    There's three types of clear coat in rattle cans, 1, 2 and 3. 1 being the clear, activator and hardener are all in one. 2 being there is a little button on the bottom of the can you have to press which releases the activator and you should use it fairly quickly and 3 is the three part clear, activator and hardener . There all pretty much the same and the 1 part is just fine for most diy projects. 3 part clears are for advanced projects like painting entire vehicles.

    • @mikemarcell8330

      What's the difference between hardener and activator? If it's all inside the can in your #1 example, what keeps it from hardening inside the can?

    Liked the video. I’ve just done a jukebox in flat black spray. Multiple coats. I didn’t realize that smooth plywood is hard to cover. Grainy patches all over, which I knocked down with a sanding pad before a few more coats of flat. Looks pretty solid now. My plan is to add flake and speckles to it, and I didn’t know whether I should put some gloss black on it first. Final coats are going to be Rustoleum crystal clear. I know it’s not going to look like a deeply polished piano when I’m done, but it still should be shiny enough if I forgo the gloss black.

      Rust-Oleum makes a really pretty silver glitter paint. I've been wanting to paint something with that and a solid clear coat over. Either do a black with just enough blue over it to be dark dark blue then mist it with the silver glitter or base layer of chrome then silver glitter.

    Thanks for being willing to paint with Rustoleum clear coat, as the fancier 2K clear intimidates me at the moment! (My painting technique is still coming out like turd so I'm trying to keep practicing with low-cost materials...realizing that better quality materials may give a better effect, but I'm not bold enough yet! Thank you again for the inspiration and confidence-building! :)

    • @jamesward5721

      If anything, 2K clear is easier to use than any 1k clear. Shoot 2 coats, keep the first one light, then shoot a heavier coat - nothing to be intimidated by. It's just paint. :-) All that matters is the overlap - keep them tight, the job'll be a goodun.

      Actualy, search "isocyanates", a lot of 2K have them and are poisonous, even professional filters are not that good against them, it is the same with aircraft paints, we transitioned to enamel paints that are not as good as polyurethane ones but at least are not so poisonous.

    An old school method of demonstrating clarity (leveling) of topcoat, is to hold a digital watch or dollar bill against cured finish. The reflection of the image/numbers indicates the ‘clarity’ of the topcoat. Hard to hold the dollar at right angle to capture on video, but, trial & error (like everything else).

    • @natalies.8800
      @natalies.8800 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ooh, yes, would love to see a video on fixing peeling clear coat. Mine's flaking off the hood and flying up like little tiny clear sails whenever I'm driving down the highway. When I've tried sanding the oxidized stuff, the sander either only takes off part of the oxidized layer (which I don't want to paint over because it shows an edge) or takes off all paint down to the metal. Which is not the end of the world, but I'm wondering if there's a much better way to approach this with inexpensive materials and inexpensive tools while practicing the technique. Thanks Emil, for the suggestion too!

    I've found that the duplicolor clear effects have consistency issues, also the duplicolor wheel paint. The first can of clear effects I had was great, the black base coat was a deep black, then in the light an amazing rainbow pearlescent-esque. The second can of clear effects has so much silver flake in it, the black base looked almost silver. The second can of black base was not the same, it was closer to gunmetal gray. I had already wasted the last of my good can of clear effects on the two "gunmetal" rims. I took it back to where I bought the paint and they gave me refund on the bad can of black and gave what I needed to fix my rims for free(a new can of black base, clear effects and clear coat) so I basically painted my rims for free.

    Actually when I rebuilt my 19 72 Dodge charger I had to use all black panels like what you got but they were new so it's like a primer / codeine put on it it slick smooth like matte black paint so I literally took some 2K clear which is the stuff that has a little button on it and you press it and you shake it it came out like glass smooth and shiny and beautiful without even have the wet sand and buff the clear coat no orange peel nothing in it look like a professional paint job from a body shop then when I wet sanded it and polished it up to 10,000 grit sandpaper it literally looked like a mirror when done and everybody loves it and then when I tell him it's just the black primer coating stuff that they put on the panels when you buy new panels that's all that is their mouths at the floor I even got a buddy who is a body shop painter and he can buy the same type of primer coating they use on the new panels by the gallons and he's sprayed his whole car in that color because that primer is a beautiful satin black actually so you want to sat n black car and it looked beautiful on his 1972 amx javelin the only reason you use it is because he could buy by the gallon for 10 bucks compared to 100 to $200 a gallon for good set and black the name brand stuff that they use regularly on cars

    I painted the top cover of a cd player. I used satin black but now I’m not sure if I should use a matte or just clear top coat or just leave as is. The satin black alone already looks shiny which I’m not a fan of tbh but no way I wanna go through the whole process again of sanding, priming and repainting with a matte black

    I have to paint my tailgate to match my truck. I like the dupli-color without rainbow effects or what I call it. Glitter.

    That looks amazing! Would regular waxing over rustoleum clear give a similar durability to 2k spray max?

    I got a question um I'm painting my vow cover but my vow covers made out of plastic so I was wondering the 2X will be all right says I put that other paint it start with V it's supposed to be for heat treat it in its flaking off so I wondering if 2X is not going to flake off and it's not gonna be too hot for it

      I have regular Rustoleum 2x on my valve cover and it's doing fine. It's an aluminum cover, so I think it gets hotter than plastic.

    Does this glitter lay flat under clear? My few attempts I’ve done with a glitter came out textured, wet sanding helped a little but took some of the color off the glitter.

      @JamesDguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amanda Webb that’s why I did the gloss clear on top of the glitter so that it would be wet sanded without taking the rainbow effect away

      You need to bury the flakes with clear same as doing it with a spray gun I'm a painter my trade I did a bike not long ago silver with blue flakes And cleared over sanded that then cleared again n buffed it out only say to get a mirror finish with flake but not nessasrly needed

    • @GJ67
      @GJ67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flakes are just tinted metallic particles. Because they’re actually pretty large flakes, you’ve got to bury them under the clear for them to be effective. Use 2K clear coat. It’s denser and flows out better. Put the flake on medium wet, which means don’t drown it but make it even in consistency. It’ll lay down better when you do clear it out. If you want a dead flat custom appearance, then put the clear on 2 full coats. Let it dry for 2 days, wet sand it down with P1500 grit sandpaper ( and don’t sand through it ) , then apply another coat to 2. It’s called flow coating. It’s better done though in an Auto smash shop with a spraybooth .
