The important thing to note with this song is this is the first track off Megadeth's 4th album Rust In Peace. The previous 3 albums the band, and Dave Mustaine in particular, were on literally EVERYTHING: Alcohol, Weed, LDS, Heroin, Meth, and even Crack Cocaine. They were just obliterated around the clock for years. This was the first time Megadeth made an album completely clean and sober and had a major line up change by swapping out previous members for the amazing Marty Friedman on guitar and the late, great Nick Menza on drums. But the press and some fans were like "Does Megadeth still have it? Or will they be another band who could only make great music while on drugs?"
The first 10 seconds of this song made the statement that not only did they still have it, but they were just warming up and they haven't stopped since.

Because they play in D standard now. One whole tone lower than E standard. Daves older and troubled vocal chords can actually stay in tune and not snap like you can see after his neck surgery in early 2010s

When Dave Mustaine was the lead guitarist of Metallica in 1982/ '83, he was really not interested in doing lead vocals... But when he was fired and formed Megadeth in late '83, he couldn't find a vocalist in L.A. to match the intensity of his music... so, he just took over on vocals.
Mustaine's style took cues from shock rocker Alice Cooper ( who would later become his godfather) and vocalist Johnny Rotten of UK punk rockers The Sex Pistols... Unlike Metallica, which was a cross between Motorhead and Diamond Head... Megadeth was pristine and technical like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest...

First concert I ever went to was Testament and Megadeth opening for Judas Priest three days before my 18th birthday. Megadeth was touring for this album. It was awesome. Got to see them again in 2010 for the 20th anniversary tour of this album where they played it from start to finish. This is the first song on the album, and at the end of the show they did a reprise of the end of this song from Dave's (vocalist) solo through the end of the song. Hearing the whole album live was special too.

That's also footage of the band sky diving. When Dave first got sober in the early 90s he got into sky diving. The song High Speed Dirt from the album Countdown To Extinction is about it.🤘

Very applicable to current affairs. Right before Dave gives us the first “Holy Wars” line, he says “Don’t look now to Israel, it might be your homeland.”
That region has been the epicenter for holy wars for far too long. It’s not just between Arabic and Israeli groups, but it goes back and includes much older groups like the Byzantine empire and the Persian Sassanid Empire.

One thing to consider when breaking this song down is its a two part song. Part 1 Holy Wars - is about religious conflicts in Northern Ireland and Isreal at the time (1990) and Part 2 ...The Punishment Due - pays homage to the comic book character The Punisher

  • @alistairclifton1286
    @alistairclifton1286 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

2 Songs in one really. Dave said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause" (i.e. the Provisional Irish Republican Army). "The Punishment Due" is based on the Marvel comic book character, the Punisher.

6:31 - Actually it was about the insurgency of the Irish Republican Army force that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland, facilitate Irish reunification, which had conflicts between the Catholics and Protestants. By the time the video came out, it was focused on the Operation Desert Storm, hence the Middle East imagery.

Not religious conflicts in the slightest I'm Irish from Belfast, grew up during the troubles. Outsiders get confused because it's often referred to as Catholic Vs protestant but most people werent religious. Catholic represents the Irish who were oppressed under British rule and the troubles came about as a result of Irish attempts to gain equal rights and status and be allowed to keep Irish culture and tradition and language. Which we did thankfully through non violence (unlike Hamas) after years of ira ceasfire we signed the good Friday agreement and now today over 50% of the population considers themselves Irish and can be Irish citizens and practice our culture (and religion)

"Love thy neighbour as yourself" comes from the old testament and here "neighbour" actually means kinsman so the origins of that saying is rooted in something just as tribalistic as holy wars. It meant that those of god's chosen people should not fight amongst themselves. Meanwhile other passages from the same text talks about chasing other people out of the holy land and how to treat slaves taken from them etc

I had already listened to this song several times and I understand that the theme behind it is a very heavy theme Rachael but honestly there is something you said in the middle of the react video that honestly people really don't respect and I already understood this a long time ago ''love your neighbor as yourself'' is actually a good value to follow but honestly today people have little or no respect for each other's beliefs, but the message of the song is very clear and I really like her riffs and Dave Mustaine's voice is a very good voice and so is the song itself, now talking about recommendations I recommend Laura Braingan - Self Control, it's a good song and I think you'll like it and what's more That's it, continue with the work you're doing and greetings from Brazil to you Rachael! 💚💛💚💛

In 1988, while Megadeth was touring Europe they played in Dublin Ireland. They didn't know about the war/conflict with UK and Ireland about religion. Hence, don't look now to Isreal. It might be your homeland. Holy wars happen everywhere

You should do Hangar 18 next, and then Take No Prisoners, then do Five Magics, and Poison Was the Cure after that. You should also do Lucretia after that, and then Tornado of Souls, and Dawn Patrol after that. You could finish with Rust in Peace....Polaris. But it's just a suggestion.

Metal, Especially 80's, 90's metal had always been a forefront for great lyrics because they were upfront in what was happening. Not much has changed, Sad.

Hello. This is a great song, I think "Hangar 18" will grab you more.
Anyway, Could you please react to the band Death? Either the song "Pull the Plug" or "Left to Die".
Death is a band that helped birth and shape a new metal genre (death metal) after thrash metal (Metallica, Megadeth). The band leader was a great musician and composer, I think you might find them interesting and different.

The skydiving part of the video doesn't have anything to do with anything, Dave was just really into that at the time and stuck it in the video.

I agree with you 100% on war. It's pathetic imo that we as humans kill each other over land and material goods or anything else. I understand self defence but it's pathetic and sad to me that we can't live in peace worldwide. People can call me a hippy or whatever else they want. All i know is I'm on the side of love and compassion.

Great Megadeth songs to react to.
    Trust
    Blood of echoes
    A secret place
    Almost honest
    Ashes in your mouth
    Symphony of destruction
    Countdown to extinction
