Killing airborne bacteria and viruses in pig barns with plasma device

  • Researchers at the University of Michigan are testing a prototype device designed to filter the air of a pig barn at a pork production farm by using nonthermal plasma to inactivate airborne pathogens to prevent the spread of disease.
The research team has previously demonstrated that a lab-scale device can achieve greater than 99% inactivation of an airborne viral surrogate, MS2 phage, a virus that infects E.coli bacteria. This new field prototype will test the system’s capabilities in a real farm environment.
The team is led by Herek Clack, a research associate professor in civil and environmental engineering: clacklab.engin.umich.edu/

Factory farming involves raising livestock in densely populated environments often called ‘concentrated animal feeding operations’. Common practices include packing pregnant pigs into gestation crates so small they cannot turn around, placing egg-laying hens in cages stacked on top of one another in massive enclosed buildings and raising cows on feedlots rather than the grass pastures many of us associate with ruminants.

When you say plasma , do you mean the arc produced by high voltage , the process gives off ozone which is used in water purification ?

I had the same idea to make a wearable device using nonthermal plasma to kill viruses. As usual, someone has already thought of it. That's why I'm watching this now :/

Interesting, but couldn't filtering of inlet air accomplish the same thing.? Of course, you can't really do much to the air in a space by filtering like a room air purifier does.. Gotta be a convection current to affect the whole volume of air.

From beef you risk e. coli and BSE infection, poultry have a high risk salmonella, scrapie from lamb and mutton. Any meat can be dangerous if there is poor higiene, clostridium botulinum or listeria monocytogenes. It is not the meat... is matters how you grow it, prepare it and cook it. Most cases of food intoxications come from canned fish...
