment? 🤔

    • @66THEOSU
      @66THEOSU 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I never really tried any others on my Ibanez, but I am still very happy with the results. I have a 93 USA HSS Strat with a factory Floyd all original and it came with Dimarzio humbucker at the bridge, always thought it was a PAF. The Dimarzio on my Fender always blows me away. Not helping you much I know, I love them both but still lean on that Dimarzio, a beast.

    One of the best pickup demos I’ve ever heard! Clearly showed the full range of tones that these pickups are capable of, and gave clear differences between bridge/middle/neck options. I also loved that there was no talking, only sound. Just the way it should be!

      I put a set of PG’s in an SG a few years back and really wasn’t happy with the result. To my ears, it sounded like the bridge & neck were each part of a different set, they just didn’t seem well matched at all. Anyway, they both came out, and in the end the SG went too; part-ex’d for a Tokai LS116F - much more to my tastes.

    I LOVE the Pearly gates neck pickup. I have one in my Carvin CS6. It's full of tone. I play through a Marshall DSL15 stack. When the gain is set back the notes/chords are big and full. With the gain cranked up a bit it really starts to sizzle. It has a lot of clarity and can really cut through the mix.
    The bridge pickup has a little too much treble for my taste. It does sound great, just not exactly what I want. Thankfully SD has the Saturday Night Special. And it pairs really well with the Pearly Gates.

I wanna change the pickups and I have decided to go with the 59 custom hybrid in the bridge but I am confused about the neck pickup. I have heard a lot of good things about pearly gates for the neck position and I quite like the sentient too. So can anyone help me out. I will use the neck pickups for cleans and smooth solos. • @zmb1982
      @zmb1982 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +flammingcarrot - I used the Pearly Gates for 100% of the sound clips and vignettes. Just two amps were used, a Deluxe Reverb and a Vox AC30. The Vox AC30 was used on the two original pieces I wrote, but the Deluxe Reverb was used for the rest. The ZZ Top riffs were done with the tone rolled down but the treble cranked up on the amp. Thanks for the props to the Meters' "Sissy Strut" at the end. I actually used the Pearly Gates to do the bass line (pitch shifted octave down) and the organ comping for that part... so that little vignette is 100% Pearly Gates (I used a Jazz style bass with SD Vintage Jazz Bass pickups in them for the basslines in the two original songs). FWIW, I used as much spring reverb as I could from the Deluxe Reverb and dialed in as much ambient microphone as I could... still not as ambient as I wanted it, so I added some Softube Spring Reverb plug-in to get that gratuitous springy lushness.

    I have one of these in the neck of my les Paul and I have a Gibson dirty fingers in the bridge. The pearly gates is a fat sound but it’s too smooth for me I think it would be good for classic rock or maybe even jazz/blues it does have that fatness you would love if playing cleanly and if using lower gain like ac/dc, you definitely need a boost pedal to cut through if using in the neck like I am for solos in a high gain situation. It might be a great pick up but definitely not in my guitar with a dirty fingers in the bridge it’s just not hot enough for me. When using this in the studio it got lost in the mix again this doesn’t mean it’s a bad pickup just not for really high gain stuff, if I had the matching bridge pick up it would probably be fine so just don’t use this pick up if ur playing a peavey 6505+ or a mesa dual rec with the gain up.

    Lucky when I bought my used Gibson Les Paul it had SD Pearly Gates already installed. I can get a nice Strat on steroids tone with the neck pickup.

    After much consideration and listening repeatedly to this and the antiquity video back and forth, it looks like this set is what's going to replace the stock pickups in my Bernie. Years ago I bought a shop floor custom PG Bridge model with a Nickel cover. The guitar it was going to go in got severely damaged and a bit later I ended up selling the pick up for some much needed cash at the time, so I never got to use it.

      +jalguitarman That's great news dude! I'm glad you went back and forth between the videos since they were done with the same guitar. The strings are different (nickel silver vs stainless steel) and it's an AC30 vs a JTM45 but the gain levels are extremely similar (JTM45 had a tiny bit more grunt and grit to it) and the recording chain is the same. I found that the big difference is in two areas. 1). The PG set has a pronounced attack that is SUPER crisp and very articulate compared to the slightly clipped attack of the Antiquity. 2) The Ant set has a little more harmonics versus the PG's strong fundamental. Palm muting is going to be accentuated with the PG set while the Ant set will have the harmonic content that screams VINTAGE classic tone. let us know what you think after you get them going!

      BTW the playing is excellent in both videos. Some of the licks at the beginning remind me of licks I have heard in some Steely Dan tunes :-) I use a Golden Cello pedal through a Fender Blues Junior for my distortion tones and it is a very warm sounding pedal so the more articulate top end will be asset in this case I believe.

    A little Wishbone Ash influence in there on the harmonic leads👍
