Interesting. The unique non-rocking reclining design of the Leap is exactly why I like it more than others. I'm actually looking for more chairs like that. The way the seat stays flat throughout the travel allows me to "push off" with my legs with more even force. If I wanted a rocking chair then I'd just get a rocking chair lol.
@ThBlueSalamander As in the back support reclines with the seat at the same time, similar to a rocking chair (the Aeron is like this). In contrast, when you recline in a Steelcase leap, the back support tilts back while the seat remains parallel to the floor. It's a completely different recline system and feels more like the seat is sliding forward rather than the entire chair rocking.
I have owned an Embody for eight years looks almost new. I had a lot of replacement arms (button issue) but they provided new ones and fitted them at home. They are now giving me a new chair after eight years because of the arm button issue which is immense. Worth every single penny. It was purchased to help cure my sciatica and that's exactly what it did. I have tried every chair on the market in this range never found a better one. BTW the gaming embody is worse than the original one if you want healthy posture buy the original one I have owned all of these chairs my experience is Embody hands down best. Always try at a dealer before you buy.
Here's what I found with Perplexity Pro tonight Based on the search results, the Herman Miller Embody Gaming chair and the Regular Embody have some differences in terms of backrest design and curvature: Backrest Curvature: The Regular Embody has a more even distribution of cushioning along the backrest, which provides a "hugging" sensation. However, it has been noted to push shoulders forward, especially for taller or broader individuals3. The Logitech Gaming Embody includes an additional strip of foam along the spine, which is intended to support a straighter posture. This design might feel stiffer but offers more support when sitting straight3. Shoulder Fit: Users have reported that the Regular Embody can make shoulders feel rounded due to its design, particularly for those over 6 feet tall3. The Gaming Embody seems to have a slightly different design that might accommodate broader shoulders better by not pushing them forward as much3. Overall, the Gaming version appears to be less curved in terms of shoulder accommodation compared to the Regular version, which might make it more suitable for individuals concerned about shoulder rounding. However, personal comfort can vary, so trying both versions if possible would be ideal to determine which fits better for your specific needs.
I'm typing this comment perched comfortably in my 4-day-old Haworth Fern. I got the mesh back, forward tilt, lumbar, aluminum base version, and so far, I love it. Coming from a 3-year-old Sidiz T-50 that I was bottoming out on (second replacement cushion), and the length of the seat was causing my legs to regularly go numb. I have to sit at my desk between WFH and gaming up to 10 hours a day, and your chair comparison videos are what pushed me over to the Fern. It's pretty amazing the amount of adjustability I have vs. other chairs I've had. The recline is the number one star for me, though; it provides enough tension that I'm able to comfortably and naturally recline slightly while working without having to lock it off or stress my legs. The adjustable arms are a close second as a favorite feature. As for the seat cushion, it's definitely on the firm side, and I'm glad to hear that it softens up over time. However, the T-50 cushion was so quick to bottom out that the firmness of the Fern's cushion was actually a selling point for me. The one thing I do miss a little is a headrest. The T-50 wasn't great, but it did fit into the crook of the neck when I wanted to recline all the way back. I'm considering getting the Atlas headrest Fern adapter to add a headrest. Keep up the great videos, and my next purchase is going to be a standing desk. The BTOD desk is my leading choice so far!
That's what I ordered yesterday. This will be a big upgrade for me as my past purchases have been at the local office depot store. I tried a few chairs at a Relax the Back store, but only the high-end models ($2k to $3k) seemed worth looking at. That got me to think that I'd have to get the something like the Fern, given all the good reviews. It's not the biggest online purchase that I've made in the past 2 months, so I hope I made the right decision.
I've had the gaming Embody for a bit over a month, seat and back are amazing, no issues with the arms personally. I got it while it was on sale and while it was still quite expensive the 12 year warranty makes it really worth the investment, it feels like it'll last much longer than that. I love the recline and being able to stretch my arms and chest out.
It's a great chair, I have it and the Aeron. I have two gripes 1) you can't push the arms back - this is an issue when I want to lock in and scoot closer to my desk, my aeron gives me that adjustment. 2) the upper back is a bit too curved and digs into my shoulders and I fear it could cause posture issues rotating my shoulders too far forward over time. I'm still on the fence with keeping this thing, but we'll see.
Tried used versions of all 3 of these, and went with the Leap - the lumbar support was just crazy, and nothing could compete with it. Plus that softer chair edge on the seat was a huge selling point, as I have very thick thighs that have a habit of falling asleep due to digging into the chair seat edges. He's also right about the flexibility - the back moves with you literally all day - it's fantastic. All 3 were great, and if you are a medium height like me (5'11.5" but with a torso of someone who is probably 5'7" haha) you'd probably be happy with any of them. However, the leaps are a ton cheaper used and refurbished, because there are just so many of them out there. I picked up one that was literally never sat in from an office that was shut down and went out of business due to the lockdowns here in California, and it was only 425 bucks. Plus, there were tons of other options of similar quality out there for even less - I was just sold on the brand new one for a few dollars more haha. Thanks for all the videos, they were very helpful in choosing a chair, and it has been literally lifechanging for my back since then (owned it about a year now).
I have a degenerative disc issue and living with a pain. Bought fern a month ago thanks to you guys good review and it made tons of difference. Great chair that puts mininal pressure to your lower back. Havent tried others but fern defintely worked for me!
@@joncosta5477 the way the back rest is designed, it is more than enough flexible. I have not tried though but I checked many sites and videos since it is an expensive upgrade. So I chose not to.
I've had my leap v2 for almost a year and a half. My only other experience with a high end chair was the Herman Miller Mirra (v1). I really liked it and didn't think I'd find another chair I liked as much. But after giving the leap v2 a fair shake, I've found myself looking forward to sitting in it every day.
I’m waiting for mine to come and hoping it works for me. The Embody was painful for me to sit in for over an hour my butt and legs would hurt and go numb regardless of how I set it via the online instructions from TH-cam by multiple sources. I’m 6.2 240lbs.
@@RedRyz3n how do you like it ? I've got the Leap v2 as well, since about 10 years, using it daily for at least 8 hours, still holding up quite well ;)
Have to go with the Leap for myself, here, in Australia. Fern is too hard/impossible to get in the recommended config in Australia and the Embody is really, really expensive.
3:00 I had the same experience. When I was trying out a ton of chairs I LOVED the fern, but i only got to try one out with the headrest. I wanted to like it so bad and was convinced I needed on. I ended up getting an aeron and bought the third party headrest, hated it too, and now i don't use it anyway and the aeron hurst. Man i wish I got the fern. It felt like a straight upgrade to the embody.
Add a Atlas Embody headrest to that herman miller embody and it will be the best chair ever made. I got my atlas added a month ago and makes the chair into another monster
Currently A/B testing an Embody and Fern (both used). Both are great but def feel quite different. I wear shorts a lot for wfh and prefer the embody fabric vs the fern which is a bit scratchy. I don’t have the lumbar on the fern, have played around with a pillow to provide some support. So far I’ve never felt back pain in the embody but have w the fern. Still playing w the seat depth adjustment. For me I really don’t like the gap you get when you pull it forward. So I’ve pushed it back to try to find a sweet spot. I prefer the Fern arms and the recline is better IMHO. I also like the forward tilt on it. Hope to test more and get a better idea of which is best. Def agree if you can test drive first that’s the way to go.
I believe the fern has two fabrics, the mesh and the digital knit I’m curious , which one do you have/think is scratchy? I don’t own either but am shopping
@@acali18 I have the Fern in Cornflower and I too find the seat fabric to a bit on the scratchy side. However, that fabric choice on the retail store does say textured. It doesn't bother me too much since my shorts that I usually wear go to my knees. For the back I have the Mesh and it's not scratchy at all.
@@acali18 have the orange digital knit. It’s the seat pad fabric for me though that’s the issue. That internal pad might be different on the digital knit vs the normal mesh, but having sat it both the outer fabric material seems pretty similar. Kinda reminds me of how some wool sweaters can be a bit scratchy. Not horrible just notice it vs the Embody.
Have you tried the Kinnarps Free Float? I am using both a Kinnarps Free Float 6240 and the Gaming Embody right now and honestly the Kinnarps is insane. The fact that the seat and back tilt irrespective of eachother and that you can actually adjust your back height (for perfect lumbar support) feels really good. Whereas I sometimes feel like the Embody's support is a bit too far down on my tailbone.
I tried the regular Herman Miller Embody and it felt like I was sitting on a block of concrete. Zero feel of padding. Butt hurt extremely bad after 1 hour of sitting. I'm now considering the Fern.
me too and HM customer support is horrible. I returned my Embody and I'm waiting for the leap v2 to come in. The Fern is nice looking but the build quality isn't as solid IMO, but lets see what happens.
@@hartboxer1422 The Leap chair is very comfortable, but if you buy it from a refurbished reseller, the quality may be hit or miss. I purchased mine from Crandall Office and experienced an awful screeching noise when reclining. Moreover, the chair was very dirty straight out of the box, and both handles rattled a lot when moving around. When I contacted Crandall, they sent me a video that showed how to disassemble the seat and lubricate the spring. The solution worked, but only for two days, after which the noise returned. At $700, I found these issues unacceptable and returned the chair. I decided to purchase the Fern with the digital knit, even though some people said that the Fern's built quality was also hit or miss. Fortunately, I received it in excellent condition, and it has been incredibly comfortable for 7+ hours of sitting. I'm pleased with my decision to purchase the Fern, and I intend to keep it.
@@RedRyz3n I ended up with the Fern. I'm about 2 months in and the chair has broken in. It's comfortable. Way more than the Embody was. Also doesn't make those god awful plastic creaks like Embody did either. It's totally silent.
You reviews have convinced me to upgrade from my bowery chair. I saw the lamia in stock on your website last night and had to order it immediately. Here’s to hoping that it is a significant upgrade.
Great video. I'm 5,8 skinny and live in Australia I have been realy wanting a digital knit fern but the only version I can find is the basic black with shocking quality control in comparison to the fern I see in these videos. Also looked into buying directly, but haworths website is terrible, and the cost just sky-rockets. Besides the leap v2 and the embody what other chairs you can get in australia, would you recommend them? Creating a chair list for each continent or country would be great.
I'm in Melbourne and have gone through a little bit of a chair rabbit hole recently. Don't have tonnes of cash and my budget was roughly AUD 600. Bought an Ergotune Supreme V3 which I really liked except the lumbar was too aggressive and couldn't adjust it to a point that worked for me - for my wife it was the most comfortable chair she'd ever sat in. She loved the lumbar support. Great recline and mesh felt good. The arms were quite adjustable - similar to a leap V2, but slightly more limited. Ultimately had to return it because of the lumbar. Fortunately their returns and service were really good. They offered suggestions on the lumbar issue but when I still couldn't make it work they arranged it to be picked up and got a full refund (I did take steps to make sure I kept everything in top condition and took notes on packaging so I sent it back almost exactly as it came). Finally ended up getting a second hand Leap V2 yesterday. Arms are excellent, recline is interesting - I'd say I probably preferred the ergotune slightly - but I haven't had much time with this one. Lumbar is much more suited to me here and I'll be holding onto it. While I could find tonnes of second hand Aeron's they were mostly V1's and generally really really worn.
I tried the embody and it was extremely uncomfortable. I did give it 28 days, but the comfort never improved. Furthermore, the return process and dealing with HM was horrible, and I'll never buy a HM product again. They screwed up the return process, did not send me a return label, lost the chair and charged me over $100 to return the chair. They don't explicitly state that they will charge you a fee for the initial shipping and the return. Their website literally says they will charge a return, but nothing about charging you for the initial shipment to you. I live in ATL and I wish there was a store I could go to, to try out these high-end chairs before buying.
In ATL you should be able to find a dealer for each of the high end chairs. I know Design Within Reach had Herman Miller chairs back when I was trying them.
You should try the Asus Rog Destrier, it seems to be definitely better than the usual gaming chairs. I don't know how much it is on the level of these 3 you mentioned in this video, but it definitely seems like a more sensible alternative to the Vantum.
It's going to be interesting to see more of these premium companies making their own gaming chairs. I'm honestly shocked Herman Miller already took the leap of faith on the Vantum, and it even has a headrest which is sacrilegious to their design philosophy of no headrests.
@@slvrization Gaming chairs have rocked the office chair industry so hard that the top brands have already responded. People's idea of a computer chair is more than just productivity, but also lounging, relaxing, and 'kicking back with our feet up'. This is why headrests are so important for the lounging aspect of a computer chair, people want indulge in entertainment without straining ourselves.
Picked up the destrier yesterday. Lumbar support broke within 24 hrs to where the left side no longer adjusts. Gonna return it and currently deciding between fern or embody. Leaning towards fern. As far as the chair. It feels good. I like a more aggressive lumbar support so it ticked off the marks. I’d recommend it….but my luck with ASUS has not been great even with my pc parts. The mesh for the seat and backrest are a little firmer than I thought it would be, so take that into consideration. I’m 5’8 170 lbs and fitting in the chair felt really nice.
lol been looking for this exact review. I have a leap, but the gaming embody is calling to me. Will I be let down? Is it a side grade? I do like pronounced lumbar. Is the fern’s lumbar really that bad?
On my 4th Haworth Fern digital knit in 11 months. I agree QC is terrible with Haworth Fern. (Digital knit, lumbar support, no forward tilt, no headrest, plastic base.) bought the custom headrest from atlas headrests for the fern which is fantastic. I do feel like the cushion on the fern is lacking. I’m 6’3 at 200lbs sometimes get fatigued sitting in the cushion and was wondering if the embody would be better cushion wise. If so, I may get an embody gaming and give this fern to my wife who loves my fern.
@@btodtv so the first chair I ordered without lumbar and within 30 days realized lower back pain so I requested an exchange with one with lumbar support. Second chair I got had a seat pan that was tilted and causing me to sit more heavily on one side compared to the other and not centered. Third chair I received the lumbar support wouldn’t stay in place and it would slide all the way down to where it’s not even effective on my back. On the 4th chair as of last week now so we’ll see how this goes.
@@btodtv would you guys say the Herman miller gaming embody seat cushion is a bit more soft and supportive than the ferns? I have to use a cushion lab seat cushion on my fern for it to be tolerable not great but it’s fine.
I've seen people talking about the build quality of the Fern. Basically it should be a $400 chair, not a thousand dollar plus chair. In fact apparently it used to be much cheaper before chair prices went crazy.
Those are people that like to talk to talk. The Fern has never been priced close to $400. Wasn’t even under $1,000. It’s among the most well built chairs on the market. Anyone saying otherwise has no idea what they are talking about. -Ryan
@@btodtv The real issue is none of these high end chairs are in stock anywhere. Everywhere I see it advertised says available to order. No one keeps stock of them. How can someone buy a chair for thousands without ever sitting in it?
As a French citizen i am not able to buy the digital knit for the Fern, which is a shame, according to your review. And the embody costs 1730$ so... i very hesitant on which to buy. If you can help me !
Same issue in the UK, but it's got something to do with EU material quality laws. Apparently, Haworth isn't allowed to sell the Fern with the Digital Knit configuration in any European country. But rumors say they're working on something...
@XoVann I personally wouldn't pay that much for the Embody, and it might end up going on sale if the demand is low. If you desperately need a good quality chair right now, then I'd suggest checking out some European brands like HAG, Kinnarps, Interstuhl, and RH.
@@XoVann the embody logitech edition is selling for 1350 euros at the moment if that helps, from the HM website. I also live in France and am contemplating buying it. But before that, I'll maybe try it in their showroom, gotta take an appointment though... seems a bit formal.
This man gained my respect fast, only to the idea of how he is gentile with his words. And he talks to you with no music just you, and him. I feel horned to like his videos. Stay true ❤
Thanks for the vids, keep them coming! One question: I got the Gesture and I just can't seem to find a comfortable position (I'm 6 foot) that doesn't push my lowerback forward... I've played with the lumbar support but I can't seem to get much out of it, it just pushes my back even more How do you find the Leap / Embody compared to the Gesture?
Herman Miller sells full options chairs in the EU with a selection of dealers available at least in the NL, Haworth has EU offices as well (though ordering a proper custom Fern is a pain in the ass), Steelcase has a webshop as well (Steelcase for EU are made in France).
I have a 2016 Used Leap V2 chair, and it has a problem with the seat cushion bottoming out, which puts a lot of pressure on my legs and feels uncomfortable. I'm considering getting a Gaming Embody chair. I was wondering if it also experiences the issue of the seat cushion bottoming out after extended use?
@@jean-phil The Embody is a special chair because the lumbar support position on its back is not adjustable and may not be suitable for everyone. I strongly recommend trying it out in person at a Herman Miller retail store or Design with Reach store before purchasing. Additionally, my personal habit is to sit very close to the desk, so I buy a chair with 4D armrests and adjust the armrest position as far back as possible, allowing me to be closer to the desk and keyboard. However, I really dislike that the Embody's armrests are not adjustable and are positioned too far forward. Another point is that the Embody has the deepest seat cushion of any chair I've seen, making it unsuitable for short people. Moreover, this chair is very stuffy and not suitable for hot regions. Among these three chairs, I have owned the Embody. I have sat on the Fern in a Haworth showroom, and it is my favorite of the three without any significant shortcomings. However, I have not used the Fern for an extended period, so perhaps I would discover some of its flaws with long-term use. I have a 2016 Leap V2, and the seat cushion is very uncomfortable, thin, and raised in the middle, which puts pressure on the thighs. But maybe my Leap V2 is too old, and the experience would be much better with a brand new one.
Can I ask you guys why you prefer the Leap to the Gesture? You said the arm rests are more adjustable but the Gestures go everywhere the Leaps does, the Leaps is just fixed? And when I sat in the Gesture I noticed how much more comfortable the seat was, while it was only minor straight away it is / was for me drastically more comfortable over the hour I sat in it. The rep also said due to the seat width difference and slightly thicker (although not by much) more men choose the Gesture vs the Leaf. So very interested to hear your thoughts BTODtv, love your channel by the way!
For me, I like everything about the Leap better. I think the seat is more comfortable because the Gesture seat feels softer and feels like I am bottoming at times. I also feel like it is slanted forward slightly, which I do not like. The arms on the Gesture are amazing but I prefer the Leap arms because they have almost the same adjustable capabilities, but I like the pads better on the Leap and they feel more solid to me. I also prefer the Leap back to the Gesture. The lumbar adjustment system is better on the Leap, and I like the way the back is really flexible but also strong enough to not bend so easily like the Gesture. -Ryan
Crazy how all three of these companies were founded so close together in West Michigan, yet they are still considered the best from all over the world. Steelcase is from Grand Rapids, Herman Miller from Zeeland, and Haworth from Holland, all of these places are along the same highway directly next to each other.
I though HM hq was in grand rapids and Haworth was in Zeeland, is it is crazy how they're all basically hq in grand rapids. And Deskhaus, Bissell and Meijer are hq out there as well
It’s the office furniture capitol of the US, probably the world honestly, in terms of high end companies. There are hundreds are very recognizable brands located there. -Ryan
I live in Michigan and Grand Rapids is great for getting furniture on Marketplace from and not much else. Terrible people, boring town. One of my good friends lives there so unfortunately I have to go there from time to time.
Huh, as a Dutch person it's interesting to see that "Holland" and "Zeeland" are places in the US in the same area. Perhaps Dutch settlers made their mark there?
@@TheEchelon yes, LOTS of Dutch people in grand rapids and this portion of the USA generally. The upper peninsula of Michigan is finish, Minnesota is Swedish, and the Dakotas are Norwegian, with Nebraska as the Dutch, I believe.
I was under the impression that the gaming edition of the embody was basically just a new color. What are the differences between the gaming edition and the regular embody?
It uses memory foam on top of the pixelated layer. I had the regular embody and gave it to my little brother and just got the gaming version a few days ago. Massive difference in comfort.
The Ferns I had exposure to were definitely hit and miss with assembly. the armrest pad and adjustment area had loose screws, one had a fairly loose back, and the tilt tension knob on all of them rub against their housing making god awful creaking noises. The embodys by comparison were just a crapshoot with the fabric/foam creaking or not creaking or questionably lubricated moving parts. All I know for sure is the build quality and the current prices do not line up
@@StardustLegacyFighter Herman Miller had some hit or miss chairs I had as well, Steelcase was the only company I've dealt with that I'd say had bullet proof chairs right out of the box. No deal breakers all around on any of the chairs, but certainly seemed like the assembly process might be more haphazard than one would want to see on quadruple digit products.
Hi Ryan, I currently have an Aeron with the PostureFit SL and I think it's the perfect amount of support for me at the most pronounced setting. I'm wondering how the Fern's lumbar support compares to the PostureFit SL and whether or not I should spec the fern with it if I were to go that route. Thanks!
Most ppl who buy the Fern don't tend to get the lumbar support with it since it doesn't have depth adjustment like the lumbar support systems on the Leap v2, Mirra 2, or Aeron. I remember BTOD getting the fully loaded Fern (regular mesh) and not liking the lumbar support and headrest.
So im searching thru your vids and havent yet ween it, but is there a good knock off version of the embody or fern? I have a leap and while i dont hate it the seat really doeant suit me. Im 6'6" and 300lbs so i really need a good amount of cushion in yhe seat.
It’s just not high on the priority list compared to the other videos we have in our schedule. I’m sure we will get one in at some point in the near future. -Ryan
Kudos for mentioning Haworth QC. Armrests on the "quick shipping version" (black plastic, no lumbar, no headrest, with 4D, with forward tilt) produce horrible squeaks and wobble during the normal usage. Here's the recording: th-cam.com/users/shortsp96D2deS_yM It drives me crazy and I am seriously considering something else.
LMAO that's one of the reasons I am getting rid of my Fern, does the same thing and it drives me crazy and mine is leather fully loaded except for a headrest. Well they wobble but don't squeak so that's something. 🤷♂
Did you ever had defect on a leap chair like in 4:35? Does the arm pads move slightly, don't they? Mine move very slightly, but it looks the same with yours also IMO
In my search for a new chair, I looked at some of your reviews and therefore decided against the Gesture (tailbone problems - I've had problems with other chairs) and ordered the Fern (as you like it, without lumbar, without headrest). Unfortunately, I have the feeling that at 187cm I am simply too tall for the chair. I actually have to pull the seat out at least 3 clicks, but this creates a large gap between the seat and backrest, which makes the chair just uncomfortable. It's a real shame, because apart from that I really like the chair. Now the search continues :(
I'm seriously considering a non-gaming Embody. I'm split between a used refurbished model for 850, or brand new in the box from the AD for 1150, with the warranty and, importantly, returns.
I have the gaming embody and it’s pretty good, very wide seat. Just be ready to lube up the the seat pan adjustment cause they get creaky but other than that I really like it.
Which one of these chairs is the most upright in its neutral/default position? We have a Zody classic here at the house and that little bit of dead space in its upright position drives me nuts
I bought a leap v2 and have trialled it for 2 weeks working from home 9hours a day. My lower back is killing me, I definitely slouched before so I'm not sure if it's correcting bad posture or it's just not for me, have removed the lumbar support. Any advice? 5'11 75kg
I just sat in an embody for the first time today and I was instantly disappointed. The plastic system in the back of it just did not feel comfortable at first sit. We made some adjustments, it was better - but as someone who is just starting to search for a nicer chair for my home office - I expected more here. I honestly wonder - how many people, if they didn't know the brand before they sat in it, would still pick this chair as something they loved. Feels like an acquired taste. The leap was an instant comfort - but really loses on the aesthetics. Hoping to find a fern to see if its my Goldilocks.
I just got the embody... and I'm hating it... the seat length adjustment handle is poking against my lower thigh that its really painful! and the seat feels hot....
I tried HM embody in a shop. It's really special. It creaks and squeaks from every movement. It's such a terrible chair that I don't get how can someone use it - yes it was a showroom piece but nevertheless a chair for that price should never make so many noises it sounded worse than a chinese 100 chair. I make videos and stream so I need a silent chair and fern was the best - tried also SC gesture but fern is the best. I also like the headrest even though it's not very soft. Fern has best looks, best comfort and is almost completely silent.
It's difficult to find a high-end ergonomic chair with a great headrest for neck support. I work and play on my computer 10-14 hours per day and I have cervical disc degeneration. Having a headrest to just give that extra support when my neck gets tired is crucial during work hours but also crucial during relaxation when I just want to lean back and watch something at the PC. I don't understand how people are leaning back on these chairs without a headrest. I see people do it in these videos for a few seconds at a time, but I don't believe anyone is actually using the full recline ability on any of these chairs without a headrest present. I feel like these chairs are not meant to be lounged in.. they expect you to have perfect posture and great neck muscles or something. There was a great deal on a factory return for a leap V2 with headrest and no arms (which I prefer), so I grabbed one. As many have already noted, the headrest is a joke. It's like a headrest in a car seat. It's no better than the flat highback of my cheapo gaming race style chair. The back and lumbar is pretty nice, but the seat is just so-so. Actually not even a huge improvement over my cheapo gaming chair that's been used for 7 years. I only paid $800 shipped, but even then, I feel like for that price I should be getting a much better seat cushion and headrest. It's 4x as much as my cheapo gaming chair, but not even 2x as comfortable. It's maybe 35% more comfortable. Probably going to return it and try an embody or fern and add the aftermarket h3 headrest adapter. I also looked at the Neutral Posture 8000 and it looks great, but not sure how it gets ranked by BTOD as a lower tier on the Seat Comfort review video than the Leap V2, because the leap v2 seat is not good. I don't have other high-end chairs to compare it to, but just compared to my cheapo racing chair, it's not much of an improvement, IMO.
Are there any people out there who are a bit bigger than average who have used these chairs and recommend one? I’ve noticed all these reviewers are pretty average/smaller size. I’m by no means huge but I’m 6’ and 225 lbs with very wide shoulders. All the chairs I’ve had roll my shoulders forward and give me terrible back pains. Please help.
If you don't mind sharing, would you mind telling me your height and weight? I'm 6'4" at 265lbs so I need a chair that is reasonably tall back and takes weight well. I currently have a HM Embody and after 4 years of use I'm looking into other options. I have been having Thoracic spine / rib pain and the Drs haven't been able to figure out the source of the pain, so I'm evaluating everything in my life from my work ergonomics (desk/chair, etc), bed/sleep positions, as well as my home computer chair. I primarily use the Embody for tasks, however when I'm controller-gaming I will lean back and prop my feet up on the desk. This isn't something that any chair can do, but the Embody does quite well. That said, I wonder if that position has anything to do with my back/rib pain, so I've ordered a standing desk to allow me to instead prop my feet up under the desk instead of on top. OH, and I ordered myself a Secretlab Titan Evo XL for Christmas (which I am promptly returning for being terribly uncomfortable).
I returned my Fern as well. The seat pan was the main reason for returning. It put pressure on the fron of my legs, and I'm also tall enough to where the gap at the back became a problem. I bought a regualr Embody during the sale and am sitting comfotably in it right now. I personally love the seat pan despite other's complaints. The springy "pixelated" support does make you feel like you're kinda floating, and I don't get tailbone pain despite it being very firm and supportive. I also love the seat depth adjustment despite most people disliking it. The design completely eliminates the gap issue which is important for me. Yes, the handles are ugly and the adjustment is a bit clunky, but it's set and forget, and these compromises are well worth it to eliminate the gap IMO. The backrest also feels more supportive than the Fern, which I think will be good in the long run, as I got a bit of lower back pain from the Fern being so soft that I could slouch into it. My back is still getting used to it but I think it will be amazing once I do. I did just buy a Gaming Embody because it went on sale and is $300 cheaper than the regular one, and I think the extra foam will make the seat even more comfortable than it already is. If that one is just as good or better I plan on returning the regular Embody and keeping the Gaming one (and saving $300 in the process).
@@fUZZYbrainZ14 I have tried the Embody a few times, it seems promising. Let me start out by saying I have the Fern in black leather with the lumbar, it's a beautiful chair. I find the back thin, the arm rests loose, the seat cushion so so and the thin top of the back pushes into the base of my skull which is annoying. I have a Leap V1 and a Haworth Improve H.E. also and they are much more comfortable than my Fern. If the Embody doesn't workout I will just get the Lamia or Ameap from BTOD, I know for sure I will like those. I still want to try a Humanscale Freedom but those never come up for sale on Marketplace.
@@ethanmarkowitz5360 appreciate the feedback. I also ordered the regular embody on sale and am waiting on that. I heard that new models have the same padding in the seat at the gaming embody so hope I don't need to switch.
@fUZZYbrainZ14 They did ad padding to the regular Embody, but it's not the same the regular one has a scrim foam whereas the Gaming Embody has the copper infused foam, which is softer. At least that's what I think.
what would you pick if you had to choose between the Fern in the original mesh VS the gaming embody? (cant seem to find the fern with digital knit in the UK)
@@Joe-rh4bd i have the herman miller embody. its pretty good, kinda wish it had more lumbar support is the only thing. i cant compare it to the fern as i never had it sadly.
Recently spent the money on an HM Embody gaming chair after watching tons of your reviews and came from the extremely affordable Ticova. I've only had it about a week but not quite sure if I'm happy with its quality or comfortability. The most money I've spent on a chair up until this point was a Ticova and maybe I had too high of expectations but not sure if this Embody is what I'm looking for. The seat is definitely not as comfortable as I would prefer and the chair makes creaking noises that it shouldn't for being as expensive as it is. I was considering the Fern and now wondering if I should of went with it. Unfortunately Herman Miller only gives you 30 days to try the chair out so I need to make my decision quick.
I was looking into the fern and the leapv2, seems like it's a mixed bag with them both. I honestly think that you need to try them for yourself to see what suits you more. I myself an booking a couple appointments to go look at the chairs and see what one is better. Of course, sitting on it for 5 mins wont be as reliable as when you buy it. Chairs are such a mixed bag lol, at this point I'd consider taking my chair from my car cause that's really comfy 😂 Can't believe how it's 2023 and we don't have a chair that fits all the characteristics needed to make everyone happy. Embody itself I heard also comes due to preferences which as it seems you aren't really enjoying it.
@@alexhere18 Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately I cannot recommend the Embody. It's developed so many creaks and squeaks you would have no clue this is a $1500 chair. I do not find it to be very comfortable either. I even added the aftermarket Atlas headrest to help things. I would recommend finding another chair for the money.
Greg/Ryan, would you guys ever consider shipping to Canada in the future? I live really close to your office, yet can't order anything from you guys. I'd love to buy from you. Much love from your fellow neighbours, cya
We can ship to Canada now, it’s just usually not worth the extra cost for most people. The additional charges for duties, taxes, shipping, etc makes it really expensive. -Ryan
@@btodtv That's fair, thanks for the quick response. If it's not too appropriate, do you know any companies based over here that does quality refurbishing similar like you?
Currently have the Leap and in the process of returning it as I've encountered cosmetic and functional issues with three different Leap chairs. I'm now going back and forth between the Fern and Embody, and there are unfortunately no local businesses where I can go and test them out in person. I'm thinking of ordering the Fern Digital Knit chair first since returns are free through Haworth's website. The configuration I'd go with would be no lumbar support or forward tilt - just the aluminum base. Do you have any suggestions on the seat fabric (i.e. wool vs synthetic)? The colour options I like the most (i.e. Ember) seem to have wool in them and I'm not sure how comfortable it would be on this chair.
I ended up returning the Fern. I didn't like how hard the arm rests were. The bottom seat pad wasn't comfortable for me, and I also wasn't getting the mid/upper back support I was hoping for. It's a nice looking chair, and it offers great flexibility, but it just didn't work out for my body type. Between the Leap and Fern, I liked the Leap better from a comfort standpoint. The Fern, however, seems higher quality. The only reason I didn't stick with the Leap is because of the consistent issues I encountered with the three chairs I purchased. I didn't want to risk being stuck with a poorly built product. I just received my gaming Embody chair today, and so far so good. The only thing I dislike about it at the moment is the absence of 4D armrests. I find that when my arms are planted on the arm rests, they tend to slide close to the edges which is annoying. I miss having 4D armrests, but I'll take comfort over that if I need to.
Has anyone dealt with the Embody pushing into their shoulders making it feel like you're rounding your shoulders? Any solutions you've found. That's been my main difficulty with adjusting to the embody
You can try loosening the back tension control (the round knob at the front-bottom of the seat). This will make it easier to rock back but also flattens out the shoulder area and makes it more pliable, lessening that rounding shoulder feeling
theres a video out concerning the atlas headrest for the chair that supposedly fixes that problem for tall people, its about 180 bucks for the headrest but theres another youtuber whos done a video on it, might want to check it out. search up embody headrest you'll find it
Forget all these expensive chairs. I bought them all with deep regret. Very expensive but gives me neck pain. The way these chair work with their curve and lean bacl, strains your neck muscles and results in neck pain. None of them work for me. And now i am saddled in debt from these chairs costinf thousands of dollars in my country! I went back to a simple straight back dining chair and i use a 3rd party lumbar support. Works fantastic for a fraction of the cost!!
If a dining chair is working better for you, that's a sign you have developed some seriously bad habits that will take time to work though. But I feel this is bad information to give to the community -Greg
It’s an easy fix if you have the tools. Many people don’t have the tools. Personally, I don’t think people should need to have a specific tool to tighten bolts on a brand new $1,500 chair. That was kind of the point I was getting at. -Ryan
Embody is the ultimate sitting machine. I'm on my third. Several spinal surgeries + muscalar diaeases. I can work no problem with that chair for full days. No other chair has given me more than 30-60 mins comfort. I have bought so many 2000k + chairs... Embody is totally in a league of its own.
I am 6 foot 7 and 230 pounds. I would love to get an embody but it isn't tall enough in back by like a foot. Seat isn't long enough either but I could probably work with that. I have to believe there is a market for an upsized embody in the gaming segment even for those who are not nearly as tall as I am. I think Embody Throne for example would be awesome.
I'm 6'3" with most of my height in my torso (just a 30 inch inseam for my jeans) and had no problem with the Embody chairs at work, but they weren't the gamer models, not sure how much of a difference it makes . Also the seat's depth was adjustable, I did have to max that out but it was great after I adjusted that.
Had the Fern for half a year now. It's ridiculously comfy. So much so, that I wish the headrest offering was better because my head is above where the top of the chair ends so I can't lean by head back. Purposely didn't get the headrest they offer because of all the feedback about it.
It frustrates me to no end how most High-End chairs out there don't have a proper headrest, or just a headrest at all. Herman Miller is the biggest culprit to this issue, they somehow believe no headrest is better for posture... at least give us the option! The Steelcase Gesture is the only one that has a tried-and-true headrest.
I think it’s because research shows that a headrest isn’t needed for an ergonomic chair. It’s more of a luxury for very specific situations, like reclining back quite a bit. But very few headrests are useful all the time when using a chair and if they are, that means they are always in the way and never avoidable. I think sometimes people forget that there are considerable drawbacks to things and not just positives. The headrest is the perfect example. Personally, I think the headrest is the most overrated feature found in office chairs. Most people thinks it’s necessary until they get one and then realize they almost never use it. -Ryan
@@venom5809nah.. This is coming from someone that paid extra for a Aeron Headrest. When you are working, you aren't really using it. I have it at work and only use it when I watch movies
The biggest issue with Herman Miller is they're still using FedEx. The most incompetent delivery service in the US. I have never had a good experience with Fedex.
Lol yea I ordered the gaming embody and the box was on its wide when delivered even when there were arrows saying to keep it up a certain direction, no harm done to the chair but lol idk why they did that
My main issue with the Embody eneded up being that it keeps pushing into your thighs no matter what and the more you retract the seat the harder and rounder the edge becomes. Atrocious design for a decent chair.
also do not buy any haworth chairs i have bought 2 of them the armpads disentrigrate after 3 years even with their 10 year waranty the waranty doesnt cover the armpads and the seat for the butt is terrible after 2 years its just horendeous the only good thing about the fern is the back rest hope someone steals that design and puts in on a herman miller similar frame that can forward tilt id pay 2000 euros for that kind of chair
Just recently, Ahnestly reviewed the Asus gaming chair and gave it a very high rating. Since the content of Ahnestly's channel is very similar to that of BTOD, I guess there's a significant overlap in their followers. This is probably why you're seeing so many comments about the Asus chair.
What do you mean by rocking lol
Why do you say the Embody Logitech is worse than the original for healthy posture?
Here's what I found with Perplexity Pro tonight
Based on the search results, the Herman Miller Embody Gaming chair and the Regular Embody have some differences in terms of backrest design and curvature:
Backrest Curvature:
The Regular Embody has a more even distribution of cushioning along the backrest, which provides a "hugging" sensation. However, it has been noted to push shoulders forward, especially for taller or broader individuals3.
The Logitech Gaming Embody includes an additional strip of foam along the spine, which is intended to support a straighter posture. This design might feel stiffer but offers more support when sitting straight3.
Shoulder Fit:
Users have reported that the Regular Embody can make shoulders feel rounded due to its design, particularly for those over 6 feet tall3.
@@tie_breakerhow’s it going?
Any updates?
I've had the gaming Embody for a bit over a month, seat and back are amazing, no issues with the arms personally. I got it while it was on sale and while it was still quite expensive the 12 year warranty makes it really worth the investment, it feels like it'll last much longer than that. I love the recline and being able to stretch my arms and chest out.
this was my exact thoughts when deciding to buy a new chair. HM goated for the 12 year warranty

Moreover, the chair was very dirty straight out of the box, and both handles rattled a lot when moving around. When I contacted Crandall, they sent me a video that showed how to disassemble the seat and lubricate the spring. The solution worked, but only for two days, after which the noise returned.
What chair did you end up getting?
Any chance of you guys reviewing the Asus Destrier chair? It looks super promising.
At least you have a return option. Try living in Australia, where they charge $3200 for the Embody + $150 delivery with NO return policy.

@@StardustLegacyFighter What a shame indeed... now i don't know if i can handle the astronomous price of the Embody
@XoVann I personally wouldn't pay that much for the Embody, and it might end up going on sale if the demand is low.
If you desperately need a good quality chair right now, then I'd suggest checking out some European brands like HAG, Kinnarps, Interstuhl, and RH.
It's ok sale now in UK store

One question:
I got the Gesture and I just can't seem to find a comfortable position (I'm 6 foot) that doesn't push my lowerback forward... I've played with the lumbar support but I can't seem to get much out of it, it just pushes my back even more
How do you find the Leap / Embody compared to the Gesture?
Hey
Did you end up solving your problem? Did you get a new chair? I'm 6'3 and looking for a new chair. You think I would have problems with the leap?

@@ruumelan Oh thought Steelcase was like everywhere as well. I get for Haworth since its not as big as HM /Steelcase so its not available everywhere.
Herman Miller sells full options chairs in the EU with a selection of dealers available at least in the NL, Haworth has EU offices as well (though ordering a proper custom Fern is a pain in the ass), Steelcase has a webshop as well (Steelcase for EU are made in France).
Gesture would have been a better comparison for the steelcase model.
I have a 2016 Used Leap V2 chair, and it has a problem with the seat cushion bottoming out, which puts a lot of pressure on my legs and feels uncomfortable. I'm considering getting a Gaming Embody chair. I was wondering if it also experiences the issue of the seat cushion bottoming out after extended use?
i dont have an embody, but from my research, you can easily replace the seat foam on the embody with memory foam or whatever you want
do you have the embody now ? if so, which one do you prefer ? I also have the leap and thinking about buying the embody

If I recall, regular embody made from 2020 are the same except the "rigged lines" located on the upholstery (or whatever you call them)

All I know for sure is the build quality and the current prices do not line up
I'm seeing quite a few ppl complain about QC issues with Haworth.
It's not something I like to see for chairs being sold by high-end furniture brands.
Do you sell the leap with headrest?

How come you havent done a review or mention the Atlas headrest for the Embody. It makes the chair even better. Gotta let people know all the options.
Here's the recording: th-cam.com/users/shortsp96D2deS_yM
It drives me crazy and I am seriously considering something else.
LMAO that's one of the reasons I am getting rid of my Fern, does the same thing and it drives me crazy and mine is leather fully loaded except for a headrest. Well they wobble but don't squeak so that's something. 🤷♂
@BTODtv please test the Asus ROG Destrier 🙏🏼
Did you ever had defect on a leap chair like in 4:35?
Does the arm pads move slightly, don't they?
Mine move very slightly, but it looks the same with yours also IMO
The biggest complaint for the embody is the arms? Most complaints Ive been seeing are how obnoxiously loud the chair is but that's not even mentioned
Now the search continues :(
The Embody has the best seat of all of them and it’s not even close, but its back isn’t my favourite
I'm seriously considering a non-gaming Embody. I'm split between a used refurbished model for 850, or brand new in the box from the AD for 1150, with the warranty and, importantly, returns.
If you can afford it, the extra 300 for peace of mind with the warranty and a full refund sounds well worth it.
I'm around 5.5', would you say they would all fit me well, or is there a better one for my height?
Nice video but I still can't choose between these 3 chairs, please help me
I have the gaming embody and it’s pretty good, very wide seat. Just be ready to lube up the the seat pan adjustment cause they get creaky but other than that I really like it.
the leap takes a lot of getting used to after slouching for so long
Which one of these chairs is the most upright in its neutral/default position?

Have you tried the Knoll Generation?
Please help.
bros will do all this instead of just getting a used aeron chair
Can't stand my Fern anymore, just put it up for sale yesterday. Going to get an Embody.
Have you tried the embody? What makes you hate the fern?

How'd you like the fern? Did you end up ordering the embody?

It’s an easy fix if you have the tools. Many people don’t have the tools. Personally, I don’t think people should need to have a specific tool to tighten bolts on a brand new $1,500 chair. That was kind of the point I was getting at. -Ryan

i own the embody and im a sloucher... kills my back so i dont use it D:
-Ryan
