not to mention UEFAs complete disregard for fan safety, that Champions league final in Paris where they couldn't give two shits about the Liverpool fans getting into the stadium and putting them at a fan park in probably the most dangerous location. Uefa are absolute scum. Corrupt wannabe politicians skimming off the top and putting nothing into football. Imagine being so corrupt that you're seen as morally inferior to the Super League puppet masters in Saudi. If we want fan safety then it's a no brainer, the Saudis have shown that they know how to put on events that consider the fans as a factor, unlike Uefa who see fans as nothing more than plebs who should accept what they're given.

The main point they missed is that the big prem clubs have zero need to join this. They already have the best league product by far (say that as a BL fan). The Italian and Spanish clubs can't stand that and that's why they want the Prem clubs in their competition. PL would be giving up it's dominant position by joining, with very little relative benefit (additional money will just drive up wages and transfer fees and further widen the gap to smaller teams). Super league is short term money grabbing without thinking about the long term health of the game.

@@DR650-x2j Real Madrid and Barcelona are an exception because they are so huge globally. But the Presidents of both clubs have made public statements that they want a new European competition because they just cannot keep up with revenue growth in the Premier League. The USA market is falling in love with the Premier League - and sports money in the USA makes even the Premier League look poor, so Real and Barca are thinking in 5, 10, 20, 30 years the Premier League will bank as much money in the USA as the NBA does, then not even the mighty pull of Real or Barca could compete with that, so we need a new European competition to protect ourselves.

In this case Aston Villa could win the Premier League and then enter the third tier of European Competition instead of going to the top tier (right now the Champions League) this new setup just protects the current big clubs, so they won't lose the big international games if the fall out of the Top4. Chelsea would likely be a "STAR-League" team even though they will end up mid-table in the Prem, no accountability for domestic leagues for the big clubs and their local fans.

For premier league teams, they have all the money and tv deals so leaving would be crazy. For all other domestic leagues, this is the only way of being able to get an even playing field in order to compete. As for the CL argument and not being able to compete for it when joining this potential new set up. My opinion is, the European cup died when the CL was adapted no longer permitting all the champions of their domestic leagues. Instead, rewarding 3 -4 teams from the big 5 leagues their place instead while making real champions play multiple qualifiers. The game will keep evolving and I don’t see the issue with this super league for leagues outside the premier league which is a monster in itself in relation to finance and global appeal.

Football is a sport and if there is a league inclusive to the clubs owned by the rich then why bother? Why try to progress your club in a normal way when the financial option of selling your club to the highest bidder is a much easier shortcut? Makes me respect the German model of fan ownership so much more. Formula One is boring when one team has a much faster car. I feel the same with football when certain teams are so much richer than others. For example Newcastle stank the league up for years and now suddenly they are supposed to be a big club because they are rich? They did absolutely nothing on the pitch to deserve this status. Yes they have a large fanbase but it still makes me uncomfortable that you can buy your way to the top simply by letting someone who's wealthy take a large stake of the ownership of your club.

Money driven change is not always good change. Simon doesn't appear to see the bigger cultural and social picture that emerges in sport when it is purely profit driven. Football clubs emerged as social institutions dedicated to the game (not business) of football and are now in the process of full transformation into global brands. Eventually they will become as irrelevant to real life as any detached organisation dedicated to a global strategy of profit. The end result will be a boring spectacle of extreme wealth that will jar with ordinary lives and to which entry will become increasingly difficult. Ordinary fans will only watch on TV - they already do with the PL which is too expensive for most - as the stadium will be filled with corporate guests and wealthy fans like the Saudi stadiums in the current World Club Cup. By this logic why should Liverpool play at Anfield at all? Why not relocate to Saudi Arabia or the US? Why not fill the stadium with extras posing as fans like the "fans" at the Qatar World Cup? Illusion will replace reality in football if it makes more money.

Pretty short-sighted analysis from Simon - only looking at it from a business owner perspective. The reality is that aside from having no meritocracy, a Super League would price average fans out of viewing and attending games. Every match would be made a PPV and only sheiks and toffs would be able to afford match tickets because of the value of the league and the games being played in the most expensive stadiums around Europe. It would be another example of the super rich making football their playground. The Premier League is already the best product in football, the games are usually always fast and furious, and there is always an underdog that scalps big opponents.
I can't imagine anything more dull than watching Man Utd vs Real Madrid or Liverpool vs Juventus 6 times a year with no risk or incentive in the games

The truth is that the SL would have zero effect on clubs like Everton/Palace/Etc - the PL would have run as normal, the revenues would have continued to pour in AND those clubs would even have an opportunity to play CL or EL midweek as the bigger clubs would be off playing SL. Which is better than what they have in the current system.
The point of the SL is a vehicle to reign in the PSG/City/Newcastle machine - you want to play at the top table? Then you play by our rules and stop cheating FFP and if you don't then you will be out. UEFA had their chance to stop City/PSG and they failed.

At the moment this looks to be driven by Real, Barca and a few Italian clubs and without much interests from many big European clubs including those in the EPL who are happily enjoying the riches the the 'biggest league in the world' produces and have little need to join a Euro Super League.
However if the Saudis get involved in this, I fear the worst.
Money talkes and you only have to look how the Saudis have gobbled up Boxing and Golf with their billions of Riyals.
With Saudi money involved I can see a trickle of clubs signing up for the Euro super league becoming a torrent.
The same thing happened in the summer when big name players already paid extremely handsomely chose to turn their back on the highest tiers of football for a career in a wretched Saudi league simply because they could earn more money than they could ever hope to spend.
And thats the players, who you would hope would have some pride and love for football and perhaps ignore the filthy riches form Saudi Arabia.
If players aren't sentimental enough to turn down the money, we can be damn well sure club owners won't be.

Make the Club World Cup more like the International World Cup and dispose of these league cups that no-one actually cares about. Have the teams from the top 15 leagues who finish in the top 5 of their season qualify for group stages similar to the World Cup and have it every 2 years. Residents in all countries have favourite teams in multiple leagues. Imagine if you had the home teams fans + travelling away support + the fans who follow that team from a different league but live in the city it's being played in. It would equal huge crowds and bring importance to this tournament. The money generated for home clubs from these crowds would be great too and much needed for them.

If nothing else, FIFA and EUFA will be forced to take a serious/honest look at themselves. They chased money (that they corruptly misuse) just like the ESL is basically looking to do (solely Barcelona/Real Madrid). This whole notion that fans want to see their favorite clubs around the globe (conversations about ESL matches in USA) is bull. I would say this is more so the casual fan (i.e. Messi "its popular" casual fan not MLS fans) is who they reference when they make this argument. I'm perfectly fine watching my Everton on TV, Shalke 04 on Bundesliga highlights, etc. FIFA/UEFA reduce the fixture schedule with less teams, travel, etc. Who asked for more clubs in the club world cup? Who asked for the nations league? FIFA/EUFA are partly to blame for this from the beginning.

Simon is completely right. Jim is too blind to see that this can benefit other leagues. If teams like top 6 join the project. That means the teams like Crystal Palace will have more than ever chance to win a domestic title. Teams in Super League will have to travel a lot and will play a lot of games which lead to them sacrificing their Domestic performance. Which will lead to lot of rotation. So teams like Crystal Palace will have the chance to have their strongest XI every week while teams who fight in ESL will have to rotate more regularly. So this will actually lead to league being more competitive than ever. Specially if Champions League stay and you have both ESL and CL.
We all liked the Leicester winning season this gives you chance of seeing that more regularly so im all up for it.
And who cares if Saudis joins the ESL, football is global sport and their should be global league where the best from around the world compete, instead just waiting for World Cup every four years. So you got to be lying if you saying that you wouldn't actually be excited to see team like Boca Juniors and Man United play regularly.

Simon is exactly right. If it is setup as just the next league or leagues after winning promotion to them then I feel it would be fine. As long as you can get promoted to it and relegated from it.
Their is no difference from how the EFL has evolved, I'm sure in tue early days of football teams only competed against their neighbours for a time being and as it got more popular and transport got easier they started to compete against teams further out. Like maybe a northern team against a team from the south. The next logical step is a league of the best in Europe...

I think a lot of people are missing a bigger picture point. FIFA aside for the moment, UEFA isnrun by people who ONLY care about lining their pockets whixh also means protecting specific elite clubs so they can maintain the status quo.
There are minimal real peotections to guard against corruption, backroom deals. Appointments almost seem to be lifetime appointments.
UEFA has a duty of care to protect football and all Euro clubs as a governing body. Its not its job to protect 5 or 6 clubs but all clubs.
    Examples:
    #1: CL Competition
Clubs that fall out of CL go down to Europa. Why?
They didn't earn the right to remain so clearly its a way of protecting prize money for said big teams. The truth is football thrives when there are consequences and UEFA have watered it down for their own ends.
    #2: Prize Money
The astonishing difference between what clubs get in the Champions League vs Conference League is disgusting. Absolutely Champ L should be rewarded accordingly. But to make the Conference League prize money so small is contemptable. One is left with the thought that UEFA don't care about the grassroots of football and do not care about nurturing football.
