      Our library has educational kits. It is a box with all you need for a unit. Maybe check out a few more books and you are done. We have used human body, human brain, frog life cycle, microscope and they have lots more. Also board games. I have used the ones I want to buy but are too expensive. We can try a game and decide if it is worth buying it.

    I highly recommend reading the book "The Call of the Wild and Free". I have been homeschooling for 5 years now and just read this book. It has changed my mindset so much and I can see the difference in our school day once applying some of the principles.

    Remote learning or home school, plan self care activities with your kids so they aren't constantly in front of a screen. I had my high school student make a bucket list and we are helping him work through. 💚

    For any new homeschollers: 2 month rule. It takes two months to get used to a schedule. You will have tears, tantrums and plenty of "i dont wanna!"'s. But STICK TO YOUR CHOSEN ROUTINE!!!! Just when the 2 month mark comes around, youll notice kids accepting the new norm and your life will become easier. Its all about staying strict for the first two months. Trust me, my oldest has to homeschool due to his special needs(since before covid) and when my youngest, perfectly adapted to public school routine, was thrown in thanks to covid....they were both the same. Two months before life became routine. And they cannot be more different from each other. Two months. Promise

    Jordan, I think you are doing awesome with the homeschooling. I'm in my 13th year of homeschooling. You asked for tips--
    1) Regardless of your education or experience you are more qualified to be in charge of your kid's education than anyone else because you are the mom and you love your kid more. Period.
    2) Farming out your least fav subjects is a great idea and I have done it many times.
    3) Kids hardly learn anything in school. Honestly how much do you remember? So if you don't "keep up" with the schools, or "get behind" it SO DOESN'T MATTER.
    4) Everyone has their own learning style and that's ok. I have kids that only want to do language arts for weeks, and then they switch to science or history or writing for a month. And then I have kids that do a little of everything everyday.
    5) Listen to audio books, it totally counts as school.
    6) There is so much less wasted at home, a kinder kid only needs about a half hour a day, a high schooler 3-4 hours.
    7) We have never had a homeschool room. I think it would drive us crazy. My kid's do school in their room, or on the couch or with me in my bed, or at the table, or in the car.

    I took an old shelf and stocked it with the kids stuff and put it in an unused nook. I had everyone charge their tablets in the same place each day. I also bought portable desks (five kids five desks). We did a tidy each morning, took out the tables and the kids took them to their designated places and they did their school work. It worked really well. So it wasn't a room but it was special stuff and designated places and a designated time each day. Then everything was packed away very easily and voila, loungers and dining room back to normal.

    Hi Jordan,
    Welcome to the world of homeschooling! It is a glorious time that is often the good, the bad and the ugly all within about 10 minutes, but I wouldn't trade it at all for the time I have gotten to spend with my family! I am celebrating my 21st year this year!
    I LOVED that you said get help...I LOVE partnering with other moms who are passionate about a subject and introducing my children to that enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is often contagious! I would add too, not just paid/bartered help for subjects, but veteran help with suggestions, issues, etc. You do not need to make the same mistakes we all did.
    My homeschool hero, Diana Waring, talks about making schooling relational. I wish I would have focused so much more on that in the beginning than academics.
    I LOVE Read Aloud Revival with Sarah Mackenzie...such a great resource for booklists and I absolutely love her podcasts.
    We have an AWESOME Homeschool Consignment store fairly close to us. They are an absolute TREASURE TROVE of knowledge and help! If you have one nearby, they will be invaluable! Plus, it is a great way to consign the things you are done with/get new things on your wish list.
    DO NOT HESITATE to get rid of something that isn't working for your child. No matter how much it cost. Between different learning styles, modalities, intelligences, etc. it might be just the thing needed for success for your child.
    Allow your children to go off and pursue their curiosities...one of my favorite quotes is, "What we learn with delight, we never forget."
    Thanks for your tips too! An old dog can sometimes learn new tricks!

    Another great way to make a school space is to use a tri fold board (science project board) to create a little cubicle for your child. It can easily be out away. It helps with distractions. And you can even display schedules, resources or zoom IDs. You can pick them up at the dollar store... Even better! One of my biggest challenges as a remote teacher for 30 students in grades 1-8 is teaching the parents how to support their children. The kids of course need some help with organizing their day and prioritizing assignments however curriculum these days are often built to spiral which requires “under teaching” topics and moving forward and then the topic will come again later. This is done to give students many opportunities to work on a concept over time which eventually leads to much better skill development than learning something once and having to retain it. The problem though is that parents are often coming from a learning background that is quite different and then want to keep working until their kid fully understands the concept on that first lesson. Essentially packing in 4 lessons of work but then they feel like the workload is too much and everyone is overwhelmed and frustrated. Then those subsequent lessons seem repetitive and unnecessary. As an educator, we know parents are not all prepared to be in these roles. We weren’t prepared to put you in these roles. Please collaborate with us and communicate with us kindly so we can best figure out how to be a team in teaching your child. I can not stress enough, no educator went to school and learned how to do remote teaching or learned how to teach parents to support teaching in this way. Many of us are working loads of extra hours trying to figure out how to teach in this new format in the most successful way possible. Know that we are trying and that we may need to try a few different things before we figure out what works best for you and your family. We need your patience, understanding and support.

    We are in our 4th year homeschooling, if I could give one piece of advice, it would be to keep it simple. We all sit at the kitchen table together and work on schoolwork. We do history, science, art etc as family lessons. We use a curriculum that is open and go, and affordable, AND caters to all learning styles so it works for all my kiddos- The Good and The Beautiful. We read aloud together a lot, and we make sure to take the time to get outside and explore. Hang in there all you new homeschool moms and dads-this year is hard-but homeschool really is a beautiful experience.

    I've been homeschooling 12 years and love the freedom, flexibility, and extra quality time I get with my 6 kiddos! :) I've always used a block schedule in our homeschool but buying your Productivity Planner has been a game changer for me. I adore you to pieces, Jordan, and am soooo grateful you share your light, wisdom, and laughs with the world. Best homeschool advice: 1.Look to God (or your higher power) for impressions on your individual kiddos. They have different needs, and you as their mom or dad, knows them best. 2) Find a community of like minded people to learn with. Co-Ops are the best! 3) Get support! Join the homeschool facebook group for your area to find out about free or discounted field trips, class, activities, plus info on grants like My Tech High, which can even help pay for a regular tutor. And 4) Schedule in alone time to rest. Every morning we bust out school, and then my kids can build legos or kiwi crates in the afternoon, while I take a quick nap or fold laundry while listening to my fave podcasts.

    I wish we had a bigger space to designate solely for schooling, but we rent so that’s a no for us. We use the dining room table and found a way to store everything in a cube storage and metal cart we already had. We opted to privately homeschool instead of staying with the school district after the first round of lockdowns, and it honestly was the best decision I think we’ve made thus far for our eldest. It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, and I love getting involved in the curriculum choice and lessons. We use Masterbooks and I’m so thankful that there are zero screens involved! Our favorite resource is teacher pay teachers and Pinterest. There are tons of supplemental worksheets on there for every lesson we do and a ton of fun arts and crafts ideas!

They have really amazing teachers, you stream their classes online or watch the DVDs and use books for their assignments and projects. My 9 year old can do it mostly on her own and even help the younger kids get their videos and paper work set up so I can focus on other things and just help them as needed and check/file their work. 😁

I will say, I was in 5th grade when Common Core was implemented, and I can honestly say it's one of the worst things that's ever been invented. Focuses too much on application and less on concepts

    Engage New York is a completely free math curriculum that many school districts use across the country that can be found online for FREE! I always mention it to parents because it’s common core and has answer pages.

    Ma Shaa Allah! I am a teacher and this video is AMAZING! I really love how you and your husband have really made the educational time and teaching from home an important responsibility of yours instead of complaining about your children's teachers! It is extremely difficult for teachers to engage their students that are at home learner's and student's do not get the best quality education this way, we know that, it's not our fault. Thank you for STEPPING UP!

    Thanks for the video! I don't have kids yet but I know many who do and I try to absorb any info I can in case I have the opportunity to offer up ideas! Even if these aren't available options for some, sometimes just seeing what other people are doing helps create more ideas for a 'custom' routine or set up!
    Happy to see you've all found what works for you, and also, grateful to hear about the things that *did* *not* work because I'm certain others will find it helpful as well!
    Happy Home Schooling! 😘😘

      When we feel stress buildup, we build a pillow mountain. We lay down yoga mats, then sofa cushions, stuffed animals, pillows, and cover them all with blankets to make a large mountain of soft. Then we take turns diving in. It's the best. The kids (ages 2-7) giggle for days. Sometimes at night we role play and have them pretend to be us, and we pretend to be the kids and they have to put us to bed - that is hysterical! I've never laughed so hard in my life. And playing Barbies - one time we found a Barbie horse in the hallway with Chelsea a couple feet behind, so the plot became the pony ran off with her and Daddy Ken had to come rescue them on Barbie's motorcycle. I find letting them lead pretend play is great fun at these ages and great for letting my inner managing editor off the hook. Let improv take the lead in my brain. It seems silly but just 20 minutes of this or creating backyard dirt jump ramps for toy monster truck rally games has helped me come up with simple answers to complex problems and helped me keep things in perspective in this upside down world. Plus, it helps the children feel valued, enjoyed, and cherished on their own level, too. They'd rather have those times from me laughing with them than a "great job" or "nice work" on their homework or chores any day. It's like the golden acorn in our goofy nut-house.

    Teaching textbooks for math is a fave of my kids. They love doing math. Its online, $40ish per yr i think per kid. I dont have to grade. A tip as a homeschool mom is to trach subjects like science and history family style/across grades, just give them diff assignment according to their age. My kids and i are learning about countries all over the world together n really loving it.

    Hi Jordan!
    I’m the creator of The Delightful Homeschool Moms Group and I wanted to give you a quick reassurance that the first year of homeschooling is never a good representation of what it will become for your family if you continue.
    Homeschooling does not need to be expensive.
    Learning doesn’t just have to happen at a scheduled time at a designated location in your home.
    Each of your children was made differently by God, on purpose. You don’t need to worry about “keeping up” with the expectations per grade of a traditional school... you can be free to allow that child to develop at their pace. In time their natural talents and abilities will shine through and because you are homeschooling you will be able to allow them the time to pursue those giftings.
    It really is a wonderful thing!

    As a homeschooler I just want to say that schedules work really well for some people like me, but others really like doing school on the couch or outside and they don’t like to set a schedule. So if that’s you don’t try to force a schedule on your family... it’ll just set you up to fail. Homeschooling can be very freeing so figure out what works for you. There are tons of Homeschooling you tubers that do it all different ways! Homeschooling is not one way or the highway.... if you figure out your way it’ll be amazing! -Lindsay

    One of my relatives linked up with a few of her friends to hire a teacher virtually who meets with their kids. Kind of like a small cohort of 5-6 kids. They are all around the same age and the teacher helps guide each student. It’s nice and it didn’t cost my cousin a ton of money.

    Get support from other homeschool parents. The BIGGEST access I have in my pocket is a Facebook group. There I can vent, ask questions, get tips from veterans parents, leads on places to get discounts at museums/attractions (which there is so many places that offer homeschool discounted admission).

    Thanks for sharing! Every child and parent is different so give each other a break in the form of patience and laughter when it comes to distance learning/ home schooling. I recommend teaching/ learning in the morning. Many students suffer from the afternoon slump so they may not be as entitled to learn in the afternoon or be as motivated as they might be in the morning. Just something to consider. Also, try scheduling a supervised online group study session with your kids fellow classmates. Obviously get the classmates parent’s permission then schedule it and make sure at least one adult is supervising the group study session. This will give some relief to parents and put the responsibility of studying a certain concept or subject on each student. This should only be done when concepts have been taught and practiced for a reasonable amount of time and when it’s time to study for a quiz/ test. This will allow students some independence but the supervising adult can make sure those select students are not asking time goofing off. This can be traded off between adults/ parents from week to week or whatever tests are around the corner. Good luck!🙂

    As a veteran homeschooler I have to say, you dont need a special space or room for homeschooling. If you have 8 kids it sure will be more necessary. But we homeschool at the dining room table. We have two bins. But I only have one student. Keep it simple.

    • @s.a3099

    • @swansonseven2851
      @swansonseven2851 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To be fair she did kind of say that. When my big kids were little we used to meet at the table but it was a pain to clean up for every meal. I love having a dedicated space. But you definitely don’t need one. For many years I just loved having it for the sake of having a place to stash and organize it all. I still love it for that. My teens mostly school in their rooms. And my younger kids meet me in the school room for awhile each morning and spread out and then put everything back at the end of the day when they are done.

    • @mswilson8888
      @mswilson8888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree here. I don't think you need anything special to designate "learning time" because in our home, I would hope all time is learning time.

    • @katihutchins9485
      @katihutchins9485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, but I think it depends on your schooling style. I don’t want to homeschool and mimic public school, so that means I love to school outside, on the couch, at the table, at the park, wherever! But some mamas want their homeschool to mimic public school in having a set time, set space, etc.

    As a homeschool mom for 6 years now I have a few things to add...
    1) we homeschool at the dining room table. It takes structure, yes, but there's nothing wrong with the dining room table. We have a deep closet that holds all our supplies and I got a 3-tier ikea cart that we put all our daily things in and we can wheel it to the table and wheel it back when we are done.
    2) if you're not homeschooling because of covid but because this is your family's long term goal, then do not do school at home. Do homeschool! It's a vague concept that took me three years to figure out but it's true.
    But don't get me wrong... I LOVE Jordan! She has helped me so much. Homeschool mom, yes. Productive in anything else, no! Lol
