I did this once up near a peak in Snowdonia, accidentally I might add.
Didn't go so well either, but certainly wasn't 20mins from the car. Had to trek down the mountain in pitch black with crazy wind and constant downpour on no sleep. Got to the car the next morning. I strongly advise against it ahah

Definitely the right call getting off that hill. Glorious sunset, absolutely stunning. The Lanshan tents are cracking tents, mine has been through a few storms in Scotland and Wales and not a dint, but the storms didn't have that lightning, that was terrible. Glad the pair of you are okay. Nice one!

we too were camping on Kinder on Tuesday night, Northern Edge near Red Brook. We were perhaps a mite more exhausted being older and having walked from Langsett on a hot day. We didn't bail, safer staying close to the ground on an air bed than to walk off upright and presenting a more attractive target for the lightning.....a great lightshow and I slept so well after the storm!!!!

Hi Paul, if that's the storm on Tuesday i was motorbike camping near Butterton, i just put a zip in my canvas polish lavvu and set off on Monday for a couple of days chilling in the dales, four solid hours of rain and wind and the tent didn't let any water in which was a surprise because i had not treated it with any water proofing solution. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos they inspire retired old fogeys like me to get out and about as much as we can, all the best. Bob.

Paul thanks for sharing your adventures! As a Hammock camper the need for two trees naturally leads you to a valley and out of harms way each night... The Army who have to be out in all weathers are Masters at taking advantage of 'micro terrain' features - that will be dips and gullies and using a tarp - camping exposed might provide great morning views but is it sensible? Personally I love 'The Natural Navigator' by Tristan Gooley - as I grow to appreciate what the signs of nature can tell us about correct navigation, I'm also becoming more aware that nature can also signal safety or danger - a mountain or hill top bereft of feeding animals perhaps indicates something important about events about to unfold - in short - where are the sheep? is a pertinent question. Finally, as an avid cloud watcher, and linking this to meteorology - simple weather forecasts are possible on the fly and depending on the wind speed (faster air flows makes quicker weather changes and shorter forecast predictions) are good for 1 to 4 hr look ahead. All this adds up to having a more sensitive awareness of our surroundings, learning to read the signs and using this local information to our local advantage...

That was definitely a good call mate. I was up Mam Tor about a month ago when two of our party suddenly had their hair stand on end. They didn't have any sense of the potential danger. So I got them straight down off the great ridge and to lower ground. A couple of mins after we did a lightning bolt landed somewhere around the top of Mam Tor. We were less than a mile away. It rained but we didn't get the wind like that mate. Great educational video though Paul. Nothing wrong with bugging out when you need to and I think it's a valuable video for all these newbie wild campers that are emerging from nowhere due to the staycation fad. Glad you were safe. 👍

I had one of those nights just last night Paul. Was at 475 metres near Skiddaw house back of Skiddaw. Frightening and very exposed. The electrical storm was fierce from dusk to dawn then abaited. That whole area is very bald without protection, big featureless slopes of either bracken or heather. I jettisoned at 4am when the storm was a bit less and the rain lighter. Very glad to get down safely. Lessons on my part to be learned. Glad you got down safe.

Hi Gary. The tent didn't actually fail. We chose to leave purely because of the lightning. It was striking from all directions. The tent was holding up well in the wind considering it's not really an all-weather tent. I'm confident everything would have been fine if it was just wind and rain. I'm not prepared to take on a lightning bolt though. Thanks for watching

BLUE LINES! I'm glad you asked that. In my Lanshan 2, I've unhooked the front of the outer, rolled it back just past the ridgeline, and secured the outer with the door toggles. Then connected the blue lines to the hooks at the trekking pole pocket, then diagonally down to the mesh guyout, then diagonally back to the bathtub hooks then to the guys, to keep the inner roomy. Pow, star-gazing mode.

Total respect for abandoning ship Paul - the person who was there is best placed to make the decision. I frequently try to imagine what it must be like to pack up in the dark in a storm, and I don't relish the prospect one bit. I avoid summit camping unless I'm confident about the conditions.
Coincidentally, I recently bought a Lanshan 1, more from curiosity than anything else, but I sold it on without using it - setting it up in the garden it just didn't feel as solid or as spacious as my regular tent (Hexpeak V4A).

That is a very compact emergency tent. I reviewed a Karrimor Bivvy2 in a storm last year. It seems not much small packed than yours but is pretty much a bag with windows. I didn't use my hiking pole to make it more comfortable but I'll give that a go having seen yours. I wondered if one short man could lie out in mine if it was guyed out a bit. Lightning and exposed hills, yes not safe! A good call to shift, pronto! Thanks for sharing the experience.

So, would that tent have withstood that bad weather up there and keep you dry and safe if lightning wasn't in the equation and the door was down wind? I don't get not staking the edges down to the ground so wind couldn't blow in bringing wet! It could be just as bad on barren flat land with the same conditions. Except the rain doesn't run down hill and hopefully away! Nothing replaces experience.

Just in from work so caught this. Right choice, do the thing that makes you feel safe. Mountain will be there tomorrow. As a mountain leader - Being in the open, up high or in a tent is not advisable in a close thunderstorm. Seek indoors shelter if you can e.g. a bothy. If no choice stay low down in a ditch or behind rock piles. If you know the route down and its safe to do so and you have good light at night walk out. Be especially careful if the wind and rain are very heavy. If not try and shelter as best as possible until the storm abates. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot and putting themselves and others at risk. Watch lightning from indoors.....

For reasonable weather camping, yes, a taller bell, dome, teepee, ridge, or similar are find, but when wind is expected, I prefer a hooped bivvy bag, with the low end pointing into the wind; they present a lower profile, which reduces the amount of wind loading on the tent. I've used a tarp shelter in heavy rain, too; they're no good in the wind when you don't have trees handy, though, which brings me back to the bivvy bag. Yes, for people who don't like confined spaces, they can be a problem, and you can only get into them from pretty-much the prone position, but for all that, they're remarkably good bits of kit. They're also excellent if you need to hunker down in place, esp in unfamiliar ground, such as on a mountain, in a stormy and loud light show. Glad you got out of there in one piece, btw :)

Don't mean to be overly critical, but if you knew there was the potential for rain the safe bet would have been to make camp where you could have weathered it out. Setting up on top of a hill, or ridge is never a good idea. If you had chosen a protected campsite, you would not have been in danger, nor have to put yourself in further danger of packing up, and walking out in the dark and rain. This is exactly how people get injured, or worse.

Pitching your tent on the summit seems daft.I don't really get this 'wild camping' thing. We started camping in our teens back in the 1980's. Plan a weekend, bung everything in the boot of the mg midget, triumph spitfire, TR7 etc and go (any time of the year). We learnt how to camp with the scouts, air cadets and from books. Cheap tents pitched in shelter of the wind, door downwind, two lengths of paracord flung over and staked down and you would survive a force 10 gale. Sewn in groundsheet in the inner tent kept you dry and a '58 pattern military surplus sleeping bag and a karrimat (two in the winter) kept you warm and comfortable. Anyone agree?

    • @cybervand
      @cybervand 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Because wild camping is just that, wild and fun, who cares if you get a little wet or your buddy oversealed his tent and its now raining inside due to condensation, or that you had to share food cause some dummy took too little with him (yes this all happened in the space of one trip) its all about the journey.
