Just a little tip, I haven’t seen anyone mention in the comments. At the end of the back to school season when notebooks are $.50 instead of $2.00 go and stock up for the next school year. Yes, you don't have an exact list but buy the basics: notebooks, pencils, pens, pencil case, a new binder, and even a new backpack. My family has always done this and has saved so much money just by thinking ahead. Hope this helps someone save a few dollars 😃

I absolutely love that you are teaching your kids to shop within a budget and what they need. These kids didn't get brand names and guess what, they lived! I am so happy watching capable kids!
When my mother took me shopping, I would always get as much as I could! She never told me about a budget. Fast forward to credit card debt (working on it) as an adult. 🙄

@@amanboparai2360 The only bougie (Nike, Addias, Puma, etc) clothing my daughter gets is 1. Used or 2. Gifts because I refuse to pay full price for something my 10 month old will grow out of quickly. She's at the age where she doesn't wear through her stuff.
@@Bookworm5589 That's fair :) I personally never grew up around branded clothing (payless shoes all the way, it broke my heart when it closed) I was happy with whatever my parents could afford and now that I'm older I hold the same values to this day the most expensive thing (clothing wise) I own are timberlands and my winter jacket because I noticed my winter shoes would wear down super fast and winter in Canada is not fun ... but then again I justify my purchase in that I'm a responsible 20 yr old, I have two jobs and pay for my own expenses and I've invested my money in places that make the most sense to me ... (saving up for my future so one day I can go to Disney again and Hotsprings with my family and also investing in savings accounts)

This video is incredibly helpful. We've done a pretty good job of teaching our oldest about the value of a dollar. I love the idea of letting them be completely in charge of their own school budget. That is another layer of teaching them how to manage their money. I've definitely been inspired to do this with my 13 year old. This was also a great reminder to start doing this with my 6 year old as well. Thank you for such a great video.
I was homeschooled my whole life and my family had very little money so i have a few ideas to add to these tips. :-)
If you can get plain notebooks, folders, pencil cases, etc for cheaper than the designed ones... Buy those and then get cheap stickers, cut out pictures from magazines/coloring books/whatever you have, and decorate them yourself. My mom did that a few years for me because it was cheaper AND more personalized so i loved it!
Same idea with backpacks except use cool, cheap pins/patches. I still have a purse decorated like that cause I like the look.
I'm sure i have more tips but i can't remember them now lol.
I love this - raising capable kids! My kids are on the autism spectrum and it's very challenging to teach them life skills (I experience a lot of discouragement) but I will keep trying. Your content gives me hope and inspiration Jordan :)

Hey can you make a video about how you filter what your kids watch? I’ve heard you say that your kids don’t watch commercials so they don’t know which new products are out. But can you go into more detail about which content/programs you allow? How do you filter things like movies? Do you pay for Netflix/Hulu/HBO Max? How do you know what your kids are watching and which techniques do you apple to make sure that content is safe and educational? How do you feel about programs like ABC Mouse and Noggin app? Please answerrrrrer

I’m nervous to suggest something considering you’re the queen of budgeting and smart shopping 😬 but one thing that has worked for me and my kids is investing in good socks! My kids all wear the same socks Nike dry fit socks in white, I have some sock for I promise you 2+ years! The best part is since they’re all the same color and mostly the same size it makes laundry a breeze!

I’m taking my 11yo school shopping tonight (I can only handle one of my kids at a time!), and this is SO HELPFUL! And reassuring-you obviously have lots of money, yet your kids are getting their clothes from Walmart. I actually got emotional watching you so carefully and patiently teach your kids these important life skills. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I try to do that too, but your method is more honed. Instead of just telling my son how much I’ll pay, I’m going to buy him a gift card before we start, or give him cash, and do this the way you just demonstrated. Thanks so very much for this video!
I just want to thank you for encouraging your children to to be independent and self-sufficient. My sweet husband’s mom literally did everything for her children, and they really struggled as adults. She thought she was being the best mom she could be by doing everything for them, but in the long run, it really hurt them. Before we got married, my husband had never made a bed, washed a dish, or washed a load of laundry. These are all skills he learned after we got married (at 19). Luckily, the Army also chipped in and taught him a thing or two 🤪. 10 years later, and we are teaching our children how to be (age appropriately) independent, self-sufficient, and responsible. I appreciate your tips so much, because they have bolstered what we already do as a family. It’s also great to have tips from someone who already has systems in place. We are forever grateful for PBC and BBC!!!

This maybe one of my favorite videos you have done Jordan. I would love more content like this. My oldest is 8.5yrs old and I have been teaching her some things about shopping but this motivates me to step it up with her. I would also love your feed back about those debit cards for the kids when you use them more.

I’m going to let the kids come with me and let them do this. I remember my parents giving me $100 each year for back to school shopping and boy did I make that money stretch (I shopped at the thrift store for clothes and saved a ton).

Jordan, I am so impressed by how you are teaching your kids to be self-sufficient and responsible for they’re own world. I grew up kind of sheltered and I wish I had learned what you are teaching your children at an earlier age. I am in my forties now and I wish I had less over protection and more freedom at an earlier age to learn some of the lessons that I’m learning now i.e. better budgeting. I love setting a limit and letting kids make their own decisions. I don’t have kids but am very close to my nieces and took over back to school when they were 10. I gave them a certain amount of money and they would bring some of their own birthday money /gift cards etc... and off we’d go. I loved watching them figure out priorities based on the money they had and not expecting moms (or my) credit card. And I was always so proud of them going up to the counter to pay and keep tally of balances themselves - we did this even when they started college! We all looked forward to it every year. They’re both out of college (debt free - read Debt Free U - seriously) working and making smart choices - I really hope I had a part in that!
I miss shopping for school supplies so much, it was one of the highlights of my year as a child and the special scent of freshly printed text books and notebooks was the best.

I LOVE the way you talk to your kids about budgeting! The way you describe divvying up your budget is exactly the same conversation I've been having with my fiance about planning our wedding! That one question "where do you want your money to go" is SO important!

shopping as a kid and I STILL love it as a teacher! I agree it is SO weird this year. It’s EASY to NOT teach kids about money and just do it for them, but parents and kids pay for that decision. We have a checklist system as well and I make our kids stick to a budget. It’s helpful that they know the value of a dollar before they leave home!

Honest this is amazing! I just started teaching my son (5) to rinse his dishes and put it in the dish washer and my cousin who I watch (8) to do the same and help pick up the mess around the house. They normally clean up the toys but I really started giving them some harder chores and this is a new thing I can do with them!
My oldest is 5 and he loves to scan items and help pay for them too. I loved how you have structured the shopping experience for your 4 oldest. The lists and cards are a great idea!! X

Love this! We have a pretty tight budget, for four kids independently homeschooling we had a $150 budget for school supplies for the year including supplies for like science projects and some teacher necessities... Clothes budget is basically we scrape by the best we can and figure out how to get what we need as we need it...

As my girls got older they wanted more expensive clothing items. I refuse to pay 200 dollars for a pair of jeans. They each got 200 dollars at the beginning of the school year for clothing and they had to make that last for the year. One daughter would spend hers on one shirt and a pair of jeans. The other one I would still have money left over by the end of the school year because she would only shop clothing sales and had a new wardrobe every season. I also capped them if they needed shoes for example I would give a reasonable amount and if they wanted anything above that they had to pay the difference. The one daughter who loved to buy expensive everything, now only shops at walmart, because she no longer lives at home and actually said to me why would I pay 40 dollars for a shirt with a name brand on it when I can go to walmart and get one for 10.
I am so like your daughter that shops all the sales! I hate paying full price for clothes especially 🙂
I shop sales and still get good name brand stuff for less. I also shop at Platos closet and other stores like that and apps like Mercari and Poshmark and don’t have to wear cheap clothes
Yes yes yes! Love this! I personally love to buy the cheapest possible clothes that don't look cheap 😆 but if either of my kids get a taste for designer, this is exactly what I'll do 👌❤️

I did back to school shopping with my 10 yr old boy yesterday. Wish i had half your patience and organization skills! We did ok though. He was also shocked by the cost of socks and underwear! Here's to raising capable kids!

Would love to see a capsule wardrobe for the kids I know you have shown how you mark shoes to hand me down - but how many shoes do you allow for each child, pants, tshirts etc. Also how often do you go through everything.
I spent about $100 per kid for supplies and uniforms. Where I saved, was shopping sales ( oldnavy/target/staples) and buying next size up when replacing clothing throughout the year. We also were able to re use several folders and extras we bought last year, this year.

Totally love the budgeting tips you are teaching your kiddos at a young age. I will use them when my son is school age.
When I shop for shoes for my kids, I always make sure I can easily fit my index finger between the shoe and the back of their foot. That gives enough room to fit a thicker sock or growing room for a full season.

We took a different approach with our kids. Took them each year to the University Book Store to purchases their supplies. Did this a few weeks before classes commenced so it wasn’t overly busy but well stocked. Quality items, excellent prices, added some varsity clothes as well. Calm shopping and the kids felt like adults! Walked around campus talking about our experiences at our Alma Mater and had lunch at the Faculty Club. Kids looked forward to it every year. We like to think that giving them the exposure to higher education helped guide their goals. They all did their undergrads at that same school and then pursued graduate degrees at amazing schools.
