- I’m the Rules Girl and this is Wayfinders a route building, set collection game for 2-4 players.
In Wayfinders, players take off into the skies and outfit their planes with the right gear to travel to exotic islands and build airstrips.
You win by having the most points at the end of the game, earned by building airstrips on islands and taking advantage of unique scoring effects.

What does the scoring effect mean for the separate group islands tile?
It says "Worth the points listed on the tile for each separate group of islands where you have 1 or more Airstrips at the end of the game. (Two groups of islands are considered "separate" if none of the islands in one group are orthogonally adjacent to any island in the other group.)
Can a group consist of only one island where you have an airstrip or does a group mean 2 or more islands where each island has one of your airstrips?
Do groups need to be diagonally touching each other?
When any group exists in the same row as another group even if they are not touching each other then they do not qualify for a score.
When you have a group of 2 or more islands you only score a value of 3 for that group.
Each separate group will earn a value of 3.
This rule could have had some pictorial examples. Imagine 10 airstrips scattered through out the playing area and the combinations that could qualify or be disqualified by this rule.
Can anyone tell me what the rule means for Scoring Effect card with the rainbow mountain? It says
"Worth the points listed on the tile for each different color of island where you have 1 or more Airstrips at the end of the game. (Do not count the Home Island.)"
There is only one of these island tiles and the color in the bottom left corner is green.
Why does the description make reference to any island where you have 1 or more airstrips? You can only put one of your airstrips on any island. It is almost like the rule was written before it was decided that a player can only have one airstrip on an island...if that was ever the case.
Every island has a color so does that mean all the islands where you have an airstrip? The color is not important.
Does it mean one island of each color? If so what if you have two islands of the same color with airstrips, do you count both? Or do you count the one with the highest value?
Do you need to have airstrips on all 5 different colors islands?
Some examples would be helpful.
An excellent engaging animated overview of the game. Worth watching by anyone wanting a basic understanding or before playing for the first time.
It would be worth mentioning the that there are three different types of island effects instead of just referencing scoring effects when showing the top right corner of the island card. ie. Resource, Scoring and Permanent effects.
I would recommend not using the Scoring effect tiles when first playing the game. We found the instructions unclear on how some of the end of game scoring effects work. The game instructions could do with some examples as I found that our players had different interpretations of how they worked. At the time of writing this I still do not understand how to calculate some of these Scoring effects. I was also unable to find any online resources to help clarify these calculations.
A scoring template form to calculate the end of game scores would be of great assistance to help remember each thing that should be added up such as resources left over and workers on the hanger board.
The other tricky thing, but learnable is how to move airplanes and build airstrips which can happen before, during or after your move.
Another trick is remembering to grab your island resources immediately after building an airstrip as the resources can be used in the remainder of your turn to help progress your journey or build other airstrips in the same turn.
Don't forget to pay the resources to the first player that has an airstrip on the island if your are also building one there after them..
Personally I think the airstrips should be called hangers as that is what they look like when placed on the island. It makes sense to have one airstrip on an island with multiple hangers than up to four airstrips on the island.
Who knows what this Scoring effect means? "Worth the points listed on the tile for each of your Airstrips on an island that surrounds this island (either orthogonally or diagonally adjacent) at the end of the game. (this does not include this island)" Wording probably should have said "for each of the surrounding islands with one of your airstrips..."
My guess for this one is any player with their airstrip on this center card multiplys the value of the centre island by the number of surrounding islands that contain one of their airstrips. The center island does not need to be completely surrounded by airstrips of the player.
If the island is on the corner of the gaming area then at most up to three other islands with their airstrips will qualify. Same with when on a border but not a corner, at most 5 islands can qualify.
Thank you! This helped alot. :)
Thaaaaank youuuuu!!!! I'm debating if the game is worth buying or not and this helps out a lot
This was a fantastic video! Going to buy this game! :)
The 2x2 Scoring effect needs examples. I am not sure what to do here. "Worth the points listed on the tile for each distinct 2x2 square area where you have Airstrips on each island at the end of the game. (An island may not be counted as part of more than 1 square.)"
I think this means anywhere on the playing field if you have four islands with airstrips forming a square pattern then for that group of 4 islands you count a score of 3. Additional 2x2 squares must not be included in other 2x2 scores. Each additional 2x2 island group is worth 3 points.
If none qualify you get no point value for this type of island.
