This is from another commenter, commenting on a different channel:
Guy kidnapped. Elliot Eastman explained about 10 days ago on a youtube video titled "i found my wife in the Philippines" @1:25. that he was recently loaned out 21k and collected 23.5k. and had sent 35k back out on the street to make more...and he spoke of how he was spending hundreds of thousands on their new sari sari store with solar system and starlink piso wifi... So he was openly advertising: 1. That he had, for the poor area, a year or two of a locals income in cash moving in and out 2. That he as an American was charging usury interest rates to local muslims (Quran bans interest) and 3. That heas an American was likely taking business from other local loan sharks in a red zone (really stupid thing to do).... The guy was so situationally unaware of the actual risks... He joked about being kidnapped....

Hi sir good pm. Am a retired military officer from iligan city. Mindanao is a very large island, much larger than Visayas. I think sir it is very unfair to us mindanaoans to always attach Mindanao to vlog or news items like this when it should have been like "..kidnapped in Sibugay".. Titles like yours puts our island in hot waters. Your viewers will see Mindanao in bad light as if the whole of Mindanao is a kidnapper's haven! Sibugay is just a small part of mindanao sir.. When somebody is kidnapped in a remote place in Luzon or Visayas, Luzon or Visayas is never mentioned. Instead, the place or Municipality or city where the crime happened is stated clearly..Our island is jeopardized and put in hot water everytime people attach the word Mindanao in crimes such as this. Hoping Sir you can correct this. I think the title should have been 'American kidnapped in Sibugay Province..

Absolutely agree with you officer sir we own property in Zamboanga Del Norte traveled all of Mindanao in our van my wife’s family form this area the young man was kidnapped and I still feel safer in Mindanao then in any other island. They forget to add that Manila Cebu Dumaguete all have had volient crime against Foreigners recently when Mindanaos last incident was over 8 years ago. I’m with you tired of seeing them say Mindanao making it looks as a whole. They quick to jump saying the terrorist the terrorist are behind this before knowing the facts. The police have already said they thinking this was done by somebody close to him as they have reported his wife left her Filipino boyfriend for him he was with a Filipina who conned him also. It was also said he bragged to all of them his family had money back home. I don’t believe for 1 minute the last kidnapping of a foreigner was in Dipolog over 8 years ago terrorist waited this long only somebody with no sense would believe they wait.

This is my personal opinion. True, there are violence in big cities like Manila, Cebu and Dumaguete but unfortunately most kidnappings of foreigners happen in Mindanao and other towns and cities. Personally as a Filipino, I don’t even try to venture in that part of the Philippines. You only get kidnapped once and your life will unfortunately be over.

The Americans that risk traveling and living in the Red Zone of the Philippines are ignoring US Government warnings. If any maliscious acts occur to them while in the Red Zone, they can’t seriously expect the USA Government to rescue them. Even other areas in Mindanao not in the red zone are considered risky and it is recommended to reconsider travel there. Just because you “feel safe” doesn’t mean you are safe.

As someone who has visited Manila, Cebu and Mindanao - the risk of getting kidnapped, shot or blown up in a bombing i Mindanao seemed to be a tiny fraction of the risk of getting killed in trafic in Manila. The differance is that the bombing, kidnapping or shooting in Mindanao is big news while another killed in trafic in Manila goes unnoticed.
Not saying that you should be careful if going to Mindanao, but also be very careful in trafic when in Manila and Cebu.

Does not occur in Manila or Cebu. There are safe places in MINDANAO we know, same can be said countries like Israel as well. But I would not live there either. Who commits kidnappings in MINDANAO? Guess it right, Muslims.

If you are from a Western nation the smart move is to simply stay away from Mindanao.
And if you are inclined to take the advice of TH-cam's expat vloggers on where it is safe to travel, ask them if they will help you if you get accosted in one of their safe places to visit.
P.S. If you are nevertheless wanting to see all of Mindanao, ask yourself why you want to go there. What is on Mindanao that's so compelling you just have to go there. Personally, I can't see any reason to visit any part of Mindanao island. There's nothing unique about it.

I am an American living in the Philippines and for security reasons I will not tell you where. I worked in Afghanistan as a contractor for years and while I was there I met several Filipinos working as security and several of them are from Mindanao. I told them that I want to come visit them where they live in Mindanao and every one them told me it was not safe. I asked them if it was just their town/city and they said the whole island. I told them were I was living and they said my island was safer but still keep my head on a swivel. So to this day I have never visited Mindanao or any island in the south and south west. It is just not the risk. I have been told that Davao and some other cities are safe but to me it is just not worth the risk. There are even some areas of Manila that arent safe but it all boils down to realizing your surroundings. If it seem shady get out. The humidity, heat and probably unsanitary surroundings he is probably being held in do not bode well for a good outcome. I do wonder if something else happened to provoke this as he obviously doesn't have a lot of money? Take care and I hope for a good outcome.

Hey Gio my dear friend, it is definitely a very unfortunate situation for that young man. You truly have to be very careful when you are going to locations like that. The US state department always issues travel adviseries and travel warnings to US citizens about which places are safe to visit or live when you travel abroad. And I'm wondering if he registered with the state department on where he would be staying. But just like you, Reekay, and Brian said, if you are in those locations, always keep a low profile. Always keep moving around, don't take the same route every time. I'm just praying that, this young man gets treatment for his gunshot wound to his leg, and he can be released soon. What an awful ordeal that him and his wife must be going through. Thank you Gio for sharing this video. Please stay safe brother 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏.

I worked as a civilian contractor at one of the small bases on Luzon in the 80's. In 1988 (I think), there was a rash of carjackings in the vicinity of Clark (Angeles City) and Subic (Olongapo). In fact one American was killed North of Subic when he resisted, after he was pulled over. A warning against travel between Clark and Subic was put out and Military were restricted travel. (But I was a DOD civilian, not military).
I worked 12 hours every day, 7 days a week and about every 3 months, we could take 3 days off, which I had requested just prior to the travel restrictions. Like an idiot, I ignored the warning and drove to Clark to do some shopping. Sure enough, halfway between Subic and Clark, 2 guys tried to pull me over and one held up a gun. Immediately I decided to outrun them as I had a pretty fast car and if they did get me pulled over, I'd toss my wallet and keys to them and run.
Anyway, they are chasing me down the National Highway for a couple miles weaving in and out of traffic, until I saw 2 Victory Liner buses going opposite ways. I timed my pass of the one going my way so that the carjackers could not make the pass. They almost had a head on with the bus while I sped away and I never saw them again. Anyway, I got away with my stupid move and the shopping trip that I really did not have to take.
Moral of the story, travel restrictions are there for a reason. You are risking your life when you ignore them. Thank God I got away with my bravado and stupidity.
    --------------------
Several years prior, I had a steady girlfriend of 3 years that came from Zamboanga. She asked me about going there but I Knew of State Department warnings against travel there, even way back then. Luckily I did not travel there.

    • @steveturansky9031

Another thing to consider. If there are bad actors operating in an area and travel warning are issued, many people will heed the warnings and stay away. That means the few that do go are more likely to be targeted.
It's like if you go to the beach and there have been shark sightings, your chances of being attacked are lower if there are 200 other swimmers. If all but 5 swimmers leave the water, your chances of attack go up drastically. It's so much smarter not to put yourself in harms way.

I told him it was "only $10". He had a medical issue a year back, lost his job and had limited funds. He looked at me and said "$10 might as well be a million for someone with no money". After 20 years, and 17 trips, i get the impression that the PI is not a place of freedom for foreigners. It is very difficult to do anything, unless you are filthy rich. Yes, i keep going back. I think there is something wrong with me. The only thing i like is the women, and the fresh air in the province.
