The iPad Air 2 is the second-generation iPad Air tablet computer designed, developed, and marketed by Apple. It was announced on October 16, 2014, alongside the iPad Mini 3, both of which were released on October 22, 2014. The iPad Air 2 is thinner, lighter and faster than its predecessor, the first-generation iPad Air, and features Touch ID with the height, width and screen size the same as the iPad Air.
The first-generation iPad Pro replaced the iPad Air 2 as the flagship iPad model, with the 9.7 inch version releasing March 31, 2016, and the Air 2 being relegated as the mid-range iPad model.
The iPad Air 2 was discontinued on March 21, 2017, as was the iPad Mini 2, alongside the introduction of the iPad (5th generation), which replaced the Air 2 as the entry-level iPad model. Its successor, the third-generation iPad Air, was released on March 18, 2019. The iPad Air 2 supported eight versions of iOS and iPadOS, from iOS 8 to iPadOS 15, but is not supported by iPadOS 16 due to hardware limitations.
With the release of iPadOS 13.4, the iPad Air 2 supports the new mouse and trackpad feature. It works by using the camera connection kits or via bluetooth. Bluetooth powered keyboards with a trackpad may also work depending on the manufacturer.
The iPad Air 2 inherits hardware similar to both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with a major change in processor to the Apple A8X, the high-end 3-core variant of the Apple A8. The iPad Air 2 has 2 GB RAM (making the iPad Air 2 the first iOS device to have more than 1 GB RAM) and the PowerVR GPU has 8 cores. It also uses the Apple M8 motion co-processor which has a barometer and is the first generation of the iPad to inherit the fingerprint Touch ID sensor from the iPhone. In addition, compared to the iPad Air, it includes an improved 8-megapixel (3264×2448) rear-facing camera with 10 fps burst mode and slow motion video at 120 fps, similar to the iPhone 5S camera capabilities. The front-facing FaceTime HD camera has also been improved with a larger ƒ/2.2 aperture, which allows 81% more light in the image. Apple added a gold option to the existing silver and space gray color choices for the iPad Air 2, the previous existing colors were used on the preceding iPad Air.
Unlike its iPad predecessors, the mute/orientation lock switch has been removed to accommodate the reduced depth.
It has a slightly smaller battery compared to the iPad Air, although Apple claims the same 10-hour battery life as before. The iPad Air 2 is available in 16, 32, 64 or 128 GB storage options with no storage expansion options.

Still watching this on my Ipad Air 2 . It was launched in 2014 but my device was manufactured in 2017.
It is still functioning well despite slight slower response.
I am using this right now watching your video. The ipad is useable. My only complaint is the wifi and data signal, Its a bit weak. But, i rate this ipad air 2, 8/10 in 2023 for media usage…
I used my iPad Air 2 (128gb WiFi) since 2014 until one month ago, the battery life was getting so bad and it’s slow as hell.
I upgraded to a refurbished 2018 11 inches iPad Pro (512GB Cellular). It’s so much better !
Battery health is at 86% on my Pro but it last so much longer than my Air 2, and it’s surprisingly still very fast on iPadOS 17.4 (fifth major update) compared to my Air 2 back when it was on iPadOS 13 (also fifth major update).
A12X is also a major upgrade over A8X.
If you still own an iPad Air 2, I definitely recommend you to upgrade to an iPad Pro 2018 at bare minimum.

well technically the A8X had only 1 extra cpu core, it did have double the Graphics power of the A8 which i did also confused at first glance

Still using mine daily. It's a bit slower than it used to be but I iove it. The battery is starting to go though so I will be updating soon. Not bad after 10 years of daily usage!
Why is it slower?
age I suppose. apps and safari seem to be more demanding so they take longer to load than they used to. I've upgraded to the iPad Air 4 in the meantime @@elimclovin703

Slow but perfectly usable, I feel no need to upgrade.
I use it for studying (books, slides, videos) watching movies and making video calls.
Plus the laminated screen is honestly so good.

@@daienaa i guess you meant gen 6 from 2018: it can be better due to to the faster processor and apple pencil support. In addition it should be easier to find one with a still good battery.
Avoid ipad 2017, same performance as ipad air 2, but the air 2 is a higher quality device.
@@marcolazzarin8106 Oh I mean the iPad 9,7(?) from 2017 because someone near me want to sell me one with 32gb and cellular for about $250 which makes me think it’s too expensive. Maybe I should get the air 2 instead if there’s no point in paying more for the 2017 one.

I think the Air 2 is one of the best low budget tablets you can buy…
You can easily get them for around 50€ (more or less the same in us $) and with latest iPadOS 15 it’s still pretty up to date cuz in first since 15 not really much changed against iPadOS 17 and it still get security support what’s most important…
When we see how long for example they supported iOS 12 on devices like iPhone 5s, iPad Air 1.gen, iPad mini 2. gen, iPod touch 6. gen we already talk about support for nearly 10 years for some devices what’s just incredible so we just can imagine how long Apple would still support iPadOS 15 but I didn’t think that it will be less even a couple of years longer…
So still a solid device for the next years I would guess (at least for the money you could get the device)…
And even after security updates it would still be great as media device cuz for music and videos this device will still be good so long we still use wireless lan…

For a kid that’s likely to break the tablet sooner than later it seems like a god choice. I mean you can buy really cheap new Android tablets but they won’t get much support anyway and they most likely do t have anymore powerful CPU or more memory at that price point and with Android being less efficient is probably going to run worse.
They will run mostly faster (experience on Len m9 tab), but with much worse display. And display is everything on tablet.

reason is that the display is laminated, you break the glass not even the lcd its gonna be over $100 for replacing the entire assembly, or heck even if just the glass its gonna be a lot of effort
a base line ipad (5th gen, 6th gen, etc) is better as the display isnt laminated, meaning cheap repairs if its not the lcd getting damaged
i think its better to not update ipad air 2 to ios 15 or even 14. these 2 version are recourse eating and ipad air 2 cant handle these 2 version. i have ipad air 2 and i remember it was much smoother with ios 13 and when i upgraded it to ios 14 lags started. I regret as hell with ios 15.8. dont make my mistake.

Just got one for 150 on ebay. Refurbished, perfect condition with 1 year warranty for my mother in law. Her 2 year old ipad fried. Not worth getting a new one after realizing they can fry so quickly. Its fine and saved 200 bucks.
iOS updates are obsolete now on this device. So TH-cam etc will be incompatible soon
