Wendy, it's all Psychology. It's simple conditioning that takes: Consistency, Repetition, Timing, Technique, Confidence, and more than anything... PATIENCE.
Psychology is involved in every aspect from dealing with the owner(s), which tends to be the most difficult part of Dog Training, to the Dog itself.
Believe it or not, the techniques utilized for Dog training are very similar/same as those used with humans too. Most people who have good dogs, also have good relationships with those around them. Those who have issues with their Dogs, tend to have issues with their Kids, Spouses, etc. I've seen it my whole life.
The next real issue is there are those who can "get it" and are willing to learn and apply what's being taught, then there's individuals like the lady in this video who already has "their way" and are much, much, more difficult to work with.
She came to him for help and then she's gonna tell him how it all goes. I've experienced this as well.

I myself am so happy our trainer suggested we switch, we are no longer the ones walking completely out of control on the street. Now we are the ones being complimented on how well our dog walks (actually, he now struts down the street, head up high chest pushed out, full of confidence).

Recently had covid and pneumonia, so have been relying on friends to walk my dog since I can't do an hour of walking and letting him smell all the smells. 3.5yo shepherd and maybe belgian sheepdog mix I got from the shelter at the end of August. One friend was gently skeptical about using the prong collar and asked if I'd tried a harness. No stinking way- at the first sight of a squirrel, or the little yippee dog on the retractable leash who is allowed to run up to him growling and barking, and he'd be off and running (but has improved very much). Told her he needed it for now and how to use it, and pretty sure she was happy to have had it. Tools, consistency, and structure make a happy dog. He has made many human friends throughout the neighborhood, and loves when they stop to chat and give him love, but knows how to sit and have good manners about it.

I have binge watched all of your vids and I am so thankful! He’s been improving with his aggression/separation anxiety. I now worry less of him tearing out of his crate and wanting to attack others through his obedience training and the slip lead! I have also tried hiding his treats for him to look for! It has helped tremendously! I remember nearly crying because the dog trainer told me that she could not work with me due to his aggression and that it was best to put him down. It’s upsetting to see people not take advantage of the equipment that has been invented. I used the Hermès prong collar on both of my pittie mix doggos. My neighbor uses a harness to walk his reactive lab. You have no idea how many times that dog has lunged at my dogs and I. The dog even lunged at my 10 year old brother. I see them walking the lab and they have no control. The dog always ends up on his hind legs pulling the owner. I told them to check out your videos to hopefully help them. Well trained dogs wouldn’t need a prong collar. If you have to make your dog uncomfortable to get them to do what you want, it’s not trained. It’s avoiding. A well trained dog can walk on any type of harness or regular collar that doesn’t cause pain. The guy you talk about doesn’t need a prong collar-he just needs change his perception about humans out in public. This can be done by keeping the dog a safe distance away, as close though as you can get without him reacting badly. When he doesn’t react or reacts in a calm manner like looking at the other person with a relaxed body language he gets praise. Then try to get even closer without reaction. If they react negatively they’re too close and you walk the other way until they’re calm, and try again. Imo a prong collar is a quick “fix” that is completely inappropriate. I’ve put one on my arm and pulled…it doesn’t feel good! We’d all stop pulling too to avoid hurting. Avoidance isn’t always meaning they learned. It also can mean they haven’t learned anything more than “pulling hurts”. But teach a dog to not pull in the right way, they will not pull because pulling gets them nowhere as opposed to not pulling because he knows he’ll get what he wants.

If you need to cause your dogs physical pain for them to behave you completely failed as their handler. This type of equipment meant to choke, scare or hurt dogs when they pull, bark or do whatever they are not supposed to is pure animal cruelty and shows how lazy or uneducated their handler is. Train your dog! Teach them alternatives to unwanted behavior and work on a good, positive bond instead.

What a great trainer.. This gave me something to work on on my Blue Heeler. She's always been 'scared" of new things. She minds quite well, but on a leash if she gets scared she starts to pull. I use a slip lead, but you gave me some very good pointers. This is not my first heeler, my fifth and she's quite mellow but strange noises get her. I feel sadly for this woman that isn't listening or willing to change. A sad situation and it's not the dogs fault. You have wonderful patience..

Watching from rural north Florida. This is the first video of Tom’s that made me wish I could step in and shake the owner and say “pay attention”. Hopefully the male handler will continue working with the dog, using what he is learning and make a difference for this poor pup who is such an emotional mess. He’s a beautiful and obviously intelligent dog who is begging for help. You can tell the owner loves the dog so hopefully she will get on board and try something new for the sake of her dog’s mental health.

That when you start saying to these hard- headed people, “hey your are fu***** up and your dog is feeling the sh***.” He was so nice to this old lady that didn’t really want his help and just a therapy session!!! I hope her dog is doing better now because it is never ok for dog or humans to be in a highten state forever.

Loved the analogy of leash signals to hands on reins. In riding, we call that little brief tug a half halt…it's basically a cue that means "Pay attention! Keep it together/I'm about to ask you for something." It works with dogs too! I hope there are some progress videos of this Aussie…as an Aussie owner myself, I sure would like to see this lovely dog have a better structured relationship with his people so he can unlearn that anxiety. Thanks for your videos, they're great!

I know this video is a year old... but I totally feel for the dog getting so upset and NEEDING to make sure its remaining owner is ok. I am a disabled US Army Vet. I have a partially crushed spine, and though I can walk, I can't consistently walk. Some days are better than others. Every time I am walking more than 15 or 20 feet total, I have a specially trained Service Dog there with me to help me when my balance goes wonky and I randomly can no longer stand unassisted. One day my Service Dog and I were at the VA hospital. My dog at the time was still young, not fully completed with her training, but as a 2 1/2 year old Great Pry, she was an absolute natural at sort of using her body to lean against mine when my balance would just not be there. She saved me from so many potential falls - any one of which could have cost me my life as my spinal cord is that fragile. Any fall was known to put me in the hospital for several days while doctors started at me to make sure my spine would restabilize.
But on this day, as we were walking down the hall, my dog was attacked. It was 'just' a Crocker Spaniel, who though it was wearing a Service Dog vest, clearly did not have the proper training. My dog, all 130 pounds of her, leapt away, startled as the little dog bit her repeatedly on the front legs. Luckily my dog was not actually harmed... but we can't say as much for me. I was knocked to the ground where the pain left me screaming for several minutes. Other people had to step in to rescue my poor dog, who was horrified and standing over my body, not allowing the small dog near me.
I recovered and managed to avoid a hospital stay, but my dog was never the same. From that day forward, she never allowed another dog within 10 feet of me. We tried to reassure her that I would be ok, but training that fear that I would be hurt out of her, when her job in life was to keep me from harm, never worked. She had to be retired and lived for the next eight years as my husband's very spoiled pet dog.

Happy Holidays, guys! Good to see how you tackle high anxiety like this - I know far too many owners like these guys who need some help and do mental gymnastics to explain their dog's misbehaviour. Our family used to be one of those! I wish we had resources like this back then, and I'm really glad it's out there now.

Excellent lesson on this one. It is so hard when a person wants to project onto the animal. For both them and the animal. How lucky are we that a dogs default is to protect and take action. And how blessed all they need is structure to get that confidence! Work dogs gotta work!
