Jason Newstead was their bassist at the time and he was epic. He was a great bassist and a tremendous addition to their vocals. Also getting 1.6M people to scream "Die" as a backing vocal performance is absolutely insane. Also this was Biblical, so you are correct on that assumption.

They wrote Creeping Death after watching The 10 Commandments with Charleton Heston. Even if you are not Christian, it's a great movie and still holds up very well. The song is about the angel of death shown as a creeping mist that is sent to kill the first born child of the pharaoh. You can also watch The Prince of Egypt, it's an animated musical that covers the same story. With an absolutely amazing soundtrack.

Metallica was inspired for the song by the second half of the film The Ten Commandments, which is based on the Bible tale of the Plagues of Egypt. While watching the scene of the final plague killing every Egyptian first-born child, Cliff Burton remarked "Whoa - it's like creeping death", as the plague was represented by a fog rolling into the Pharaoh's palace. The band liked the sound of "creeping death" and decided to write a song about the plagues, with the phrase as its title.

James’ vocal power especially from like 88-91 was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately it wasn’t the most healthy for him since he wasn’t never trained which is why he blew out his vocal cords after the black album tour and had to get singing lessons and change how he sang to protect his voice after that. His voice has never quite been the same ever since. And now he’s just a lot older so he just doesn’t have the same range anymore even if he wanted to. But man what I’d give to hear him signing like that live again just one more time

The meaning of the song is best summed up by the description on Wikipedia "The song is told from the perspective of the "Destroyer", the Angel of Death sent by God during the Tenth Plague of Egypt. Moses, through his older brother Aaron, insisted he was sent by God and repeatedly demanded that Pharaoh should set the Hebrew slaves free from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. For the previous 400 years, the Hebrew people had lived as slaves in the Land of Goshen within Egypt. To punish Pharaoh for his obstinacy, God set ten plagues upon Egypt"
This gives a good feeling for how big this concert was, but sadly the audio is horrible.

    • @alexthorpe6583

And in the movie ‘The Ten Commandments’, the Angel of Death was portrayed as a dark shadow, creeping along the ground. Which it seems the band had just watched before writing the song.

It's an abridged version of the Jewish holiday and story of Passover with "Creeping Death" being the 10th plague beset upon Egypt because after 9 previous asks to release the Hebrew slaves, the pharaoh flat out refused. So the tenth plague was the killing of the first born sons of Egypt.
Truth. This is how I start my Passover Seder every single year!
I strongly suggest watching the movie The Ten Commandments (1956).

What Kirk was doing with the guitar when he lifted it and walked to the amp was creating the squealing sound you were hearing….it’s called feedback.

At that point Metallica (atleast Lars and James) had been a band for almost ten years. They were THE metal band and had been for quite a while even though they had only gotten actual radio play for the previous two years, since they made the video for "One" and then released the black album (enter sandman). Prior to that they didn't get radio play because most of their songs were 8+ minutes long, and they wouldn't shorten them. They were making a living playing live as the biggest band with no radio play so their live game was top notch. In middle school we had to order their shirts out of the back of magazines (4-6 weeks shipping), and hand drew their logo and album covers on the back of jean jackets. I was in high school back when this concert happened and they were on top of the world because they finally had that cross over success bringing in the big bucks.

Creeping Death is about the origins of Passover. It's when the Angel Of Death was looming over Egypt and killing every first born and avoiding the homes that have lambs blood painted on the doors.

    Greetings Fellow Canadian!
What's interesting. I saw Metallica in Quebec city in 1992, I think. It was 1992 or 1993. With Suicidal Tendencies (Rob's former band) and Danzig. You should really check out Suicidal Tendencies (You can't Bring Me Down), among their other offerings. Danzig as well (How the God's Kill, Mother). Just a suggestion.

I was around when this came out and in the 1980s, in the US, this was just music. Heavy metal, Slayer was alittle more extreme, Guns n Roses alittle less extreme. Honestly the way you react to this, I don't know if I should even turn you on to the death metal of the mid to late 1990s. It might be more than you can handle. To be fair though, the Christian metal of the early 1990s was more than I could handle. Yeah, I lost my friggin mind on God rock. Way too intense for me.

Its about the Exodus story in the Bible. You were correct when you said that wasnt Robert. Metallica has had 3 bass players. The first was Cliff Burton who was in the band when this song was written. 2nd was Jason. Who took over after Cliffs tragic death and who you saw in this video. Robert is their current bassist who has been with the band for 20 years now. I grew up with bands like metallica and i love it when i see the younger generations enjoy their music. They were/are one of the greatest bands ever.

Robert wasn't in the band yet. Cliff Burton was the best bassist they've ever had (Robert is very close). But cliff died in a bus crash while on tour. You're seeing Jason as the basis here who replaced cliff. Jason left the band after being bullied by the band after too long. The band missed cliff and Jason wasn't cliff. Jason kind of got a raw deal trying to fill cliffs shoes.

This album was dropped in 1984 and I've been listening to this non-stop this past 2 weeks in 2024, legendary work. I love seeing other people reactions to this organized madness. Full of aggression energy packed into some chords.
BTW The song is about the story in Exodus, where God cursed Egypt with the plague for unfairly treatment to the Israelites (400 years of slavery). Some reference from the lyrics-- Land of Goshen, Bush of Fire speaking to Moses, 3 days of darkness, plague, blood in the Nile river, killing the first born of the pharaoh if they dont conform to the passover (foreshadowing lamb that is to come in the new testament, Jesus Christ). Mind-blowing song, the music itself represents the plague of death that is creeping onto the land of the slave masters. Also See the movie Exodus - God and Kings which goes really well with this song
