  • The combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling that has occurred in the last decade has environmental implications, and learning more about those effects and what policies need to be made to control them is important, says U-M Assistant Professor Brian Ellis. Ellis, who is studying the potential water quality impacts associated with hydraulic fracturing activities, explains the process of hydraulic fracturing and why it motivates his research.
    ABOUT THE PROFESSOR: Brain Ellis (www.cee.umich.edu/people/facul...) is an assistant professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (cee.engin.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan. His research interests cover topics related to the sustainable and safe development of emerging energy technologies, including geologic storage of CO2 and large-scale hydrualic fracturing of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs.

    you know fracking putting chemicals into the under ground water table will eventually contaminate all underground water , they're all connected the north west where most fracking occurs is at a higher elevation water will flow down into the rest of the states water tables at lower elevations contaminating them as well

    You didn't mention chemicals mixed in with water I been to Llanelli protest. . Idea why can't you send water to evaporate in shallow pools...

      likely the volume or the presence of hydrocarbons in the mixture.

      They do have flow back pits & occasionally misting pumps. However the sheer volume of flow back would probably take a lifetime to evaporate.

    Fracking is the cause of the homeless crises because the micro surface quakes are destroying the foundations of buildings in a much bigger area as currently thought and admitted by the operators. The vibration also erode shore lines and cause cracks on highways!

    Once the aquifer has been polluted by the toxic chemicals in the fracking fluid, how long does it take the groundwater to recover?

    communities have been profoundly impacted by hydraulic fracturing, this would be more comprehensive if this was included - natural gas is petroleum there is no clean petroleum.

    Increased risk and still pumping. Water tables are most vulnerable, and no long term studies exist. Really unfortunate folks.

    No, he did not mention any of the toxic chemicals added to the fracking process. Our water reservoirs are doomed by this fracking process. All underground water will one day be ruined.

      The talking points he used made me think that he was bought and paid for by the industry he was studying. I thought UM was supposed to be a beacon of higher learning and better than this...

    Yep, you break up laters of strata you mix the sediment, like stirring up a stream bed, think about all grass lands, that's your food agriculture , Meats all contaminated with radium, ethylene glycol, that's in the fracking water formula! Mmmmm good for your food supply!

      The incredible amount of sodium in that wastewater kills everything it touches. Don't let them fool you..... they don't even try to treat that poison water! Not where I live they don't they fill water trucks and spray it onto the dirt roads or dump it in ditches. They are irresponsible murderers! Everything around the wells is dead our beautiful mountains are dying all for that money. Sick bastards

    There is no difference between the Drilling Fluid used to drill the well and the Frack Fluid used to fracture the Formation. Drilling Fluid, i.e. MUD is Water, Clay, Dirt and part of sawdust (lignite/CLS).
    Frack Fluid is made out of the same chemical they make KYJelly out of HEC + 20-Mule Team Borax and Sand. Drilling Fluid can be reused. Frack Fluid can be filtered and reused. The stuff filtered out of Frack Fluid could be used to make BIO-DIESEL.

      @j.o.w.4099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Legionary But it's a short term solution. It may create more jobs now but natural gas is a finite resource and our planets' ecosystem relies on it too. I understand the majority of people working are just providing and living but unless there's a significant pushback for renewable energy we're all gonna feel the effects of the irreversible damage .

    How can Michig@n beat Ohio state? They don’t know they haven’t done it in 11 years? Meanwhile everyone is an expert about that too. They get just as upset, the fact is we can’t process information that we don’t wanna hear.
