- How do you train an aggressive dog to stop being leash-aggressive towards other dogs? Is my dog truly aggressive or are they just reactive? Dog trainer Tom Davis and fellow trainer Forrest Micke hold a seminar all the way down under in Sydney, Australia, where Tom discusses the difference between these behaviors, how to recognize them, and provides several methods to find a resolution.

Jackson nailed it at the start when he said other people don't know how lucky they are they can just pop a leash on and walk without having to think about it. This was such a good video and not enough trainers are prepared to show how easy it can be. The amount of times I have been told by trainers to keep my dog away from other dogs or just cross the street to avoid a dog has astounded me. Looking forward to more uploads like this of your time in Australia!
Bingo
Jackson has one beautiful dog!
I know you took a little bit of teasing here, but i really admire how you gave this owner space and compassion to confront their anxiety and embarrassment around the dog's behavior. I feel like theres a lot of pressure from some trainers to "be the alpha" and "dominate" the situation, which doesnt always address the root of the problem. You did an amazing job of supporting this owner with grace and kindness.
Thanks!
I know that "I could cry right now" feeling. I'm happy for all the dog owners who got to train with Tom and Forrest!
This is so amazing, I wish people who think a reactive dog is bad and the owners don’t care. This gives such a great picture of what us reactive dog owners are dealing with
I'm not crying it's just wet out... I hope that owner didn't see an audience, but a support group. We all understand. We're here for you. You will find the balance for your dog and she will learn and be better with time. Don't give up!
Love tjis!
Welcome to Australia,
Thanks!!
This video had me in tears, because I feel Jackson's pain to my core. I've had some phenomenal dogs and after adopting one of my foster puppies, who started showing reactivity signs at six months, life has not been the same. He had a crappy beginning with his first eight weeks of life in the shelter environment, and four days after having to let my ride or die go, (cancer) I brought the pitbull puppy home. There are no normal moments outside or sometimes even inside the house. It is miserable not being able to enjoy your dog, and give them a fulfilling life.
I hope Jackson went home and continued a healthy progression with his little girl. My goal is to make it to work with Tom and my guy, because I want to feel the same glimpse of hope that Jackson got here.
Great job, Tom and Forrest, you are changing lives.
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Australia is screaming out for trainers like you Tom. I wish you could set up a facility in every state. I know exactly how this guy feels. I've had dogs exactly like her and they also would've been dead if it wasn't for being with us. They've all passed on now, it was a hard road but I'm glad we gave them the best life possible.
Im here, willing and able to help!
Yes definitely 100% too many hot dog trainers I love the way you make us understand what is going on in the dogs mind and what we can do better as owners . I can’t wait for tomorrow! Swiss white lady 🦘🇦🇺✌️
Please come to Perth🙏
The combination of Tom explaining the physical aspect and Forrest breaking down the psychological aspect really paints the whole picture and gives you all of the information you need to be successful. Awesome video!
We thank yoU!
The dog “dream team” together! Lucky Australia! The bottom line of this and all your videos is HOPE! For dog owners who have exhausted their known possibilities and are ready to give up(which could have deathly consequences for their dogs)you provide the hope to make a new start with the tools and knowledge to continue on with their beloved dog. Thank you! I always learn something from your videos, Tom. They are so helpful, inspiring, appreciated and so well done👍🏻
I can't agree more. It's beautiful. I got teary eyed. 🥹
Where’s there’s light there’s hope. :)
So it was him all the time and we are a lots like him around the world. Thank you so much Davis for this essential lesson and message ! 🙏 🐾 🫂
Thanks for watching
Bloody amazing! I cried for you mate! So awesome to see our Aussie backdrop in your vids Tom, hope you all had a great experience! Wish I could’ve attended! 💜
Thanks so much!
My puppy is 6 months old and yesterday on her walk we got barked at by a dog behind his fence. She was hackled and started a woof but I was ready and able to redirect her. She did fabulous! I've been watching Tom for years now and feel so much more comfortable with training. Thanks Tom!
Tom and Forrest really are like a dynamic duo. They work so well together and both offer there combined experiences. Im so happy for Jackson. I hope he can go home and continue the work. Great video. 🤘❤️
Thanks so much, Glad you enjoyed it!
I could cry watching it. hope is what reactive dog owners need! we love you so much Tom, If you come to Vancouver I will be the first person to buy a ticket.. I'd love to work one on one with you 🙏 that would be a real dream come true
Awhhh that made me cry because I know just how that guy was feeling. . That little doggy. Go Yoko!! ( if that’s what she’s called. Sorry if not lol ) My dog is like that. She’ll react but inside she’s scared. All she knows how to do is defend before she gets hurt. She’s getting there with her training. Amazing. Well done all ❤xx
Same dog!
Fantastic video!! Love seeing videos on pitties since I have one. Love this so much, you can tell the owner is feeling soo much better about his situation with his dog. Very happy for both of them! We need more owners to care about their dogs and not give up on them!💯
Amazing work Tom!!👏🏻👏🏻
Oh man, I wish I could've seen you and Luke Evans work together while you were there.... The little dog you worked with is just adorable.... I'm so happy for her pawrent, that he finally got the tools he needed for her....
Not sure who that is but thanks for watching!
I love watching your calm confidence feed to the owners as they learn. Such a gift ❤
Damn dude, loving your videos so much already and then hearing some good old State Champs in them just tops it off haha. I wish I knew you were in Aus, can't wait til next time!
Ayyyeee!!!
The talk that the trainer in the red shirt (Forest I think?) gave about the nagging being associated with the stimulus is soooooo what I've done. Not worrying about the heel or the sit or using obedience to try to avoid reactions has been a key in making progress with Bowser and I had no idea until fairly recently when Tom told me to "pick my battle". I realized I was trying to fight multiple things at the same time and it has been unclear to my dog as well as reinforcing the tense energy that I was desperately trying to figure out how to diminish.
Great video, Tom, and well done with the Staffy. They can be quite a handful and need strong leadership. I hope the owner has much success with the skills he learned through your seminar.
You always break it down in such an easy to understand way.
Beautiful video! ❤
Thank you!!
Thank you for this video...This is exactly how my dog is and its heartbreaking.
Hope you’re enjoying Australia, it’s such a great place…love the Bunnings hats and sausages and sauce, 😂true Aus. Wish I could have hopped on the plane with my dog and come over from the West, looks awesome.
Same , I have just taken on a massive task with a reactive Mastiff whom was in the company of another kennel buddy and they've both been classed as dangerous dogs. We have made the decision with the old owner to split them up and after 3 was intense training by myself my Behemoth has changed a lot no not perfect but on the way. Most of the animals that are troubled seem to be feeding from the owners timid behaviours and this is where their troubles start unfortunately. Thankfully we have these great vids to learn from just chill and give clear indication for the dog to follow and enjoy the time together take away all the stresses and keep it simple.......Thanks for the great info people .
Its been incredible!!
Where do you live?
@tomdavisofficial why couldnt you come to south Australia 😢 and the real aussie slang for sausage and sauce is sausage and dead horse
@@tomdavisofficialthe SouthWest of Western Australia…..I will definitely catch up with Tom next time he comes! Will fly to wherever goes…….looks amazing!
when he said, "she'd be dead if it wasn't for you" i lost it. it's so sad but true what we see in the rescue dog world, especially throughout the states. thank you, team tom & team jackson!
I have been watching your videos i have missed one or two but i checked out the shop Thank You for putting No Bad Dogs on the front of the shirts and hoodies i wont have to buy one and wear it backwards now im so excited for it to go on my list
Thanks for wacthing!!!
Beautiful to watch! 🙌🙌🙌
Hope is a little pocket rocket! So pleased for Jackson unlocking some of what makes her tick, I hope Hope is up for daily walkies now! 💖💖
YES! SO incredible!
Really appreciate all your content. Makes me feel like I'm not alone in my training struggles.
Glad it helps you, Scott
So great, I had to cry as well. Thank you. For all that you are doing.
Thanks so much for watching.
We've just taken in a rescue that was absolutely petrified, very scared , very fear aggressive. Nobody would take her, over 5 years at the shelter . 5 weeks in and she's much improved, we can now put the lead on without fear of being bitten , she walks okay in the back garden, no more crazy pulling jumping around and furiously biting the lead.
I just know she's going to be a highly reactive dog when we finally venture out , through fear and the unknown.
We need to introduce her to things slowly and I'd love to be able to reduce her fears.
Any training to recommend in the back garden before venturing into the big wide world. Thanks
Hope this helps!
@@tomdavisofficial Thanks. Pretty much everything you post is a help. Hopefully we will get there, I just wish as quick as you do haha.
You and Forrest are awesome together
Thank!
I don't know what it was but this video brought a tear to my eye!! Tom and Forrest are the dream team!
So happy you liked it!!
Just walk. Love it. It's amazing much your academy has grown.
That's itt!!
Love the bunnings hat Tom!
Thank you for this video, I have learned a lot about my own dog from it.
Hope it helps you!
Oh my God Jackson says I could cry, I know that feeling 😛
This is my dog! Looks exactly the same except mine has a white patch on her neck. And same exact reactions and noises it's uncanny. I so badly wanted to attend this workshop but didn't have the money 😢. But this is great
Hope this helps, Pamela!
Really valuable video. It's so great to have the opportunity to test Yoko like that and see where she was actually coming from with her reactivity. Really happy for her owner, hope this turns his life around with her!
Fantastic video you guys!! Love it!! Nice to see forrest as well. Great job and thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching!
I love this... I've cried through this entire video.
🥺
My rescue dachshund is just like that. It’s very upsetting at times.
Hope this helps!
This was great thanks for sharing. I for one like seeing this kinda thing so please keep them coming.
❤️🇨🇦
Thanks for wathcing!
Beautiful ❤️
Thanks for watching!!!
Would have loved to have been there. Thanks so much for the upload. As always there's so much to takeaway from this.
Thanks so much!
Awesome video that's kinda like my doggie it's been 3 years but come along way with your great videos he's still reactive but getting better I've learned alot about doggie training from your great videos I keep faith and hope that one day I can actually know my 50 lb doggie isn't going to pull me anymore with confidence and hope and faith that all of your great videos will help in the future.
Hope this helps you!
Yes! That was awesome 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks!!!
Love these videos and especially State Champs!
I would love Tom Davis to give some feedback on Daddy Dog Trainer. Somehow his videos showed up and I've seen a few. This guy looks like he's hurting the dog. Tom has always been the best trainer I've seen.
I have a tough rescue terrier named Rocky have had him 6 months and i heard this dog dad’s frustration 4 years of trouble walking in a dog friendly neighborhoodlike my town in MA (EVERYONE HAS ONE AND AN OPINION) i feel that way so often shamed and embarrassed BUT i know what we are working on and how FAR WE HAVE COME. I HAVE HOPE. And my Rocky boy would be dead if not for me so I WORK ON our skill sets and see him for the quirky smart playful handsome little fellow he is and look forward to e-collar training soon and i am addicted to your videos and THANK YOU. Rocky watches with me! Doesn’t learn from watching but I DO and then we go practice a bit before our snuggles. He’s a good little man but was a shelter pup and has trauma. I have hope.
Thanks for watching , hope this helps!
Good day mate
lolol
Wow I wish you came to Brisbane, Australia as well! Didn’t even know you were in Sydney! That’s amazing.
Lol I am this weekend
@@tomdavisofficial Omg! Of course you are haha. Ive had a rough few weeks so haven’t been online much so I totally missed it! Guessing it’s fully booked already so I will have to watch it on here☺️ Super grateful that you came here to help others. Hope your able to enjoy the sights also while your here working.
Great video thanks
Thanks for watching!
Would love to see you in Birmingham England!
Same!
❤I like this, Tom because I know your good and you can I been watching most your video. Mostly me too ..how uncertain I feel my dogs mirror me. Can catch feel it. All insecurity, lucky your there that dog can be good corrected, and change too..thank you for this video.
Thanks for watching!
I know all too well that anxiety that has built up from so many bad experiences with their dogs and this was really one that hit hard with me and I completely can relate to jackson. My anxiety around dogs right now is out of this world and it's never coming down to a normal level and it's from so many bad experiences breakingup fights that I'm constantñy expecting every person and safety protocol to fail amd im not getting braver! Im becoming apprehensive and avoiding. I brought in a foster dog and I should have known that I didn't have what the dog needed in my home because I already have my hands full and then my uncle moved in with his dog aggressive dog and he's elderly and disabled so now this dog is on me except for has an owner that won't pay attention to the rules and boundaries and how things need to be handled so it's a constant paranoid because I have to depend on other people to do the right thing and it's safe to say that's never the case. When it was just my dog's we didn't have all this chaos and there was no fighting and now I'm on edge constantly living in a minsdset of survival.
Very good music choice right at the first second haha
ayeee! Thanks
Dafuq am I doing tearing up over a dog training video? 😢😊
Haha 😂
I wish I could have booked in time for the Brisbane one
I LOVE your videos Tom
I really wanted you to work with my fathers Service Dog who had been attacked by both human and dogs
Sometimes he is fine other times he is not
I personally think he should be retired
Also my dad is a veteran
As a trainer myself and his daughter I feel like he needs someone else to help his dog, as I have tried.
But I hope in the future you do come back
Also when are you at Master Pups in Brisbane (dates)?
You can still come and watch and ask questions!
@@tomdavisofficial We just might😄
Wow this is my story with my 2 year old Dutch Shepherd. I get up at 4:30 am walk her for an hour to try and avoid other dogs. She wasn’t that way when I first got her .However due to several negative experiences with other dogs she has become more aggressive towards all dogs. She also engages in fence aggression with my neighbour’s 2 large aggressive dogs. She has improved a little but walking her can still be a nightmare. Unfortunately I threaten her every day that I will never ever walk her again but she still gets no less then 2 hours of walking a day.😊 Still I totally understand how this man is feeling. I have learned to be very observant, go the other way , walk behind buildings, use park cars as shields, go up people’s driveways and walk as fast as I can pass other dog.😳
Hoppe this video helps, thanks for watching!
Been watching your videos I know I got this 🤝🏾💯 been thinking about gettin a puppy but how many weeks can you start to train em at that’s Tha only thing I don’t know
Haha he just described my rescue GSD. He is silent, constant, relentless, and really trying to kill other dogs😂 the only thing I've found that works is a nose halter attached to his choker. Huge difference for me as he weighs a good 90 pounds and I'm about 120.
Vancouver island next? Please hahaha
Oh I wish you came to QLD. My girls could really use your training
Yep nevermind, I just saw you were here. I missed it😢
I wish you were coming to south Australia. I would love you to work with my boy, I know you use different tools as I have watched may of you r videos, but I think we are not around prong collars, what do you recommend ?
Same!
So I have a kelpie and he acts the same way as was said in the video people don't know how lucky they are to be able to just go for a walk or take the dogs anywhere without a fight
What I got out of this video I just basically go for walks and if another dog is around we try and just keep walking and I don't pull on the leash to correct the dog's behaviour and just basically correct it buy walking? Am I right to have the dog muzzled aswell
Can someone tell me what is the exact breed of the dog? My initial thought is that it's an American Pit Bull Terrier, but looks too small to be one.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier, imho.
Staffy mostly
I thought prong collars were banned in Australia? No wonder the poor guy couldn’t get the help he needed when the Aussie government bans the types of tools that can help dogs like this. Good work Tom.
Just certain states in Aus, their importation is banned too, but we get around that as well. Some rules are just made to be broken 😂. There aren’t enough resources to enforce the rules anyway. There are people working hard to keep the tools and in most states they are being sensible about it. The RSPCA has lost its way in this regard, which is unfortunate.
Forrest is cool man
He is!
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!
Oioioi😆
Great video. Idk if you'll see this but I would love if you could make a video about wolves ❤
Edit - because I saw one of your old videos where you were with wolves. I love wolves and wolfdogs. Just would love to hear you talk about them, in any context
my dog headbutts fences over and over again to get to a dog does that mean it is real aggression or could it still be fear
“Jeezus Cryceess”
Some videos have language bleeped out but not all. Wondering how I can know before watching if it's been edited for bad language. Family friendly would be great. Loving these and finding these videos helpful. Just don't like some of the language.
Wait, what about that crate worked?
First!!!
yeppp!
Admire and respect you so much as a trainer, Tom and think you are a great person. Please don't use the "f" word. So offensive to me. Thank you. God bless you.
Thanks for watching. “So offensive to me” think about how selfish that is to comment on a public forum with free 4K training tutorials.
I find it hard to be optimistic. There are dog trainers, and dog videos with links to paid courses everywhere and peope spending 1000's of dollars and months or years of time seeing little to no results.
We have a reactive dog, we're working on our 2nd training course, paid of obviously... and the only thing we've fixed for our shelter rescue are things we've worked on separate from class. Leash pulling, teaching and reinforcing basic commands, etc.
We're seeing effectively zero improvement or results from the designed course around leash reactivity and home reactivity.
In other words, these feel good videos with links to paid online programs are great to get people to like and post positive comments but in the end, for those of us really struggling with these real issues in the real world... I think many of us aren't finding many paths to success and just throwing money away.
Watch Larry Krohn … he uses play to change the dogs demeanor … 👍
I have
Pretty sure you would have researched this but
NSW: ecollars illegal, prong collars legal
QLD: ecollars legal, prong collars illegal
It's ridiculous. Arbitrary. But it's the law. Just fyi.
I live in the states!
It's weird, I see this dog that wants to fight other dogs and I have the opposite problem. My dog would try to friendly to another dog attacking her or me....a real pussy of a dog. When another, even smaller than her gets heavy with her she goes to her back. I have had her since she was 2 months old, a pure bread airedale....sort of disappointed
You have a submissive dog, not a dominant one. Showing submission to a more dominant dog is how a dog survives. It’s her nature, so please accept that.
