ivo has the most beautiful and perfect equilibrium of the 3 elements of music ...melody, harmony and form.
ivo has the highest internal discipline possible, which is the ability to identify, discern, and take action on the particular thoughts in his head that are actually aligned with his life vision and goals.
has infinite hard work and sacrifice, pogorelich once said he worked like a galley slave, i believe him, the result is this, the most perfect and beautiful piano playing ever.

I love...love...love the freedom and the intelligent and musically-poetic interepretations that Pogorelich infuses the "moment musicals' with. Remember, walking is for beginners who NEED to learn & understand basic rhythm. The HEART is what is needed to deeply understand the expression of the soul. Pogorelich hears what is in the depth of the soul, not what is on the surface.

    Alexandr Pushkin
    (1799-1837)
On the hills of Georgia lies
    the darkness of the night...
On the hills of Georgia lies the darkness of the night,
    Aragva murmurs underneath.
I'm sad, yet light, my sorrow's bright,
    My sorrow's filled with you.
With you, you only ... My melancholy,
    Nothing can torment or disturb,
My heart, it burns and loves anew - because
    It cannot live without loving.
Translated by Nick and Dimitri Derkatch
    На холмах Грузии лежит ночная мгла;
    Шумит Арагва предо мною.
    Мне грустно и легко; печаль моя светла;
    Печаль моя полна тобою,
    Тобой, одной тобой... Унынья моего
    Ничто не мучит, не тревожит,

Deeply thoughtful and utterly authentic. Rachmaninoff was in a very low frame of mind at the time and this sounds like he was trying to work his through it. Pogorelich understands this.

      2) Volontà: Horowitz diceva al giovane Barenboim: You have to 'Will' ...

You might not care for Ivo's interpretations.. But for me he is what I consider a true Artist. I look at a composition as a framework set out by the composer.. There are many who stay within this framework and play it beautifully.. These I call Technicians.. But those that master the framework, but play the way they Feel the music are what I consider True Artists.. And if they can convey that feeling to others than that is Genius..
For me Pogorelich is that kind of Genius.. IMHO of course...

There are some special, shockingly beautiful moments in these moments. Unconventional and certainly not how the composer himself ever played or would have played them, they are an interesting interpretation from what many people (including Martha Argerich) consider to be a real genius.

+Mark Bordelon I like and agree with what you wrote about there being some "shockingly beautiful moments" here. I find that to be true in Pogorelich's playing in general. He may be maddening sometimes in terms of conventional expectations, but then he'll play something that just raises goosebumps! I find that my ears tend to perk up when I hear Pogorelich. He is himself as a musician and thank the kind powers that be for that!

extremely incredible performance, I love eccentrical pianists such as Gould, Horowitz and Pogorelic, some of their recordings are perfect versions of pieces how I view them, in this set of moments musicaux I love the sound and the unorthodox tempos of Pogorelic, and apart from no.1 I liked all of them, if only the no.1 would be at least a bit faster with the same phrases and sound quality, it would be perfect... the piano sings like a human voice, it is amazing, Pogorelic is unique, especially I enjoyed those MM that are supposed to be slow, no.3 and no.5 are pure sweetness

2000-2010: The best Pogorelich ever. Black mirror of the soul. Heterology of divine madness. Idiosyncratic playing of unspeakable logos. Augenblick upon Augenblick. A holy moment, an epiphany. There is only kairos. Transcendence breaks out in space, the event of the possibility of the impossible. Fire from heaven, unsettling Heimatlosigkeit, wild world of otherness. A musical evocation of future worlds. Poetic drawing of being. A dance of death on the edges of reality. Oneiric immersion in the texture of impossible sounds. Beyond the unspeakable. Apophatic silence of reason in the shining darkness of celestial harmonies. Art as becoming other. Art as transformation into a new substance. New space. New time. New creation. White ecstasy.

"Chopin´s playing evoked all the sweet and sorrowful voices of the past. Chopin sang the tears of music...in a whole gamut of different forms and voices, from that of the warrior to those of children and angels..."
Bohdan Zaleski, polish poet, personal diary 2 feb 1844.
"Under the fingers of Chopins´s hand the piano became the voice of an archangel, an orchestra, an army, a raging ocean, a creation of the universe, the end of the world."
    Solange Clesinger.
Ivo is the archetype of the modern artist, the isolated and courageous master, who finds his own way to new heights of expression, no matter the prejudices or the barriers of misunderstanding raised against him. He stands alone at the beginning of a new epoch like a prophet, mapping the routes that art would take.
Pogorelich´s cathartic and mystical sound, is concerned with the ultimate mysteries that transcend this world. His grandiose, colossal and majestic art, symbolizes the struggle of the human soul to find release from the bonds of its material body. His exquisite and overwhelming music continues to echo throughout the entire performance and beyond, so the action is at once momentary, eternal and complete.
Pogorelich´s interpretations are indescribably beautiful and irresistible. His sound is pure poetry and extremely emotional, yet entirely unsentimental. We are hypnotized by his new and radical naturalness, by his nobility, dignity, severity and sobriety; transporting us to states of wonder, ecstasy, meditation, redemption, love and compassion.
Sound and Silence, Life and Death, Time and Space; collapse into the Eternal moment of Infinity.

Typical Ivo! Out of mainstream and breaking the rules... Very interesting version, but in my opinion quite unorthodox! Deep Pogorelichious sound, sometimes extremely slow parts, very good dynamics. Extremely slow no 1 and no 5... It' s nonsense to say that Rachmaninov "should have been upset with this" or "Rachmaninoff must be turning in his grave"!!! This is music, this is art... This is something else, something different, certainly...extreme, but not bizarre! It' s Pogorelich! I prefer Ashkenazy or Berman...I love listen to Ashkenazy, he is my favourite pianist and i thing he is the greatest for Rachmaninov' s works.

What he does with No. 6 is really interesting- the complete bipolar opposite of Gavrilov's interpretation, which in itself is also really unique- in the sense that Pogorelich's is very 'zoomed out' looking at the melody as a whole progression from start to finish, whereas I think Gavrilov is more 'zoomed in' / of the moment if you like, playing up the repetitiveness of the structure and letting the chord changes come as they will- Gavrilov lets the mechanical dominate, Pogorelich doesn't... Give Gavrilov's version a listen and see which you like best!

Gavrilov is wonderful too, albeit completely different; his Rach CD has always been one of my all time favourites.

When some people lisen to one of Ivo's performances they don't realize that they are about to enter another world, and then when they don't undersand what's going on they blame the artist.

Very interesting interpretation! I feel capable of appreciating this more because I am familiar with the work...but I’m not sure this particular interpretation would win over someone hearing it for the first time. My personal favorite for this work is Idil Biret.
