Honestly, Sam was being truthful. He would NOT have done what Dean did. Sam knows how to live without Dean. He's done it before. Sam won't take someone's own choices from them the way Dean did, selfishly, and Dean did it because he can't live without Sam. He doesn't know how to. I believe they are "soul-mated" brothers, which explains why their relationship is so difficult. Those are my theories, anywho.
