    To use Boolean in 3dsmax 2017 you have to use ProBoolean (at least in my case).
    1.Select the sphere
    2.Go to Compound Objects in the Create Tab
    3.Select "ProBoolean"
    4.Go into the parameters tab on the right of your screen
    5.Select "subtraction"
    6.Go to the "Pick Boolean" tab on the right of your screen
    7.Select "Start Picking"
    8.Go into your viewport and click the cylinder
    9.Your donezos
    10.Like this comment, it took me forever to figure out.

    • @SquareSelect1
      @SquareSelect1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      - followed those instructions and still not able to draw a cylinder. How to fix this?? I follow your steps but after i click start picking, it does not draw anything. does not let me do anything.

    Thank YOu Zach Hixon. Your explanation is excellent. When ever you pick up a new tool you are explaining first what you need, to do that what tool to pickup along with tool explanation. This is great.

    Lovely tutorial which is well explained. One minor thing to anyone watching in the future is that during material assignment the halves arent recognised as separate entities, even with the poly select on.
    I solved this by creating a sub object

      The license I got in this video was given to me by an old high-school teacher kind of under the table. When I upgraded my CPU a few months after making this it broke all of my licenses, and because I wasn't the original owner of the license, I don't have any of the credentials to re-activate it.
      Autodesk actually contacted me a few months back about trying to get me a license to do more videos, but about halfway through the process I just started getting dead air :(

      Check out his older 2012 version of this tutorial, He showed you how to allign the floor better than just setting it to z -10 which worked well this time but knowing the other method is going to be alot more useful when doing more difficult models. :)

    Just wanted to say thank you very much for this video. This is the first tutorial I have watched that I have been able to follow and do from start to finish. The only thing I wish you, or anyone for that matter, would be to include how to pan and move the view around the way you do. I am still accomplishing view changes by moving the mouse the opposite way from what I want to move, and scrolling in and out. Call me dumb, but this it's the only way I have been able to accomplish being able to pan or readjust the view in the active window. I have subscribed, and hope you do more tutorials like this one!

      +PiMpDaDdYMoOsE This was meant to be more of a modelling tutorial, so I didn't cover navigation. I did however make previous tutorial covering some of the more fundamental concepts of 3ds max:

    Can u make a tutorial how to model a action cam..
    I mean, that would help us to see how to make a cylinder over a box, how to make a dome for the lens, how to give glass finish to lens , and also the texture to various parts

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials

      +Saurabh Raut I love that idea! I don't have access to Max anymore (at least to a capacity to make tutorials), but I am working with Autodesk to get better access to it. An action cam will probably be one of the first videos I make when I do :)

    Hi, my light sources will show up in the rendered image, but before that, when I am working on the pokéball, the light source does not emmit light. Is there a setting I have missed?

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lisa “Sputnik” Gren Go to the upper left side of the viewport where is looks something like "[ + ] [Perspective] [Realistic]" and make sure that the right option is set to "Realistic" and under the "lighting and shadows" options, make sure it is set to "use scene lights" and "shadows."
      I might be a little off on this, as I'm on vacation and can't look at the screen, but my description should be close enough to work :/

    Great tutorial, Fur the guys trying this out as beginners,
    In 3Ds Max 2018 or (in any max) at 4:49 (boolean), at the Operand operators, ensure you select 'Subtract.'
    Also if you have issues with light, played around with intesnsity while setting it to light from scene lights.
    :D Worked like a charm.

      Make sure it's set to the correct operation type. It should say something like "A-B" or something.
      Also make sure there isn't an checkbox like "Remove object" selected. I don't remember if there is or not, and I can't check as I don't have Max anymore, but it's worth a shot.

    I'd like to add that if you are using the 2017 version of 3DS Max you're going to have a rough time with this tutorial, the whole boolean and subtraction bit is entirely different on 2017.

      Can't. Don't have a license anymore, and after being contacted by Autodesk about them wanting to give me a license practically for free in order to teach, they cut communications out of the blue and now I can't get in touch with them.
      Max is expensive and not worth it anyways. If you are learning, use Blender or (if you have a budget) C4D. If you learn the techniques in 1 software, you can easily transition to any down the line.
      I use Blender professionally and have for years, and can say that there is not a single thing I would prefer Max for, especially with Blender 2.8 right around the corner. Only reason I would say to learn Max at this point would be if a specific studio you were applying for a job at required it. In such a case, someone already familiar with 3D software would only maybe need a month to fully transition.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lex make sure you have "Nvidia Mental Ray" Set as your render. I Think it might also be missing in the student or trial version, but I have heard contradicting info on that. Are any of the mental ray materials showing?

    • @LiterallyScarecrow

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lex Like I said, could be a problem with either using a student version or trial version.
      If you have purchased the full version, try going to the "Download other Autodesk software product(s)" section at the bottom of your account's "Products & Services" page. Some people have reported finding a download there

    Great video! However I have I problem haha, I when I try to add colour nothing happens and I cannot understand what's going on.

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dayo Plays At what part is the color not appearing? Is it when you change the diffuse color of the material, or when you apply the color the model?

    • @SwiftD
      @SwiftD 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's when I apply the colour to the model. I thought it was just a bug but I tried changing thr colour of something another scene and it worked just fine

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dayo Plays Try both methods of applying the material to the object, and if that doesn't work then it might very well be a bug in that scene file.

    • @SwiftD

      I don't currently have access to Max, but I believe it should be called something like "Standard." It doesn't really matter, you can use any materials and they will work the same way.

    Is there any alternative rendering option? The new version has Arnold for the replacement but it’s downright too expensive to afford.

      Here's a quick list of renderers if you are willing to pay for most of them. Quality / Price wise I would go with either VRay or Octane: all3dp.com/1/best-3d-rendering-software/
      If you are looking for free, there is Luxrender, which I think still supports 3ds max, but that's the only free one on this list I've actually used.
      My personal recommendation if you really want free + quality is to export from Max to Blender and use Cycles. It's entirely free, and really is one of the better renderers that exist atm. Any new renderer would require you to learn a new material system, so it's not like you have to learn a whole lot extra.

    Hi, thank you for this helpful tutorial. I'm currently using 3ds Max 2018. Unfortunately, I can't find the option "Pick Operand B." What am I missing?
    Thank you in advance.

      Make sure it's set to "Subtract" and then click "add operand" and select the other object

    Very helpful video, but, when i export the model to VRML97, the sphere and material texture are all missing. How do i fix this?

      +Alex Lee I am not that familiar with VRML, but I found this on the web.
      "Several things you can try:
      -convert primitives like Box to Meshes
      -use only jpeg images
      -add an UVUnwrap to all meshes
      -make sure UV coordinates are in channel 1
      -use only Standard materials."

      Does it work with stills? If not then make sure you have the correct lights for your renderer

    The best way to look at 3d modeling and Max is like digital Origami.

    Thanks for the tutorial dude!! This was really helpful to understand 3ds max! I am a blender user myself :P I use it almost everyday aha. Btw what pc are you using? yours renders so fast my took 2 minutes just to render the ball XD yours took about 5 seconds XD

      +connor kid not going to lie, I think I sped up the video like 400x or more XD
      Back when this video was made I was using an AMD Fx 6350 to render, so no way it would have been that fast
      I upgraded that summer to the rig I have now which is an I7 6700k and carried over my GTX 970 from the old rig.

    Hey. First off I love your videos, keep them coming. I am currently part of a small team reconstructing an old abbey that was destroyed back in the 1400's. We have made plenty of assests and need to place these in a world with terrain, trees, water... What programme should I get to model the surrounding terrain, and then place our max models into? Once again thanks for making these tutorials!

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +RTK Kav You could certainly use a program such as 3ds max, Blender or C4D for such a project. The freeform mesh tools in max, and the sculpt tools in blender would allow you to easily sculpt and shape your terrain, and Max's population tools / blender's population addons will allow you to populate with trees and other various objects. Water is pretty simple and just relies on some texture mapping and shaders.

    Hey Zach one more question so I have followed your guides exactly and created a light, but no matter how I changed the intensity there's still no light coming out of the bulb, why is that?

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it show up when you render it?

    • @Alex-zc9ty
      @Alex-zc9ty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No...maybe because I'm using 3dsmax 2018 and I don't have Nvidia rendering..? i don't have the mental ray rendering like you do. But that still can't explain the absence of light..

    • @ZachHixsonTutorials
      @ZachHixsonTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 2018 was the first version not to include mental ray. Max switched to Arnold, which IMHO is a lot better. Using it is a little different than what is shown in this video, but it should be pretty easy to figure out (plus, it's good practice for taking what you know, and adapting to a new system which is crucial when learning new software).

      IDK, 3ds Max just does that by default. At least it used to, haven't used it since the 2018 release

  • @hotwheelsdeepstate
    @hotwheelsdeepstate 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nvidia Mental Ray was discontinued by nvidia back in 2017 and will probably not be included in whatever version of 3ds Max you are using, so for those wondering like I did why they can't find the arch & design in the material browser that's why.
